Drove from Eastern WI to Minneapolis, MN today (almost 6 hours each way) to pick up this car I found on Craigslist. Saw a lot of dead deer not only on the side of the road, but on top of cars. Took my brothers 744T which ran great. Pretty interesting and will make a great winter car. Needs a tune up and some bulbs replaced, but I'm not planning on spending much money on it. It's rusty (advertised as rusty but trusty), but it's rare and some of the parts easily bring back the cost - came with an extra set of virgos, year old snow tires, roof rack, and hitch (Draw-tite). Has new injectors and new CPR. It's black on tan with an M46. Odometer is not working but showing 259k miles. Has a stumble when it gets to 4 psi, but is actually quite quick and has a lot of NA power it seems. Owner was using synthetic engine oil and had a few other Volvos, so that's a good sign. I have the 3mm wrench, a dwell meter, a fuel pressure tester, and am quite familiar with K-Jet, so I think I'll be able to whip her into DD shape. Can't wait for it to snow as I've never had snow tires on a car before.

1983 242Ti Flathood. I'm pretty sure it's one of the homologated ones. It is factory intercooled, VIN # checks out, has silver tape under the hood, flat hood and grille, etc.

Needs moar sandpaper. How is the underbody and floor panels inside? Are the trunk's butt cheeks rusted too?

Not sure about the floor panels yet, but the butt checks are done for.

Invest in POR-15. ;-) That and get someone down in the SW to ship you some non-rusty wheel wells.

I actually still have some POR-15. Car would look good in flat black. There's a 242 in the junk yard near here, too, with the black cloth interior.

I'll have to decide if it is worth saving. We now have four 240s, a 740, and a S70 at the house. Sold my 940 to a neighbor, made my friend buy a 740, gf drives a 740, two cousins have Volvos, and Tiebird and I own two.

If the rear quarter panel is the only rust spot you might as well do it right and change it, I would invest in some 3M 8115 epoxy for glueing on panels it is stronger than welds and 3x stronger tha JB weld.Sandblast the rust spots and lay down some grey epoxy primer to stop rusting. We have used POR15 at our shop and it absolutely sucks, don't use it.Other than that nice car man, great find, sorry for the rant.

Well, got the new WI plates on it today (almost had to use zip ties), replaced burnt tail light bulb, ripped out aftermarket cruise control system that didn't work (I hate how other people wire in aftermarket stuff), got the OD to work reliably (and in every gear - PO had shop bypass 4th gear switch), and it even spools and starts better now. It was not boosting past 4 psi without bogging completely and spewing out black smoke. It was the accordian hose. Now boost to 11 psi just fine.

Almost in DD shape. Can't wait for it to snow.

Anyone know what relay would click by the heater fan area - at random times, sometimes fast? It's annoying.

You guys aren't as excited about this car as I am

Throw in a different fuel pump relay for sh!ts & giggles once. I vaugely remember my '82 buzzing & clicking for a few months before it gave up the ghost. Then again that was almost 20 years ago.
Can't find my relay location chart for the early 200's. :grrr:

that click may be the turn signal relay. The switch in the steering column needs to be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner that is plastic safe.

Your Fargo quote is even closer to the truth. I've never seen as much rust as I did in Minneapolis. Far more than in Detroit.

For that matter, I've never seen as many Volvos as I did in Minneapolis. Lots of rusty Volvos.

There didn't seem to be many old cars in Detroit, and that's probably because there are enough employee discounts in Michigan to keep most of the state supplied with relatively new cars. At least, that's how it was back in the days when you actually had to work for a car company to get an "employee discount".

Thank you. Everyone else has been ripping on it.

And Mr. dlot, why did I question you, Mr. 240 Turbo? You were right on that it was the blinker switch and not the relay like I had thought. Do you take it apart to clean it? Drill those rivets out?

JonnyScorch

i'd buy that for 500US.. **** if its a real black on tan flat hood that hot... normally they are the fugly silver on blue corduroy.. plus i live in the rust belt so finding cool old cars is hard.. finding a rust free 83 flat hood is impossible... and that rust doesn't look TOOOO bad.. just deal with as much as you can NOW and keep it in check..

also, are those nordfrost 3's? if so you're gonna love em! you'll never wanna drive on dry pavement again.. we have them on the 944ti and they are great

Well I've put 900 miles on it for the week that I've owned it and it's run pretty well. Stumbling under boost was from a worn out accordian intake hose. Think I might try the terminal 11 trick and shim the line pressure. Maybe some larger exhaust will help too. None of this will probably get done though, because I want traction in the snow. Maybe I'll weld the diff, we'll see.

RUSTY!!!!!

in the UK that thing would be worth the best part of 50, or $90:lol:

maybe less, as scrap metal prices are up at the mo, so cars are tending to get crushed rather than sold on:-(
