View Full Version : Pimptastic Burnouts Brick style!

In my lengthy driving career and more wreckless younger days we placed more emphasis on cool burnouts and such than hauling ass around corners, and since it has been requested that burnouts be discussed, here's what I have found works really well (if you hate your tires)

Some trueisms:
Sticky tires tend to smoke more
its always easier to do it when its wet
If you're driving an NA car thats an auto you're probably only going to be able to do this with water assistance(theres no shame in this! na's can still roast em to the ground!)

Methods::Automagic:
On a turbo car, it doesnt get much simpler than this, one foot goes on the brakes, one on the gas, ease onto the gas pedal, watch the boost gauge, when it goes yellow (let it creep on over into the yellow about as far as you think it'll go) *slowly* start backing off the brake pedal. Since most of the braking force is applied to the front brakes, the rear brakes will ease up first, and with all that torque on hand they generally start squalling quick, let up until the car acts like its about to roll forward, we dont want to kill the rear pads and rotors :). Enjoy the smoke :)

On an NA auto car the same rules apply, however generally its difficult if you have anything but 125 series tires on the back :wink:, heres where a little bit of water on the passenger rear tire goes a long way. Same rules as above, except stall it up untill it stops reving and back off the brakes sloooowly.

Methods::Manual:
Theres a bit of an art to a good burnout in a manual car, One could side step the clutch at 6k and ride out the smoke for the couple of seconds before traction catches up (the car will move forward) I prefer to step it off the limiter, jab the brakes as soon as the clutch is out, let it roast for a couple seconds in first and real quick like make for the 2nd gear shift and get things *really* burning (smoked out a frat party one night using this method). This was whilst NA, pretty much goes the same for turbo cars, your clutch, transmission, and diff will hate you for it.

Methods::FWD autos:
Here you're gonna have problems if you're NA, stall it up, set the ebrake and apply water. Turbo fwd's stall it up, set the ebrake and ease off the brakes for smokey goodness.

Methods::FWD:Manuals:
My favorite method of destruction was to chuck it in reverse, pop the clutch (get it going about 10mph backwards) tach it up and dump it out in first, and snatch the ebrake up (And watch your transaxle fall out the bottom).

Methods::Useful Obstructions:
These are also known as third party linelocks, and include things like: Walls, trees, light poles, barriers, etc.
Roll up and gently bump it, if you're an auto just stand on it, if its a manual hold it against the barrier (we're not trying to adjust the angle of the bumper here)and step it off the clutch.

Other smokey goodness:
I have noticed that na or turbo, one can get the open diff to do some decent donuts if one can get the tire spinning fast enough (i.e. start off in 1st, and mid drift/donut/slide/whatever slam second). However it should be noted that this is definitly NOT healthy for the rear end (or the transmission) and probably what has contributed the most to past breakages for me.

Enjoy 8-)

sounds like everyday driving to me.... but good article not the less

i actually got my open diff to accelerate sideways once..

I remember fondly those times when we had a blizzard across midwest... I was the only car to leave the traffic light w/o spinning the wheels... in my ex: an '87 765ti... and move about 50 ft. before the buick alongside me even moved from a standstill... *sigh* a real kodak moment... everything is in the pedal... I mean: finesse!... w/AW 71!

from my experience, the best way to do it in the 740s or any turbo'd car w/ AW71 is mash the brake, gas til 2400rpm, then slowly let it go of brake, but still hold it.

to perform a fabulus burn out in a open diff, which I've done in a 244 w/AW71, best way to make stuff slipper is mix with bleach and soap together, SMOKEY!!!

this is my infamous pic that got into SCC.

Its possible to get a decent burnout out of an open diff, but you gotta get those rpms up. And while you are, that passenger side tire is gonna be spinning hte rubber off, but its totally possible. I noticed the driver side started to spin after 3k rpms on one of my better burnouts

Be glad our drivetrains aren't reading this thread, Kenny, they might get scared and quit...

But yeah, there's nothing like a RWD turbo manual burnout ;) My best were pretty much as you described, rev up, drop clutch, tires start spinning, immediately stand on brakes.

I haven't personally done any with people in front of my car holding it back, but that sounds fun too...

I smoked the **** out of one of my tires the other night (limited slip would have helped :-( ) The power braking worked great.

i've noticed that with my truck, i got alot of nice thick smoke out of cheap **** brand tires, they toasted very nice several times. and well now i regret this a bit, because i am now running on rear tires that are severely deflated to allow the tire to wear more evenly on the outside of the tread. heh, been doin' this since august.

Both my tires like going at like 8PSI, when i had my 2.5 cat back i could barely get one. since i upgraded to 3 inch, spools so much faster instant posi to a 1 legger. I really need either locker or lsd

All my friends hate how my volvo likes to pick up the road and throw it, as it roast them :rofl:

I don't know if I read it somewhere or if it just came to me in a Volvo vision. It would be really easy to set up a spray system for your rear wheels running off a switch activated Volvo washer pump. Using like a 2gph irrigation nozzle, In all the smoke no one would see the spray. I could see it being used for 2nd and 3rd gear moving burnouts that would be really impressive!

I always thought that a higher tire pressure would cause a better burnout because it would cause the middle of the tire (the middle of the thread) to bulge and would spin easier

iirc, volvo offered this setup back in the 80s, it was for de-icing tires iirc, but i've often wanted to set up something like that...have it inject bleach or something for super smoke!

ATF works great for smoke as well...

You don't heel-and-toe, Kenny? I typically big toe the brakes while I little toe the gas, and play out the clutch to get it spooling, and then dump it. Once my left foot's off the clutch, I slide it onto the brake while sliding the right foot onto the gas.

Actually, my favourite thing to do right now is to be rollin' along in first gear at about 3,000, hold my left on the brake and floor the gas, and I start spinning without all the hurt on the clutch. You can slow it down, speed it up, do whatever. At high boost I can JUST about do it in 2nd gear, but I think I need less cam for 2nd gear greatness...

Thats my ram air playa! SEriously now it is, in the pic it wasnt-it just happened to fall off on a full boost run down the highway-i didnt use any fluid for my burnouts either. If you have a turbo -fluid isnt necessary.

I ripped off a pretty unacceptably rude three gear burnout last time it rained - while pulling out of the Hampton toll plaza in a marked company owned 2.4 Tacoma. "We are proud of our safe etc etc ...call 888 xxx xxxx" And they wonder why my truck needs bi annual u joint replacement:)

Those are some dark ass motherfuggin strips though, chigga wins in my books. I friggin love burnouts, the wheel wells on both my cars have a nice coating of melted rubber in them.

The volvo has been like that for a while and I just lightly coated the wheel wells in my mercury the other day, that sh*t won't come off on either car! The best is when someone says to you after you've done a huge burnout "Isn't that bad for your tires", no you idiot, you do that to recharge your tires, what the hell do you think, 1/2 my tire is now melted to the ground.

try a stock locker, works wonder as far as taking off & burn-outs, my car is relying on stock locker and it does fairly well, only complain is when drifting, it's kinda wacky that only one tire is smoking.

any turbo 940 should have a locker.

and Cullen, don't hate the playa, hate the game :-P

and this pic is one of my fav, it really sucks ass that I havn't done a proper burn-out this year nor I will.

hehehe 4.10 isn't too bad on the highway. Try driving a 16 valve with a turbo M46. I think I turn about 2600 rpm at 100km/h (60mph) so that's not too much different than with the auto. I still get fairly good mileage. Plus it goes through first ridiculously quickly.

You guys are all hella tight! Nice burnouts everyone!! I blew my 268K AW71 in my '87 be smoking the tires bouncing off the rev limiter just tearing it up one wheeled style. You guys should have seen my donuts cause it don't have posi like my '88 745T, aaaw man my buddies were crackin up, it was just slowly spinning in circles, couldn't really get it to swang on one wheel, funny as hell . . . !
