These pistons are for 8 valve heads.

It may not be running for a while though. I'm still working on getting the head ready and some other stuff too.

wowie, makes me wanna buy some of those goodies from John V and build somethin up.

What would a machine shop run you to have a block cleaned up, and bored out if necessary?

Wonder if I could use internals like that on the B20 in my 1800....she's needin a rebuild. Wow, that is hot. If only I had t3h mad bank....and a shop and a knowledgeable mentor. :-P

Holy ****, What kinda power you expect from it? Those Rods are Huge!!

Sorry for my excitement over the large rod, just never seen one that big.

you can, i am. he has the rods in stock if you have a 8-bolt crank. pistons only take a couple weeks.

Wouldn't those rods and pistons be lighter?

Is the rotating mass going to be rebalanced?

They are much lighter.

Four cylinders are neutral balance (not sure if thats the right term). You just make sure that the rods and pistons weigh the same as each other and spin balance the crank, flywheel, clutchcover seperately with no weights involved like a v-8.

Thanks for the comments guys, hopefully it will be running by summertime.

Ola Compadre Fidel!
I just put in an order for some more pistons and currently the schedule is "about 4 weeks.....or so"

And yes these rods also fit that later B20, and those rods are in stock.
If fact there's a lunatic who is going to get 6 for a B30, yeeeeooow!

So how much $$$ have you put into the engine with the machine shop service and the new internal parts?

Pistons were $720.00 with pins, wire locks, and plasma moly rings.
Rods were $492.00 with arp bolts.
John did the fitting of the small end bushing to piston pin.
I spent $340.00 at the machine shop for hot tanking the block, checking the block for cracks, checking for line bore (not necessary on mine), cylinder boring, block decking, checking crank for cracks/straightness, machining crank for bearings, and balancing the crank, the rods and pistons did not require balancing.
The pistons are expensive but I think they're worth it.

This cost about the same as the pistons :omg:

Only reason I can afford to have some fun is because I wasn't paying much for rent this year so I saved a lot of money. In 2005 I was paying $1550 a month for an apartment (socal sucks).

How much are bearings costing you guys over there? I just got a quote- standard big ends and mains= $280 at trade price. :wtf:

Nothing you can do about that little tiny bit of surface rust, it will be just fine.

Wow, they are really cashing in on those prices. Check this page about halfway down at FCPGroton. They are quite a bit more reasonable. Even with shipping it shouldn't be more than half the price you've been quoted. Now, if I priced the parts from Volvo over here they might be like what you have been quoted. http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvoengine/volvoeng940b230ft.htm#bearing

Looking forward to seeing all this new Volvo hp is going to run. Nice buildup!

these blocks tend to have some rust spots quickly after being cleaned and machined. I tried to cure the process with some motor oil and then plan to paint it in the next 2 days.

i just dabbed some oil on my fingers and worked it around the areas rust was starting and pretty much the entire underbelly/inside of the block

That helps.
Cut down on lattes, ditch the cell phone, cook your own food.
Buy parts as you can afford them and collect them on the desk to taunt you with their presence.

The rust you see is in the water jackets, it is almost impossible to get that out. It won't cause any problems.

I got my main bearings for $56.81 and rod bearings for $20.11. They are Glyco/Federal Mogul/oem. I can get parts at wholesale through my work's account. Volvo wanted $113.05 for mains, $58.85 for rods. Those are also wholesale cost.

The machine shop owner suggested using dexron atf to clean the cylinder walls. It cleans the honing dust out very well and works okay to break the rings in on startup. After I cleaned the bores with brake spray I used some atf on a rag and got lots of black stuff out.

Those bearing prices I quoted weren't genuine Volvo by the way! I just spoke to the machine shop and told them to regrind the crank if needed but NOT to order bearings for it.

Nice build, by the way- sorry for the slight threadjack.

Got my head back last week. Had 38mm stainless exhaust valves installed, port and polish, and valve unshrouding done. It looks even better than the pictures.

Didn't see anyone else comment on this. The MLS headgasket has 4 rivets that hold it together. The rivet that is on the front, close to the t-stat gets squeezed between the head and block:wtf:. I removed this rivet, I hope other people didn't install it with the rivet in place.

Now I'm trying to pick out a turbo, and waiting for the cam I ordered. Hopefully it will be running by summertime.

When you have something Hot Tanked at the machine shop, cast iron will rust the moment its exposed to the atmosphere. Some rust in the water jackets is no biggie.

we had been trying to get out an e-mail to everone concerning that rivet Wennstrma.

Cometic had a b23 and b230 block, but aparently not all are equal right there. It is fine to cut that rivet off.

Since then the design has been updated so this is not an issue...but it is ok from Cometic to cut that rivet.

Sorry about that.
