View Full Version : Making own Lower Chasis Bracing (240)

About a year ago t-brick member "gsellstr" made some lower chasis braces for a 740 out of aluminum bracing. Then "YellowT-r" stated that he may have some issues with it because of torsional flexing. Well wouldnt a stock Volvo sway bar of any kind (when welded up correctly) solve the problem of the front chassis torsional flexing? I have a few sway bars in my garage and was wondering if these would work given the price of ipd's chassis set(ugh) and did a search. "gsellstr" had a great thread on it and if sway bars would work as another material then i'll give it a shot.
-I have a few heims joints to work with as well.
-Just a gasless mig for welding.
Thanks a bunch,
Adrian

welding the steel of swaybars is possible, but difficult, depending on the steel it needs to be glowed and special welding filler/wire etc. let alone welding that thickness with a normal flux core welder. you need some serious current to get good welds...
if i were you i'd try to find some strong/tick walled 1" pipe, much lighter, easyer to weld, better strength/weight ratio (eg equal cross section hollow pipe is stronger that a solid bar, except for tension, then it should be about the same)
using a swaybar is possible, don't get me wrong. if you have a few, you can use it. the fabrication will be more difficult though.

I welded lug nuts inside a piece of steel conduit for my lower brace. It goes straight across, under the bellhousing area. It fixed the "shuffle" I was getting while autocrossing.

i welded all the pices of flat steel together and drilled the holes the exact size of the bolts so its a extremly tight ft so it cant move
i wana see some pics of the sway bar setup

Flat bar will bow in compression. Tubes are much harder to bow, and are lighter.
I have pics, but I think they are not on my pbase any more.
