How much trouble is it to remove the tailight lens from the light cluster and repair it with a fresh one? I know it can be done but I need advice on a decent removal method, one that wont break a lens or the cluster itself. I really can't see buying a new unit when only the corner brake light is cracked.

i know exactly how you feel. mine is the same way. It is possible to do. the people at the cheapo dealership fixed my tail light the same way.
The way i have heard of it being done is to use a dremel to break apart the old piece and carefully pry out the better piece out of whatever junk cluster you have, Then just glue it in.
Im guessing that would be a good way to do it. Kind of like with those clear turnsignal pieces for 240s

Heat it up with a heatgun/hairdryer and that'll soften the glue, then they should pry right out. I did this to my front turnsignals when I removed that little orange reflector on the side. Tried it without the heat at first and it started cracking the plastic.... heat worked like a charm.

Or you could just buy my taillights, I found another set today that are Perfect!

Good that is what I expected. Yeah that little faded orange reflector came out of my turnsignals easily. That was like the first thing I ever did to my car. I may do that to my GF's 91 244 I don't know if shee will notice! I still havent figured out a decent cheap way to get the inside of the turnsignal reflective other than that awful "chrome" paint.
Fire made it good...

yea but what if that nice lens is at a junkyard and your too cheap to buy the whole cluster. then you have to carefully remove it without a oven or hair dryer

Knife, small screwdriver, ya know stuff. Just do it slow and cautiously that's all.
You could try to breathe on it!!

Yeah, I'm full of hot air! Finally I can put it to use! :-D
The original Valeo lights are glued with the kind of glue that welds the parts together, hot air won't do a thing. Dremel only way to go.
Or you might be lucky to have a aftermarket light. They usually are glued togeter with regular sticky glue=heatgun and prying no problem.
