I just bought a 89' 740 GLE manual tranny for $250 bucks, it had 209,000 miles on the original engine when i bought it. since then me and my wife drove it to South Carolina to Myrtle Beach for Memorial Day.I was driving down 95 South from VA, cruising about 75 or 80 and had this little punk in a VW 1.8t come up next to me and kinda egging me on and took off. My wife being the speed demon she is asked me if I was just going to let him do that. so i drop it in 4 and caught up with him and 2 friends and it was on. Seemed to ride a lot smoother at 100+, but he kept up for a minute and i floored it and was gone. Now i'm suprised at what the engine can do with so many miles and just a tune up, so now i want to upgrade and get more. where do i start. PS i got about 23mpg on highway and 15mpg in town.

Thanks in advance.

It will likely need sleeves for the cylinder bores. Most of them do if it is worn out.

What I'd do with that three grand is buy a nice little 93+ 940 turbo.
Otherwise jy turbo+manifolds, intercooler+piping, ecu+wiring and exhaust, and tranny and +t it (do a search for +t) Normally aspirated mods = machine work for higher compression and displacement and nitrous.

Why would he need to sleeve it JL? He didn't say the motor was dogged out but even if it was w/o serious damage an overbore would do the trick wouldn't it?

209,000 Miles........ If it is untouched it will have enough of a ring ridge to need sleeves for anything looking close to a standard bore size. I've yet to open up a high miles (redblock)turbo motor that does not have well worn bores. N/A? My Mom's '80 242 with 200K+ miles on it still had cross hatch very close to the top of the bore when I had the head off to replace a head gasket that was leaking oil onto the ground. Them turbo motors are trying harder.
Al if the car is nice and you will enjoy it, make it into whatever you will really have fun with!!

Really? I never heard this, not that I am doubting youl.

Then a rering wouldn't be a good idea on a high mile engine without sleeving or bigger pistions. Now granted you will have to measure to be sure, but again never heard this.

I could still see the cross-hatch in the top of a 190k 940t bore. That's just what I observed in one engine I saw recently. I really don't have any opinion one way or the other as I have not been into any red blocks yet (knocking on wood).
