Here is the recipe for an atomic rod blow out.
1. 240,000 miles
2. ipd turbo cam
3. alky injection
4. msns-e with aggressive timing maps
5. 9mm rods
6. 18 pounds of BOOST

I guess you could this was a scheduled event but it always take you by surprise when it happens. The engine in the back ground is my 93 b230f with 60k on it. :badboy: :badboy:
Oh yeah, here are the pieces that I could find in the street while I waited for the tow truck. Its a good thing that I didnt waste my time on drilling the block for the oil return... because it was blasted right off of the side of the block. You can see the oil return boss in the pictures below.

Hard pull through first, push in the clutch and let it out for second...!BOOM! It occured at about 4600 rpm. The only warning I had was a knock light on at all rev ranges for about 10 seconds before catastrophy.

Oil and water all over the place. As you can see, it blew out both oil gallys on the side. This just happens to be right next to the red hot turbo and downpipe. It made the biggest smoke/steam cloud ever. I was the first one on the line at a light when it happened, and I know everyone behind me saw this and heard this happen. Yet no one stopped to help... what a bunch of a-holes. Merry x-mas.

Thank you. This thing was way fast for a long time. About 40k miles of +T wide open throttle, two clutches and one m47. Should I pull the head on my new engine just to clean the piston tops?

Your right. No assistance required. It would of been nice to have talked to a wittness. When you sit right in back of a disaster like this, it is always worse than it seems.

Why did you pull it?
There's three cylinders left.

Did the #4 piston smack the head or did you luck out?

wow big engine crash, kinda like the HD of our board...
How do the pistons look after 200K normal driving and 40K of abuse?

is (was) that block the thinner rods ie pre mid 1989??
jimjawz
11-27-2006, 12:04 PM
It is a k block. This means skinny rods. I am not sure about accual block difference.

I believe late K Motors Had Larger rods ie after Mid 1989 (of production of the engine).
Thats what ive read anyhow.
Sry to hear (and see ) your busted motor. I hope I have large rods ....

check the date code on your block, if its after june '89 then u probably had 13mm ones, either way no sweat... just build it again and less spark timing lol

9mm are the smaller rods
13mm the larger.
The Look like the thinner ones, but not 100%.
Would like confirmation of the K block smaller to larger rods - any1know details of this
(engine numbers from & to for example???)

Is this the date code? Is this Dec 89 (1289 ...) ??

Yeah, just unbolt the end of that rod through the hole, jbweld the block chunks back on, and up the boost to make up for the missing cylinder.

i think the date code should be on the passenger side, near the oil pan. could have sworn i saw an 89 there http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/10/web/2290000-2290999/2290201_59_full.jpg
any confirmation on that, jim?
according to the once all-knowing mcbrooms site, the K blocks had 9mm rods, but the improved crank bearing setup. some time in late '89 production run, they switched to 13mm rods http://web.archive.org/web/20040624005408/mcbrooms.com/volvo/fast700.htm
K Block + Cheap Gas + More than necessary boost = Big Bang
I never trashed a block but I did punch a silver dollar size hole through the number 4 piston running high boost. I suspect that I blew the tip off the spark plug.
Lucky for you B230's can be had for $200 and B230FT's can be acquired under $500.
It would have really sucked had that been a white block.

See the clock type of thing just beneath the embossed B230. That should tell you the date when the block was cast.

dig the carnage.
im hoping it has skinny rods. i like to think that the 13mms are basically indestructable.

dude, that is savage....
i guess with that kind of boost and high mileage, that could be expected.

I hope my block has 13mm...I plan to +t one of these years. I'm pretty sure mine was a later model K block because my car is a 90'.

Nice man! When my '85 B230F blew it happened when easing away from a stoplight in 1st gear, then just pop! crunch crunch crunch die. #1 rod broke on mine and chucks of the block flew up and broke the dizzy cap so it died right away. Funny thing is that it happened with very little load, and that was just after a hard freeway run of 15psi where it worked great.

My car was built in 05-88. I think that the engine is an 87-88. I am pretty sure that the rods are skinny. My new block for sure has the 13mm.
Damn.. nicely done.
My old car (764Ti which I sold to a friend) has the weak 9mm rods. It currently has 320,000mi on it and is running 14lbs of boost. Still idles like a kitten. Just to remind us that the early turbo K blocks don't totally suck. ;)
Early K+T running 18lbs? I'm impressed.
It seems a theme that here. A lot of people's blocks let go while under light load. Interesting. :???:
I certainly hope my K blocks live for a while longer. Of course, only one of them is a +T. ;-)
Anyway, that's some amazing carnage. Both sides of the block? Wow!
And only on TB can you have a catastrophic engine failure and get from everybody else what equates to a slap on the back. I love it. :)

Me too! The first thing I thought was..."I cant wait to get the engine out and post pictures on our beloved Turbobricks.com" I also apologized to my Volvo instintly after it happening...as if I just caused it to happen. I dont even apologize to people. I love Volvos!
