Has anyone used the Perfectpower SMT5 or SMT6 tuning product for connecting a laptop to the LH 2.4 or similar ECU? www.perfectpower.com. Would this be better and easier than burning a new chip?

Turbobrick940 uses the SMT-6 on his 2.4 car... works wonderfully.

I'll leave the floor open to him at this point so he can tell you more about it.

The SMT6 kicks ass, more specific questions?

I'm currently using it for

Auxiliary Injector Control

Ignition Maps for all boost / nitrous

Aitflow correction

Do I have to put on extra injectors or any other hardware or can I modify the ECU settings with the SMT6 on the stock hardware alone? And, right now I have a BSR chipped ECU installed. Would it matter whether I used the stock ECU or the chipped one? What is the cost to buy, install and use the SMT6? They quoted me $337 for the piggy, harness, $14 for the cable and $210 for "preconfiguration" with the wiring diagram or $210 for the developers CD. The dev CD looks like the better deal but it's $$ expensive anyway.

You absolutely can, but will still be limited by the capabilities of the stock fuel system.

For all intensive purposes, probably no difference.

I would let them install it, and buy the cable. However I have the software to tune the unit, so.... :badboy: Those prices are pretty good.

i'm prepping a groups buy for these units on the mr2 board ( www.mr2faq.com ) (the smt6... the smt5 has been phased out)

prices SHOULD look something like this... i am finalizing it with the shop

For 9 units or less $375 each
10-15 units $345 each
16 and more $315 each
These prices will include EVERYTHING you need to hook this up to your car, the SMT 6 unit, wire-harness, COM cable (connects from the unit to your laptop) and the CD with the manual for tuning, installation guide, and tuning software (for both DOS and Win95 OS). Price also includes shipping to your door in the continental US, shipping may be a tad higher for you guys in Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada (I doubt more then an additional $5)

i won't be including the DEV cd... but i'll include everything from the cd that you'll need.. the DEV cd has a list of like 8000+ cars wireing diagrams, and all the info for the PRS (stand alone system from PP) basicly a ton of stuff you don't need.

instalation looks to be VERY easy... splice into the stock ECU's power, ground, and TPS then you splice the air flow signal (into the SMT and back out) and same w/ the crank angle sensor (or in the mr2's case cam angle) (they have a Download of a sample install for a BMW on PP's web page)

i'm looking forward to picking mine up... should help a lot w/ my turbo install on the mr2... then again if i get the 760 turbowagon i'm looking at megasquirt will do it's duities on the 2 and the SMT will be at play w/ the 760 :)

sorry for the thread hyjack.

As a preface, this response isn't a flame, it is a CAUTION and a WARNING. For the parties concerned the SMT6 install is NOT a simple do-it-yourself affair.

To suggest that the unit will come with everything is glaringly false (to those of us that would know the difference, that is). Point blank, if you buy this unit, and put it on wire for wire your car will not run.

The developers CD would be useless, as they don't have an installation guide for the LH Jetronic managed volvo, as the volvo isn't prepared for the unit without modifications. I would NOT recommend purchasing this unit except from an authorized dealer, and I would let them install it. I have aided the installation on an SRT-4 neon and a 97 Eclipse GS-T, those are straightforward installs, you won't get that with the Volvo.

Don't fool yourself, the SMT6 is NOT a direct splice in for ANY Jetronic car. AFAIK I'm the only one that spent the money and took the time to make it work. You need an O-scope among other things to set-up the ignition control, and figure out pull-up resistors, and etc. IT WILL NOT TALK TO THE EZK IGNITION WITHOUT SERIOUS R&D. You don't have a TPS so you'll have to figure out a way to scale the maps. When it was all said and done I had over twelve HOURS in the installation, at the shop, and that time wasn't absolutely free...

It quite simply wouldn't be simple on your Volvo, wasn't on my Volvo, and won't be for any Jetronic Volvos. Consider the distributor said it COULDN'T be done.

Good Luck,

ah thanks man... i haven't seen under the hood of a volvo still so don't know what to expect... if i manage to pick this car up i'll know who to come to for questions on installing it lol.

for most cars i'm told that getting the unit to control the ignition is the hard part... i'll see soon enough w/ my mr2.

so after instalation how did the unit work for you?
