The Project Car ( Project 240 Refrigerator )

A 1975 242 Dl, Original Color ---- Refrigerator green

It sat in a field for the last 18 years and is pretty rusty but having a 1975 vin makes it worth the work (no CAT or emissions testing anywhere in the US,,,, EVEN CALIFORNIA!!!)

It was full of mouse droppings, mold, spiders, and funk

We stripped it down to a bare shell sans dash and glass.

It had a factory rebuilt b20 in it which is going into one of lawrences 140's. Apparently the car was parked right after it was installed.

Current plan is fuzy but there will be lots of welding and lots of tricks....

What exactly does your shop do? Is it open to the general public(volvo repair) or is it a call and order volvo performance parts shop?

In oregon all 1975 cars and trucks have to pass the same deq testing that i do. this includes deisels under 8500 gwr.

regardless, looks to be a sick car, i would love a 75 That is tons of tubing. i just called a place here and asked about that stuff. nearly 6 bucks a foot. HREW tubing will be ok for me. what size and wall?

i see a cold saw, a bender, but what is the machine to the far left?

Edit: AHA thats a damn fancy notcher. :-( i wish i had money for that kinda equipment. looks like fun.

I can't believe captain tubing didn't mention it already, but don't use ERW for a cage. You want seamless tube, like DOM. You could probably save some money using ERW in parts of the cage, but I wouldn't look at saving money on a cage.

From the 2006 SCCA SoloII rule book:
Appendix C - SOLO ROLL BAR STANDARDS
A. ..........
B. MATERIAL
1. The roll bar hoop and all braces must be made of seamless, ERW, or DOM mild steel tubing (SAE 1010, 1020, 1025) or equivalent, or alloy steel tubing (SAE 4130). It is strongly recommended that roll bars not be constructed from ERW due to quality and strength concerns.

2. a) Over 1500lbs.-min. of 1-1/2" o.d. x .120" wall or 1-3/4" o.d. x .095" wall

3. Each mounting plate shall be at least .080" thick if welded and 3/16" thick if bolted.

I left out some info, but this is the important stuff I think.

Yeah, the lighting is fine. The flash settings I used doesn't really show background stuff.

They use tanks. the process is very similar to annodizing aluminum, IIRC

As far as the tubing goes, what diffference am i actually looking at, strength wise, between erw and DOM? I'm actually prolly going to be doing an exo-cage on my truck before a cage in my car, but who knows.

for for kicks, im looking at 1.67 per foot for 2 x .120 erw and 5.26 per foot for 2 x .120 DOM. I understand that a cage isnt a good place to be looking to save money, but say i use somewhere around 100 feet, thats 359 dollars, extra, for the tubing alone. if its only 1.5 times stronger, i would rather put in some more bracing and call it good.

So youre gonna fix it up huh... So how did the floors end up looking?

I figured for-sure it was done, the first time I closed the door, and the rockers crumbled off, i thought, "how can I sell this ****?"

Im glad to see it went to someone that is gonna fix her up. Did the paperwork show the new motor, or no? They told me 100 times the motor was rebuilt, but i never had time to check the papers.

Well good luck man, I love to see that its in a better place than a junkyard!
Nice new wheels btw, it was sunk 5 inches in the ground and those rims were rusted so bad, lol

The rims it came with are hilarious, i have never seen a steel wheel rust through so the rim is separated from the hub....

The motor has a "VOLVO RECONDITIONED" plate on it but we never got any paper work, to my knowledge....

The floor isn't so bad, its most the rockers and some fenders.....

Its to bad it was kept in a field because it seems like it was a really nice car when it was parked,

all the wiring is mint condition as is most of the rubber, its opposite ever volvo i have ever seen... shot body good rubber and electrical?

You didnt get the folder of stuff? It had a bunch of repair and tire services and stuff. Ill call my parents, maybe i can get it down to you. That rim was seriously funny, I was just thinking "wtf"
It wasnt as much a field, as it was like a front yard with 20 trees. Hence the dents everywhere were fallen trees during that recent hurricane (2003). They were pretty stupid people, she bought a toyota and decided she didnt need to drive the volvo anymore, instead of selling it, she parked it. There were like 2 other random dodge vehicles from the 70s there too.

Did you count the TINY little ones in the bottom sector? Those two little cutouts about the size of a coin, probably triangle shaped?

I can trace about 150 triangle shapes made in that structure by combining 2 or more triangle cutouts into a larger triangle. 152 is my official guess.
