I was looking thorugh old emails and found an email that i'd sent with the results of my run at a VW GTI Festival.

I was the only other make of car apart from a VW on the strip and according to a mate in the stands people were saying "OMG a Volvo   this will be funny watch that G40 Piss all over it.

My car at the time was completey stock, absoultley no mods whatsoever and it really pissed my other mate off who's heavily modified G40 i ran against.

VW POLO G40/ VOLVO 740
Super Charged/ Turbocharged
140bhp / 180hp
850 kg's / 1500 kg's

1.197 Reaction 1.094
3.026 60ft 2.561
8.361 330ft 7.067
12.132 1/8mile Time 10.765
64.87 1/8 MPH 67.06
18.026 1/4mile Time 16.666
84.55 1/4 MPH 83.92

At Santapod's Dragstrip.

The best time i can ever remeber posting was a 15.6 on my first ever time on a dragstrip the year before.

That was with my exhaust manifold gaskets blowing and the car having bout 20,000 miles less that it did then.

Could that be a cheap performance mod???

Are the polos big over there for racing? all the ricers here just have golfs to f*ck around with and dont know much about corrado's (lighter than the golf.)

The golf is still the most popular VW for modding over here.

But to give the VW guys credit most of them just like the clean smooth look. There not that crazy for huge wings, there more into making them faster and handling better just like us volvo drivers.

Ok there's a small percentage of them that go rice tastic but its rare and a lot of VW owners.

The Polo's are not so common for modding. The Polo G40's were a rare production run of only 500 cars. They came with a 1.3 Supercharged lump that was good for about 110 HP. It was easily rated.

I serioulsy considered buying the G40 from my mate but the insurance company wanted four times what i pay for the volvo so i had to decline

My mate has now progressed to the G60 Corrado which is a lovely car. I would say that it is the same weight as a Golf though.

I'm in the middle of a conversion for a friend. I'm putting a Corrado G60 engine into a stripped out MK1 Golf. We should be looking at 225Hp in something weighing around 650 kgs

You may be correct on the weight, but for the US specs ive looked on several websites. The rice gets out of hand here on vws, not too many perfomance for the newer ones. Ive been to a few drags at Sacramento Race Way and the Air Cools still dominate the Water Cooled Vdubs.
