View Full Version : how to "handle" a turbo?

I've been told I don't know how to properly drive my car. This is my first turbo, a 745T/M46.

Some say I shouldn't use boost when towing. How do you get a 1500kg trailer to move without using boost?

Some say I shouldn't decellerate in gear. Others say it's fine.

I guess I'm just too stupid to have a Turbo car. Anybody hane an n/a car for trade?

boost it towing the trailor. worst case scenario, you'll smoke the clutch out ;)

you can decel in the gears if you want, never hurt anything on my car

Do let it sit and idle for a few minutes after you've gone out and driven it around, or you'll be replacing the turbo soon...

When I towed stuff I turned down the boost to less than 5 lbs or so, reduces stress on car. Turbo's respond to load, more load (from towing) and the more boost the turbo puts out which can put a lot of stress on a clutch etc.

The risks from running boost in OD and loading it up vs running no boost in 4th are as follows:
In the towing world running boost to tow is cool, but there are a few rules.
1. Running boost of any kind and passing more oil through the turbo at lower oil pressure VS the turbo moving less oil through it at higher oil pressure from higher RPM in 4th lets the oil get really hot if you aren't paying attention.
2. Higher torque or higher power at low RPM is more liable to make a clutch slip, and OD slip maybe, though I haven't heard of a P type slipping with new fluid.
3. Assuming you are towing on the freeway the M46 4th gear is supposed to be quite strong, if you are doing stop and go, going up a hill in 3rd a high torque usually makes an M46 go BANG! , towing can't help.
Idling the turbo can't hurt.
These are the experiences relayed to me from a former buddy who towed a boat behind his SAAB 900 trubo.
If it were me I might get serious about an oil temp gauge, most cars that tow come with an oil cooler, as do turbo cars, it might be smart to get a temp gauge and maybe even install a 940 oil cooler that connects to teh water to go along with your OEM 740 oil cooler.
IF you keep the boost reasonable and keep things happy (don't let them overheat) you should do fine. I think my buddy still has his 900 turbo and boat, and his has some miles on it.
IF you keep the boost reasonable or run a larger IC ping should go away.

get yourself a nice turbo timer. like linuxman51 said... it'll let the turbo cool down. also... don't rev it up when starting. Yeah, it may sound cool, and look bad ass, but it's not good for the turbo/motor. let it warm up to the standard drive temp, and then have fun. until then take it easy.

have fun.
