View Full Version : Bought a euro corner light for a '90 740 and it doesn't fit?

Someone broke my girlfriend's corner light while attempting to parallel park, so I decided to get her Euro corners (the half-and-half kind). The car is a 1990 740 GLE, so I went on Ebay UK and found right and left side corners. I made sure the car they came from was a 1990 non-foglight car(apparently 1990 headlights/corners are model-specific, although I can't tell the difference). Well, I got outbid on one of them, so I ended up with the left side. It finally came yesterday, and it does not fit. It has two bulbs, while the current factory one has one. However, that's not the issue (I could always cut the two bulb holders out and melt the plastic into one holder). The corner light is about an inch short, meaning if it were, in fact, installed, there would be about a 1" gap between it and the headlight. How the hell did this happen? What did I buy and what should I have bought instead?

This is the wrong thread for what you're looking for. Try posting in the maintenance and non-performance thread.:)

Hah! It goes with the "styling" part of it... I was trying to add a touch of Euro flare :P.

Yeah, the Euro corner lamps don't fit on DOT headlamps.

lol fair enough. I just figured it'd get more attention in the other thread.

Actually, the corners and the headlight unit itself are the same, and it's the mounting bracket and trim (between the headlight and the '90 specific grill) that's different.

-- Kane ... and the hood too, but that has nothing to do with the lights.

if you look at the back of the euro corners and look at the back of the DOT corner that was broken, you'll see why it doesn't fit

guess it's time for ecodes :-D

If it's the wrong size by that much, I suspect you got pre-facelift ones by accident. There can be a 10mm gap sometimes, but never as much as 1". Got pics of what you received?

cheers

This is the exact one I got:

Here's a link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4631131297

I can see why it doesn't fit bulb-wise, but even if it did, putting the US-spec up against the Euro-spec, there's a definite 1" gap... I'll try to explain with a pic.

Here are 1990 ecodes with the Euro signals...If youe has a 1" gap, I say they sent the wrong one...But..even if thay had sent the correct one, it will not fit with the US spec headlight buckets...The mounting tabs are different

Wait a sec...the gap is between the headlight and the indicator? I assumed it was at the back, against the wing!

A couple of people have crappy turns who might be interested in this one.

There are two versions of e-code corners just like there are 2 versions of DOT corners. Those for headlights with fogs and without. The foglight corners are tilted back to match the headlight angle and are one inch narrower when seen from the the front of the car. Also e-code corners have 2 bulbs instead of one. The easy solution is to cout out a section of the DOT headlights bracket and its an easy fit.

The light VadGTI pictured there is definitely a "without fogs" unit...which just makes the width question all the more curious in the light of your comments re: width, Justin.

Yep, the gap is at the headlight, not the fender (wing). Maybe the light is for a 440 or some other Euro-spec Volvo and the seller made a mistake?

What year is the silver Volvo up there?

1990 740

I noticed your's is a 1990gle 16v ...were there and front end differences on 16v vs 8v????

Nope. I'm guessing the e-code 90+ 'without fogs' headlights are wider than the DOT ones.

Looking at how it fits in relation to the hood/fender line..they look the same to me..

looks like you may of got 1990 turbo ones instead of 1990 NA as our turbos from then on got the later 940 front end

foggyjames

Hmm...we did get 740s with that front end, and the eBay listing suggests it also fits 760, 940s and 960s, which would tally with it being the 'with fogs' version....BUT....it really, really looks from the photo of the item there like the 'non fogs' version.

I'll tell you what will settle it....find the part number. I'll be a 7 (or so) digit number cast somewhere on the back of the unit near a 'Volvo' logo.

cheers

Well, of course, a part number would be nice... The problem is the part number is on a yellow sticker (says Bosch 951 Made in Sweden on it), and it's almost completely worn out...

However, I'm looking at it right now, as it sits in front of me, and I just noticed that it's slanted. The 740 front is flat, but the 760, etc. has the slight slant to it, bottom to top. The light is sitting at such an angle right now that I realize it has the same slant... Must have been a UK Turbo car.

likely, the only 700 here that had a front like yours were the NA cars.

If you want to be rid of it, hunt down people stateside with those lights and make them an offer...the indicators tend to take a hit if the bonnet isn't adjusted correctly.
