Like this?

I'm currently painting the grill frame black.
Sorry, no pics of that yet.

Headlights are 6"x8" (200 mm.) e-codes.
Headlight grilles are from a 740.

The first paint job didn't hold up well driving in rain.
Now am roughing up base chrome with emery cloth and/or steel wool, then painting black primer. That should last better.

Try using PlastiDip spray paint.

I'm told it doesn't chip. I'll use it when I repaint the grille on my 850.

Try using PlastiDip spray paint.

I'm told it doesn't chip. I'll use it when I repaint the grille on my 850.

I used pickup bed liner paint - yesterday. Black, with a highly textured surface.
Just for the frame - which used to be chrome.

I also used it on my '86, r.i.p.
I put it on the hood's leading edge nose. It held up very well, like about 5 years and maybe 100-150K miles or so.

Nice thing about the grill frame is you can pop it out whenever you want and spray a new coat on it - as long as you don't let the primer get blasted away by road crap. You also can spray any regular gloss or matte paint onto the pickup bed paint - which makes sense, that stuff is very thick.

I'll post pics when I can get some decent ones.

I still need to re-blacken the bumper's chrome trim.
So pics will have to wait a couple days at least.

I don't have pics handy, but I can provide a description of what I did on my '90 240DL wagon.

I took my original grille out of the chrome surround. I removed the "eyebrows" from the headlights, took them and the surround and roughed them up with steel wool and sprayed the flat black.

Then I took some 1/4" wire cloth (a welded wire mesh with 1/4" square openings, comes in various sized rolls) and cut a piece big enough to cover the entire grille insert. It shapes easily enough that, but cutting some slits at the corners, I was able to contour it to the old grille. I was even able to make an indentation for the diagonal strip of the emblem. This I did by taking a junked-up emblem, snapping off the snap-on nuts that hold it to the grille, and tapping the posts to accept a #4 machine screw. Actually, I even made the tap by taking such a screw and cutting a notch down its length with a cutoff wheel on my dremel. I ground down some washers to fit between the grille slats and screwed the emblem on with the new mesh insert sandwiched between it and the old insert. As I recall, I had to cut some slots in the edge of the new insert so that it would fit in the surround. There are some flat tabs on the surround which fit into slots in the insert.

I removed the new insert, sprayed it gloss black and attached some small strips of wire cloth to use as tabs to put screws through into the old insert (I used black anodized trims screws with built-in countoured washers). Then I cut away as much of the old insert as possible while still leaving the mountings for the emblem. So now, the old insert is an inconspicuous frame for the new one.

My only points of dissatisfaction are that I've had a few paint chips (so I'm glad to read the paint recommendations in this thread), and I wish I could have found that kind of heavy wire mesh they use on Jag grilles...

Oh, this is funny-- while looking for a pic of a Jag grille to show what I mean, I may have found a lead on where to get the material: http://www.racemeshgrilles.com/images/2006%20Jaguar%20S-Type%20upper%20grille.jpg

At any rate, the first time my mechanic, who specializes in '80s and '90s Volvos, saw it, he asked "So, did you get that from ipd?" So I guess it looks pretty good. I may cut holes in it for my fog lights, ala 242GT, mostly so I can get them out from under the bumper where they keep getting, well, bumped.

this is a grille from an old chevy, i believe. i cut it to fit and kind of threw it together real fast to see what it would look like. im not done with it though. i plan on putting the squaer volvo emblem in the center square opening, and then maybe some driving lights like Zyrex's car on either side to soften that middle gap. im not sure though. any suggestions would be cool

Can't wait to post some new pics of mine. Hopefully this weekend.
Grill frame is black now.

Corner lamps inner reflectors are now amber - so the amber shows up behind the corner lenses.
With so much black on the front the bling of the clear corner lamps was too much.

I just started experimenting with embedding a yellow-blue 3D logo badge in layers of casting resin. Black layers on the bottom, then one final clear layer of casting resin on top.

This experiment is not finished. I'm going to polish the front surface.

...Then I want to see about painting the grille surround to match exactly the blue body color of my 240. Maybe even the chrome on the slash piece, too. Or, instead, maybe the black strip inside the chrome.

There are a couple of guys in the UK who sell these Swedish flag-colored logo badges new on ebay.

Considering this was my first attempt and having never touched casting resin before, I thought it came out well.

The casting resin piece looks awesome!

Got links to instructions for this?

Bigscreen Bob
09-20-2008, 04:26 PM
I went to my local arts supply store -- Dick Blick.

http://www.dickblick.com/zz335/20/

The hardest part is removing the OEM Volvo logo badge insert that is glued into the "tray" part of the slash piece. Cleaning off the old adhesive takes a bit of doing.

Obviously, the OEM chromed "tray" acts as the "mold" for the casting resin, once it's clean.

As far as the resin itself goes, there are very clear instructions are on the back of the can of "Castin Craft" casting resin.

All you need is:

- can of Castin Craft casting resin
- little bottle of catalyst
- opaque pigment (I used black, but they have other colors)

My next step is to take it to the fabrication shop where an industrial designer buddy of mine works, to give it a professional polish. He's a plastics expert and his shop has all the right tools and materials for anything having to do with fabricating cool stuff out of plastic.

When my resin cured -- which took days and days, btw -- it didn't have a very smooth finish. The final polishing will make it look like factory. I will post here whatever polishing tips I learn from my buddy.

Given my obsession with cocobolo rosewood trim, I'm even thinking about embedding another one of the Swedish flag-colored logo badges into piece of polished, real cocobolo, cut the same depth as the badge and ultra-precisely cut to fit in the little inner holes and around the outside shapes, courtesy of a laser cutter. Then a top layer over the whole thing of clear casting resin to seal it all in, polished and shiny like factory.

Since it's easy to pick up decent used 240 grilles fairly cheap, why not have two or three different ones?!

A photo of the 3-D logo badge I used is attached. It's only slightly larger than the OEM logo insert for the 240 grille.

One word of warning...I have no idea what this casting resin will do after being subjected to the elements. My plastics expert may have an idea of a coating to apply over the whole thing to make it more weather-proof.
