To pass emissions I needed to replace my cat but since I had the old one out I hollowed it out completely just incase i wanna put it back on. How much of a performance gain would I get with a hollow cat? Any different sound in the exhaust? Remember this is a 240 GL so any power would help greatly

You will gain -1hp to 1hp, give or take 5hp. A gutted cat won't make the exhaust a whole lot louder. It might be enough to notice, but not unless you only have one straight through muffler. I have driven my car with an open header, then with only a Bosal cat, and it was hardly different at all. Mostly the idle was less harsh, but while accelerating, it was still screaming loud.

will make it sound like a boat motor right mike? lol

yeah made a big difference from a clogged cat to no cat on my car... but i have yet to figure out if a fresh good cat and no cat have any difference. on a turbo car ofcourse.

on an N/A car, you're just gonna get one hellova loud exhaust.

I wish people would stop gutting cats all the time, it's my biggest personal anoyance.

Many tests have shown that gutting a cat will more often than not make you loose power, and just make a lot more noise.
Good high flow cats are easy to find, and not that expensive, and power loss is just barely an issue with a street spec car, with the idea being that you just make sure the rest of the system is free flowing enough.

I'm with you Bishop. This is really a misguided mod, the enviornmental impact that you make without a converter is so great that it makes no sence. for the little performance gain 1%?? you are producing tons of poulentants.
:nomex:
does no cat perform better than a cloged cat... yea sure. is it better than a functional hi flow cat no way!.

Thanx guys for the input. Now I won't waste my time or even bother with my old cat.

So what to do about the messy 4-2-1 header and the 1.75 inch pipe between that and the cat?

With those still there, will adding a new exhaust (2.5" with single magnaflow muffler is planned) free it up that much?

hard sayin not knowin
