View Full Version : What the deck height?

So I finish installing the rods (was waiting for a stretch gauge), and double-checked something that looked suspicious--I have about 0.014" positive deck height. What the christ? I need a dial gauge to know exactly what I'm looking at (I just checked with some gappers and a straight-edge). Now, I didn't check deck height on teardown, but I don't recall any piston-sticky-uppy on the stock rods. These are the rods from stereophile, has anyone else installed these in a whiteblock? Did my machine shop somehow manage to knock 14 thou of the c-c distance when resizing? I really can't seem to explain it...

So once I figure out how high they stick out, I'll get a custom gasket and set my quench height that way, but still, http://www.pbase.com/765ti/image/72978480.jpg

last I have been able to determine the HG's are 1.47mm thick compressed height.

Somehow I think you are fine... but that is very interesting...very

I checked the remaining pistons, and it looks like the max height is no more than 0.018, so as long as the compressed height is greater than 0.053/1.34mm, I'm gold. Where'd you get that number? 1.47 would really be great.

I'll throw a mic on Scotts motor but iirc they tend to come up a hair above deck level

That's a good height.

You can always put some clay covered in baby powder in the combustion chamber and then check to make sure you have at least 0.060 between the tp of the piston and head.

Cheers,

Sounds like a good height to me! +.019 is what I set my B23 to. BUT! For your engine I'm wondering if the pistons will come up too high and maybe cause valve interference!?? Just be sure to rule that the heck out before you button it up.

Ya, my initial reaction was "hey, free squish!", but then I got scared. So 1.47 (or so) is right on for me, if thats a pretty accurate comp HG thickness. I'll check the valves, hopefully I'm not boned!

Chris, you got an old head gasket lying around? Fit it up with that to check clearances before the build proper. I kept my old HG today for just that reason.

i had meant to, but after searching for about two hours last night, I gave up the search:-( No idea where it went...

that's a bummer.

Did the machine shop deck the block at all? How did you measure the squish or above deck height of the pistons?

FYI for visual reference this is +0.019"

Say it's Doug, and make it say something about donuts.
