so I have the e-codes, and they use h3 55w for high beam, and its not enough for what I need, I need the brightest mother****ing h3 55w I can get, so I can get to our new cottage.
I wish there's some mountains in Ontario.

Why don't you just get some HID's for the LOW beams, and you will be set.

H3 models are available.

it's by far not just the wattage...
Osram Silverstar (NOT sylvania crap), Philips visionplus, Narva Rangepower +50 (AWESOME if you can find 'em), or Tungsram Magalicht (again, awesome if you can find 'em)
i've got some 110w H3 bulbs (dunno the brand)... and some 55w Narvas... the Narvas throw out much more usable light.

I have D2S HID 4300k for the main chamber, and 4300k hid for the fogs.
but I need bloody high beam to avoid those crazy animals.

Your telling me that your 4300K HID's don't cut it?
That is hard to believe.
I suggest you get HID's for the high beams then too. 4300K's up to 6000K. As you probably already know, 4300k-5500k have the most light output (Lumens).
I don't know if all Volvo's are like this, but I know that when my High's are one so are my Low's.

HID's blow for distance imo.

Not surprising if the HIDs are installed in lamps designed for incandescent bulbs. :e-shrug:
Anyways, Sam, you should be running relays, heavier wiring, and such regardless of whether or not you are running overwattage bulbs. Better wiring will improve any setup.

run the high and low beams at the same time.

Get some wiring, relays, and some nice bulbs of your choice. I'd probably go with the 55W Ultra High Efficacy Plus 50 (Narva Rangepower+50 exclusive) at $13.50/ea.

4300k-5500k have the most light output (Lumens).
The color temp has nothing to do with output, but the bluer (higher kelvins) they get, the greater the dispersion (glare). People see glare as "bright".
Chigga, get some auxilliary lights on that thing. With a large reflector, none of this pony keychain light stuff.

the HIDs are not hooked up yet, but I'm not going to aim high, and I KNOW for sure I'll need high beam, even on the e39 the high beam was barely enough when there's no snow on the road to reflect the light.
and Mr. MikeyP, I don't think I'm going to run the pods, it'll be quite work just to go to the cottage, the roads are very nice, and I think there are about 3 houses on that road.

Yeah, just add relays. They're cheap. Do it.

from SHARPHID, are the HID bulbs just plug and play? im new to HID and i dont know much about it. all ive been told is that its just a gas filled bulb and is up to 200% brighter than a standard bulb. but $200 for a pair or 8000K blue HID bulbs? isnt that a little much? whats so great about HIDs?

everyone seems to think that if you have HID's thats all you need. but HID are for dipped beam are set to cut off the same as a normal bulb. meaning after about 50-60 feet that it's no more light and at speed that just isn't enough.
hence having a nice bright main beam's. get some ring all weather H3's in your mains. they come in 100W and 55W. i had 100ws in the driving lights on my old 240, combined with the 80/100w all weathers in the main lights let me see out to 150-200meter.

Another vote for 100W or 130W H3 with relays. Cheap and effective.

If you're gonna do HIDs, do em with lamps designed FOR HIDs, not with e-codes designed for incandescent bulbs. Better low beams don't let you drive faster, they let you drive the same speed, slower. First, they don't project light that far down the road (by design), second because they do light up the road real close to your car, they kill distance vision. If you need better distance vision, get some aux lights (or some 100W+ H3s fer yer high beams in the high beam positions.... the Volvo e-code high beams are pretty nice, altho I'm not too thrilled with the hotspot).

It's funny that the guy with a s70 automatically says get HID's.... To me at least.
Just add the relay's not too hard, an earth wire, a wire from the battery to the relay and the activating wires from the headlamps into the relay and output into the headlamps the difference of a few volts is a lot more then you think.
