Here ya go Eamonn, you asked for it...

short vid... kinda crappy... sound is lousy... but it runs again... this time with individual coilpacks... damn I love MS.

Does that thing run as smooth as it looks it does? Also is it wrong that I am slightly turned on by your intake manifold? Great work! Now add SNAIL!!

eh... it's not true coil on plug yet... just wasted spark... give me another week

and yes, we do rule... :)

Toyota Denso coilpacks... from a 96-02 Camry, and others.

They require a bit of modificating... the bolt hole-extension needs to be cut off and smoothed a bit but they drop right in and fit under the original plug wire cap.

Vid will not work for me either!!!

But all in all great job.. Glad to see some people here are doing instead of talking about what they are Gonna do...

Hey Mike,

That things looks like it runs really well - that's awesome. Does it leak any oil or did you get the head and cam carrier sealed up well?

I wonder why Volvo had to invent the B234 block. A 16 v head on the B230 blocks would've been so much cooler. Screw the balance shafts and belt driven oil pump.

Looking good man.

i'm gonna be a really big noob here but what do coil packs do exactly?

no need for a distributor or spark plug wires and they have mo powah!

nope... not yet... stock gap. autolite 63's right out of the box. I literally had just got it running 2 minutes before I pulled it out of the garage but it is something I'll experiment with.

Nice! Where is your toothed wheel and sensor?

Hi Igor, The toothed wheel is on the flywheel. Volvos with LH2.4 fuel system (89-later) came with a 60-2 (58teeth, 2-missing teeth) holes drilled into the perimeter of the large stepped 9" flywheel. Automatic cars had something similar on their flexplates. These engines also came with a flywheel sensor mounted on the back-top of the block to read the flywheel.... so I just took advantage of what Volvo gave me. :)

thanks man... well... I thought I did a good job sealing it, unfortunately it still leaks like a seive... even worse than before. :grrr: Same place... I'm going to update the head regluing thread to discuss further... I have some ideas as to how to fix it now...

i'm gonna be a really big noob here but what do coil packs do exactly?

more spark. with one coil, the coil has to charge and discharge 4 times for each cylinder (or more)... as RPM's increase, there isn't enough time to do this properly and you lose spark power. With 2 coils per pair of cylinders or one coil per cylinder, you regain that spark energy. Most newer cars are going to individual COP (Coil On Plug).

thanks guys!

are you using 4 vb921's?

Where is the trigger wheel (60-2) coming in through?

And just using the wiring diagrams on the MSnS-E site?

SOOOO COOOOL

are you using 4 vb921's?

And just using the wiring diagrams on the MSnS-E site?

SOOOO COOOOL

I have the 2 leads of the VR sensor coming into the board through at X12 and X13, and then up to the VR sensor conditioning circuit as part of the msns-e daughter card. The output from the conditioning circuit goes to pin 6 of U4....

Now, when I was using the DSM coilpack which did not have a built-in ignition module, I did have to use one vb921 per coil pair. These I wired up as in the destructions on the msns-e page... 1 wire going to RHS of R25, one wire to 12v power, the 3rd wire going out to the coilpack... I added a auxilliary db25 connector to my box (cut and paste) to handle the msns-e outputs and the vb921 outputs (1 per vb921) went through my db25 and out to the coilpacks.

Now, my Denso coilpacks have built-in ignitors... and I no longer need the vb921's... in that case if I kept htem, it'd be like having 2 ignition modules. In fact, I tried the Denso COP's with the vb921's in place and it wouldn't work.

Now, my denso COP's have a 12v and ground connection, in addition to the ignition trigger and an ignition trigger output (not used).....

So, I take my spark output from the LED's exactly as you would for msns-e distributor mode... ie. solder in a 1kohm pullup resistor between R23 (5v) and the negative side of LED17 and then solder in your spark output to the negative side of LED17 and out to the coilpack.... this sends a 5v signal to the coilpack ingition module. My modules fire spark non-inverted which means the coil fires when the voltage goes from 5v to 0v....

Right now, I just have wasted spark... I am using LED17 to fire cylinders 1&4 and LED19 to fire 2&3..... in another week or so, I will go to full COP and will have to add in 2 more spark outputs from LED18 and output3.

and yes... I'm using the msns-e instructions exclusively... that and extensive help from msefi.

I can post pics if you're interested...

ok, thanks!
it running nicely now! man, i really like the cop solution, the distributiororer (i cant even spell it) is a stupid thing, COP FTW! much cleaner instalation, no spark plug wires, better spark etc...

Im trying to visualize the whole wiring diagram, and how much more it would differ than the one im running now

absolutely... in addition to the performance benefits, it is definitely a more asthetically pleasing look. With the "spark plug cover" in place, you'd never even know they were there.

well sheeat... if the oil leak doesn't catch fire, I'll have to drive this somebitch over there this weekend... gotta test out the new clutch too!
