POR also has two other versions of their high heat paint. It's POR 20 and it comes in silver and black. I like that manifold grey the best though. I've used their high heat paint on exhaust manifolds for many years with good results. But when it came to a turbo exhaust manifold I decided to try the Stealth Coating in the same grey from Johnsons Powder Coating. It came out great and I'm looking forward to trying it.

if you put normal high heat paint on it, it will burn off and leave your manifold blackish looking... it'l just smell bad for a week after you do it.
theres something out there, that you paint it on and its this goldish color, and once the mani gets to temperature, it turns into an aluminum finish. Pretty neat stuff.

I've got a Fluke Infared thermometer and ive used it on the exterior part of the manifold(par you can see and it measured ~500 degrees F. The part thats the hottest is the exhaust housing on the turbo and i measured ~700-800 degrees on my 13c, although these numbers were taken while at idle the ambient temp was ~85 and the car was hot(operating temp).
I haven't tried painting mine, but the por 15 exhaust manifold product is rated to 1400 degrees. :e-shrug:
Yes there is a gasket between the turbo and manifold but it's a metal type gasket.

there are 2 types of hgh heat piant at autozone, the normal block paint is rated to 500 degrees, but i saw this new one made FOR manifolds and its rated to 1700~2000 degrees. seeing that the por 15 is rated to 1400 wouldnt the autozone one work just as well? also on a side note..has anyone ever painted thier compressor ( i dont want to but just wondering)/ is htere a way to get rid of the rustyness of the compresser housing.. or is taht just a turbo for ya?
thanks for all the responses..TIA

I haven't tried any POR product on the exhaust housing of a turbo. But I did have my turbo exhaust housing coated with the same Stealth product I mentioned above. I'm sure you could try the POR stuff or another high temp coating. The manifold was coated inside and out but the turbo exhaust housing was only coated on the outside. They both came out really nice and I hope to put them on in the next week or so.

The compressor housing is the one that isn't rusted, the ehaust housing is what you're thinking of.

"StoveBright" spray paint - been using it for 10+ years and would only prefer a Jet Hot type coating over it. Comes in a few different colors (grey, black, brown) and I used to buy it at True Value hardware stores. It is paint designed for wood stoves.

I've never tried the POR stuff but Doug says it worked great for him. I have however tried the VHT 1500* spraypaint and I freaking love it. It really works extremely well. The surface needs to be beadblasted to get all the dirt and grease off, this is a requirement. Then you spray on 4 coats or whatever, put it in the BBQ on high for an hour, then install. This paint has lasted for over a year for me. The silver turns a bit yellowish, but that's okay. The red paint turns white after using the turbo. Get the silver. It NEVER flaked off for me, never had any problems with it and I have painted 3 turbos with the stuff. The only thing with the silver is if you touch a greasy glove to the hot manifold there will be a permanent grease stain there.
I tired to paint my downpipe, just by wirewheeling the surface then painting it. It did flake off. Once again, beadblasted surfaces are the way to go, my machine shop only charges like $20 to clean a small box of parts for me.
And yes of course you can paint the compressor housing, it's aluminum and doesn't get that hot. Bead blast it and paint it whatever color you want, I suggest bright silver.

it took two full cans to do my 164 manifold in flat red with the autozone stuff, I don't thin I'm so impressed with it. that paint is over priced.
I used por20 from ipd it looks real good, but you have to prep well, aka sandblast, it or it will peel.

is there a brite blue high temp that will withstand the heat??

In the photo above, is that the finish you get when it's new, or does it stay like that after a few thousand miles?
The reason I ask is 'cos the ceramic coatings (like the Jet Hot you mentioned) generally discolour after they've gotten hot for a few hours. They maintain their thermal properties, but they stop looking new pretty quickly.
At least, this was the case about 3-4 years ago, when I looked into it before getting the Ovlov's manifold done.
