View Full Version : So, I screwed up big time..........
Bit embarrasing this one....
I got my MSnS-E to the stage where I needed to power it up and check the sensors etc.
In the meantime an update became available, 29v.
Having one of the blondest moments of my life, I installed it wthout uninstalling 29t first, then ignored the warnings that Megatune gave me about the .ini being wrong and the potential for serious trouble if I continued.
I now have a laptop that tells me it's not connecting (although it tells me the controller version is !!!!????Boot) and a frozen MS box.
I assume that I now have to reload the code to the processor, but that is kinda beyond me. Can someone tell me what to do and hold my hand through it?
I've posted on the MSExtra forums but I know that this one moves much faster than that.
Us old farts sometimes struggle with these new fangled computer thingies! :-(

Reflash, Just Connect And Click The Batch File
Ok- in English please?
Some of us are not too computer literate!
What's a batch file?
I'm assuming you mean I just connect the laptop, start Megatune and click on something to make all the bad stuff go away and make my MS work again?
I've tried to send a map Kenny gave me to the MS but it claims to not be connecting, although it can read that the wrong version is on there.
I've tested the com port and the serail cable and both are fine (I managed that much at least!)
But the Communications test in Megatune tells me there's no response.
Do I not have to short a jumper or something to allow it to reflash?

Check the MT ini file and make sure it is set to the correct type of firmware. If that's off sometimes MT will act like it can't connect.

Ok, I'll try that. By the way, on MSExtra they're asking for details from those who've successfully done COP- I said I'd ask you to tell all.

batch file is the firmware file that has a sprocket in it, when you click it a dos window will open and guid you through it

well... it's not quite there yet... :) I succeeded in frying the 2nd trigger portion of the chip because I was supplying it a 12v signal rather than the maximum 5v signal.
My new chip came in last night, so I shall retest tonight.

Bertie,
in addition, you should take your time and get used to reflashing... periodically, things will just go haywire for whatever reason and require a reflash.
Lord knows how many times I've fubared things and had to reflash... at first I was terrified, but now it's old hat.
Yeah, it's just 'cos it's something I've not done before.
As an aside, what with making the loom, rewiring into the original loom where needed, installing the LC-1 and the AFR panel- I never want to see a soldering iron again!

i rarely reflash, and do not even start the laptop often
I'm looking forward to it being thesame for me, but by the time I've got the hang of it properly it'll hopefully be time to drop my 16v turbo lump in, so it'll be back to square one.
Oh, one more thing- can one of you guys pm or email me the inc files for the coolant temperature sensor please?

Bertie, didja get it running?
Bertie, didja get it running?
I've not had time to sort it- Mrs BB's been complaining about how much time I've been outside working on the car, so to avoid a domestic I' left it alone yesterday.
I'm off to see my parents today and then down the pub with my dad tonight, so I'll not get a chance to work on it until Saturday.
I'll let you know as soon as I know though.
Quick update.
I tried to download the firmware and got the error message
Download failed. Was expecting "Boot>" and got ""
Tried it again with the boot loader jumpered and got the same error message.
Bugger.

hmmm...
Does it ask you a series of questions first once you open the downloadfirmware.bat program?
which option did you select? yes or no?

which com port are you using?
COM 1. I've done the tests described in the manual to establish that the port and the cable are both working fine.
COM 1 also works fine with the LC-1. I had this problem before I installed the LC-1 onto that COM port though.

go ahead and download new firm ware from the msnse site, and start from scratch there, is it possible he needs to put in the bootloader? i think i had an unresponsive board once and we had to put the boot loader jumper in and load again, worked fine afterwards
just read about boot loader, try w/another laptop maybe

Make sure you don't have anything else open? Megatune and maybe your LC-1 software will tie up the comm port.
I've installed the LC-1 software after I had this problem, so it's not that.
I'll try downloading the latest firmware and go from there.
Sorted it. I noticed when messing about in Hyperterminal that I couldn't cycle the power on the ignition key despite the feed switching correctly.
So I pulled the connector apart and when my testlamp touched the fan output the fan started- bloody thing was back feeding the MS!:grrr:
So I snipped the wire, opened Megatune with no error messages, cranked the engine and got an rpm signal! Sorted! :-D
I've still got issues with the fuel pump not operating, but that's easy enough to deal with.
I wired the fuel pump relay output to the original relay and wired the injectors to it too, so something's still wrong there. I expected a few niggles so I'm not bothered really. My IAT reading in Megatune is 3C, though, and I can't feel my toes, so it's time to come inside.
A roast beef dinner cooking in the oven seems much more appealing than kneeling on freezing cold concrete. :-P
Anyways, thanks for the help guys- I really appreciate it.
