PacNW Aug 10-13, 2007

Welcome to the official planning thread for PacNW 2007

Date - August 10, 11, 12 & 13
Location - Slocan Valley, BC Canada
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Winlaw,+B.C.&ie=UTF8&z=7&ll=48.944151,-117.883301&spn=5.318234,13.886719&om=1

Accommodations: Karibu Park Cottages & Campground http://www.karibupark.com/
I have tentatively block booked 5 cabins, these are available on a first come first serve basis and will only be held until February 23, 2007
Cabins have either 2 queen or double beds and cost about $100 per night (since they sleep 4 people that is only $25 each per night)
We suggest that you talk amongst yourselves and agree upon roommates you would like to "bunk" with, then reserve right away.
If the cabins become fully booked there are some trailers in the campground they rent out at a reasonable price, These are not serviced so you have to use the campground facilities, but it is a dry place to sleep.
Camping is also available but again I recommend you book a spot, tent sites cost about $15 per night for un-serviced sites, for more information http://www.karibupark.com/campground_rates.htm
Reservations, call 1-888-452-7428 to book your cabin (please book the cabins as a group of 4) or campsite & pay deposit –
Mention you are with the TurboBricks Group

Hhahahahah Amar is talking about bunking with a buddy, and going to FRUITvale...

I love making fun of guys I haven't met yet. Trust me Amar, I'm going easy on you, ask those who've met me;-) You can take the piss out of me at the meet

Looks like an awesome plan Ian! I'm going to have to wait a little while yet to confirm on my sleeping arrangements- I'm hoping to have a hottie co-driver, but it's a bit early to plan that just yet...

Awesome. My only problem is if it conflicts with Hot Nite in the City in Kamloops. I am set up to be in that. Meh no worries on that it's my issue to figure out once I get a date for Hot Nite.

Last thing I want to do is drive around with a bunch of girls, who for the most part, will mostly complain "why doesnt your ac work? your car is noisy, na na, na na na na na, na na."

and they'll just weigh my n/a down.

edit: might bring a buddy, his g/f and a girl for myself... maybe just get a whole cabin to ourselves... we'll see tho. I kinda don't like the idea of 4ppl in my car

GREAT plan Ian! I love spelunking, I haven't been in like 6 years though. Sounds like an amazing place where we can really hang out and do some neat things as a group. Thanks for un-officially being the coordinator! :-P

sorry, the word just sounds funny. Can't say i've ever heard that word being used before.

I once went spelunking in the sea lion caves in Oregon....

I only have to travel 1,337km for this one! (ok actually 1,137). But the trip sounds great. Not sure if my g/f will be coming, I think I'm going to suggest she stays home actually. My winter driving has rattled her enough as it is :oogle:.

cool. sounds like lots of driving and lots of fun.

I'm for sure interested in a cabin, but not terribly sure who i want to bunk with, or much less if anyone else from oregon is coming. Regardless, i dont really care, and will be coming either way. i dont currently have a girlfriend, or anyone else that would be interested in coming with me, but maybe that will change in the next 6 months.

well, yea, forgot to mention that. thats with me going through bellingham. im prolly going to do that, or go up to vancouver or something. if i go through spokane thats close to ten hours, and i would have to stop somewhere, thats just a bit to long for me to be driving. the downside is i dont know of any t-brickers on that route, and i was hoping to avoid paying for a motel in some random city. plus driving all that time by yourself is just plain boring,

so i guess thats my next question. Anyone is the bellingham/vancouver area willing to put me up for a night? Two, actually, counting the trip back. Seems to be thursday night and monday night, or possibly sunday night, depending on whoever's willing to put me up plans

If not, i can motel it, no biggie. i can buy dinner or whatever, and i dont take up much room/can camp.

Thanks guys.

As I recall (and it has been many years since I was up there) there is a KOA campground in the Spokane area. $33 for a tent space according to this: http://koa.com/where/wa/47107/ Almost as much as a dive hotel room. However, a 10 hour drive isn't that bad. Leave here at 7:00 and you'll be sipping cola by 5:00. I'm tentative for this year, although we will have a newborn baby so spousal unit may frown upon me leaving her with 3 kids. After having to work last year I swore that I wouldn't miss this year...

coldfusion21
02-10-2007, 12:18 AM
im one of those people tho. a 10 hour drive may be just that, but i will turn it into a 13 hour drive after my rest stops and food breaks and all that.

thanks for the tibit about the KOA thing, thats a good bit of money for a place to slap a tent though.

b4_ford
02-10-2007, 12:30 AM
KOA prices are a bit steep. If I do go we can caravan. That way a 10 hour drive can become a 2 day drive after breakdowns and other assorted mishaps!

SWEET! Awesome plan Ian, thanks for laying down the path!

I'm totally there. Just thinking about this trip makes me want to keep my 244, just so I can make sure I'll have a car to make the trip with.

I've driven over 700 miles in a day before, well(actually I was a passenger for about half of it), and I can totally imagine myself doing the 550 or so in one day. According to google maps, that's about the distance. I'm not worried. :)

I can't freaking wait! I think I'll stay NA to make this trip. Maybe no turbo for me after all this year, or maybe after I come back from this trip. We'll see, of course. Argh, I need money. Someone buy my 244! Oh wait, but then I won't have it to turbocharge it! What a dilemma.

I could be persuaded to staying somewhere the night before, and maybe after if need be, but I'm not really adverse to making the complete trip. I can't remember how far I drove in one day on the way home last year, could've actually been somewhere around 700 then???! I forgot about that. So maybe I have driven 700 miles straight before. Coolness!

yah, there better not be 4 ppl. Im thinking it'll be solo or w/ a buddy.

i've made some good times and decent gas mileage on coquihala and the number 1 last summer.

trips to hope I've done in just under an hour from Surrey. Super light car, not much traffic... and I tried to hold a speed of 160km/h hitting as high as 185 on a nice summer afternoon,

nowadays i don't like to push it like that anymore.

Sounds like a good response for this event so far.
I know it is early, but remember this event takes place in the height of the summer season in a very popular area. Although we will do EVERYTHING" we can to find room, I would still recommend that you make reservations to guarantee a spot.

has Anyone made reservations yet?

Matt Dupuis
02-16-2007, 12:38 PM
Yes, Ian & Joan, Dale & Beth, and my family (Roberta & Amber) are locked in at the moment.

It's important for everyone to know that you're responsible for making your own reservations. Saying "count me in" or "I'll be there" doesn't mean you'll have a place to stay, unless you take care of that yourself. All the information is in this thread, thoughtfully composed by Ian, so if you're coming please take advantage of his thoroughness and take the time to register.

And start saving $$$ for gas and whatnot. Ya might want a reserve too if you can swing it, in case of breakage. But that might just be my slightly puckered nature...

amargill19?
02-16-2007, 12:43 PM

To retaliate, I quit my job and took a new one! :)
Soooo, I have to wait to start the new job before I can book any time. Still a couple weeks off. I'm keeping my hopes up.

Anyhow I seem to recall reading there are tent sites. I have absolutely no idea what will be going on in my life when this meet happens but I own a tent and I will have a working car (damnit I better). Anyhow yeah anyone need someone to fill in a spare spot in their cabin or know of tent spots?

now that I read the whole thread I'd come to Kelowna too,
and for sure on the drive that is great country will look into some place to sleep,

all those older Volvo's in that part of the country will have the RCMP jumping, last time I drove through Nakusp I was stopped to make sure I wasn't a drug dealer, when I told the people I was visiting they told me it was all about the 83 244 GL I was driving.

I guess I should take more days off loike today and catch up on stuff.

Anyone interested in dyno time (date still undecided) shoot me a pm so I can see what we can work out. Specify if your interested in tunning time or just want a pull to see if all the ponies are still where they should be. Matt I can't put into words how sweet it would be to have you around for this. I have your accommodations already arranged. John, Leivon, and myself are in.... so far.

I would be up to a day in Kelowna, yes we had a couple heavy snow days in this part of BC, I like how the snow is sitting on the side marker.

I am trying to convince my wife that she should drive the 122 to Winlaw and I'll bring the trailer down, maybe Jordan and Cassie could fly out and bring the 122 down we'll work on this, my daughter and her BF are thinking of coming in her "new" 93 240. maybe JP could come in his 84 245, my youngest son in his 84 245 and the step daughter in my 740, jeez just my family could fill the cabins!!!!

I have marked the weekend on my calendar, this is my backyard from my youth (when some people thought I was a hippie).

Nightburnz, ur sig is wicked awesome. That is a very clean, slick looking white 242 as well.

I'm looking at a 242 tommorow, hopefully if all goes well and it isn't a piece of crap, i'll be driving it home tommorow. Hurrrrah for a 5 speed and factory turbo/intercooler git'up.

I would be into a Kelowna run for sure as my brother lives in Armstrong...so I could swing a quick visit!

No... Greek is a language. Were going for a little drive, you coming?

Hot Nite ehh.. Hawt nite? hmm... No comment. "Volvo" to roll, not to show! Come on man get with it, step on the gas.

John, you are not driving half way across the states for a bit of track time and a party. Last time I checked most parts of the states don't like us Canadians very much. To anyone else thinking of skipping out this year understand that Northern BC is one of the most amazing places to drive"." Next to Vancouver Island (Only cause they lay new pavement every year. Anyone ever driven the road to Tofino?) Id say the roads around and the ones to get to will be well worth every minute of wrench time we put in this year. So put me on that list! Wouldn't miss it for anything.

Well unless maybe a fuel line were to break, while I was getting gas, just about to leave town. Na... id just pull out the proper tools, fix it at the pump, toss some kitty litter on the spill, filler her up again, hit the go button. Ok maybe if the plug wires were to fall off while I was driving. I might not make it.... hmm, nope. There are no excuses. Your only hurting yourself here. And besides if your not there this year ... will send Raz to your house ... for the weekend! Nuff said.

John, if your just looking for more excitement this year. Bolt on a Holset and see what happens. Or if its track time you crave lets make a trip to Washington after the meet.

See you there..

WORD!

I'm definitely not bringing the fastest car this year... I'm just going to have an even more capable handling and braking one, with nice cold AC, and maybe tinted windows for the trip. We'll see if I get to the tinted windows by that point. I should also have an actual stereo in there as well instead of a stock tape deck. Might have a different exhaust(well, I already have a STOCK one back on so I could pass emissions), and I just swapped in a lesser cam(A, the V15's on ebay, see my sig), but added a K&N, lol. Performance should be about the same in a straight line as it was last year if I get a decent exhaust tossed on it.

Athal, if my 240 can keep up(somewhat enough anyway) on the straights, so can Dale's 122. It should be quicker than my 244, by a decent chunk. I don't think Dale was getting on it in a straight line much(were you?). Car should be capable of somewhere in the mid-low 16second range in a 1/4 mile, if the engine's in good shape. Should be capable of somewhere between 110 and 120whp as it was, and it's only toting around a 122... I have less whp than that and much more weight.

It's a good thing you're cute, Athal. Ian's the guy organizing this, not Dale.

As far as the 122 goes, the jury's out on that one. I don't think Dale's got too many plans for it this year, just to enjoy it. It MAY get a rebuilt head, but aside from the puffing during decel it's not necessary. He's got a rumpity-rump cam for it too, but I'm trying to get him to hold off on that until he verifies the condition of the bottom end.

Toss some thicker oil in it(if you're not already using the nice and juicy 20-50) to try and tame the decel business. And just bring oil along to take care of what you do use. My 142's been like that on both engines that it's had in the past 4 years... It might be getting a rebuilt/grooved/mildly cleaned up head in the next year though to complement a the replacement of a C cam with a worn exhaust lobe to a D(I think) cam. On top of the noisy bottom end that could go in any minute... Yes, 20-50 will by my friend.

You've changed the tranny oil yet? If not, throw 2.4 quarts of Redline MTL in there with a new OD cover gasket (Volvo p/n 3502464)... Should help lengthen the life of the gearbox a few more months or so. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you pull the tranny and discover that your release fork is about to snap. Had the same crunchiness in my old '82 242Ti. When I parted that car out, I discovered that the release fork had snapped off the pivot. So, I suspect that the tranny was fine. Parted the car due to a couple rear-end wrecks. Floors were rust free, as was most of the body.

I don't think I ever want to be right at the front, I would end up off the side of a mountain! But Athal you prove to be one of the quickest leaders .

The 242 might be N/A until about 4000 RPM this year, after that point it might be blowing head gaskets . This all depends if my (non existent) MS skillz are up the task, otherwise my setup might be less extreme.

Ah, okay...

Heheh, slow would be my car in its current state of tune. My dad's '84 GL gets up and goes better. Gotta replace the injector seals and then readjust the mixture to spec. Then, I can consider raising the boost. Currently am producing about 4-5 psi. Car runs nicely above 3500 rpm in boost, but below that, fuhgeddaboudit.

I'm iffy due to some tentative business.. Despite having two cars, one of which runs pretty reliably lately. Oh well, it'll be a fun meet I'm sure.
If I make it the choice will be between slow in a straight line non-A/C N/A or quickish in a straight line, slow around corners and air conditioned.

150hp and 200ft lbs

I'm having trouble getting back up to that level, though. But currently I have it tuned nicely at 10psi and running on 87 without problems.

*on a side note though, I've decided that i'm going the student loan route and financing for my tools and stuff next year. I might be able to get some progress on the engine this summer.

I know it is early, but remember this event takes place in the height of the summer season in a very popular area. Although we will do EVERYTHING" we can to find room, I would still recommend that you make reservations to guarantee a spot.

So my car keeps breaking...first its the throttle cable, then a spark plug goes out of the cylinder on #4 so I replace the head, now the shift linkage decides its time to go.

This car is really really testing my patience...I almost bought a bmw this week and the option isn't gone yet.

the blue car is in a storage state, its too gross here to get the garage from the parents so its at a friends until then.

Black car is running, I have a nice stutttttttttter at 5k and up, so either the coil is going going gone or the ignition control module is getting lazy. I dont have a spare ignition control module but I have another coil which i'll test pretty soon here once I make a new bracket for it.

Hows this one for size. Hit the gas, turbo is spooling and boost gauge reads....0 and the car is slow. No intake leaks, and the car is showing normal vacuum.

I have a theory but i'm not sure about it yet.

The Aspirator
04-20-2007, 02:49 PM
Sounds like either you popped an intake hose that you're not seeing (or blew the intercooler?) or that you're running silly lean, though that would still make boost... just no power.

245GT-Turbo
04-21-2007, 12:09 AM
'nuther possibility... Partially plugged cat. Plugged enough that the car will run and drive fine in B21F mode, but won't produce bewst. When the car's cold, remove the plug at the top of the downpipe. Take the car for a test drive and see if it produces normal power. If it does, either cut it open, gut it, and weld it back together, or cut out the cat and put a piece of pipe in its place. If you don't have a cat, I'd begin looking for the usual vacuum leaks and check the mixture.

-J

edicius
04-25-2007, 02:56 AM
I took the ignition control module off and apart to check it for signs of failure, none there so I cleaned the ground plate all up and it runs fine now.

Still no boost. I changed the intercooler because I noticed mine was crunched on the top, still no boost. I have gone over every single vacuum line and intake hose with the clamps, I'll smoke test it tomorrow and see if something funky is up.

The exhaust is definately no where near stock too, no cats to clog. I'll take the Dp off tomorrow and see if I broke the centershaft. There have been some very strange noises from the area for a couple months, driving in 4th, 100-120km/hr, on the throttle a little bit (enough to start it spooling) and there was a horrible whine, sounded like a brake wear indicator, off the throttle, on the brake and it goes away. I really think its the turbo on this one, i'll give it a good look around tomorrow.

klr142
04-25-2007, 03:10 AM
Definitely sounds like you ate the turbo... You should've looked into it sooner judging by the description of the sounds. Much sooner. Would be a shame if you consumed metal shavings from your turbo into your engine. Worst case scenario, but it's probably possible...

edicius
04-25-2007, 03:18 AM
Its no big deal really, When I swapped the head a couple weeks ago I found no evidence of abrasive wear from metal chunks from the turbo, or from the spark plug that exploded a year ago on #4. Btw the 405 head and cometic .30 thou headgasket are working well and sealing properly.

I've checked that turbo a bunch of times and it always seemed fine but I have a feeling that a bearing might have seized on it and thats why it bit it.
I have a couple turbos to pick from though, a .63/.42, a .48/.42 or I might be able to get a saab td04hl-15t so that would work well with the 90+ manifold. I think the .42/.48 is going in tomorrow and if I dont like it i'll switch.

We would love to have you come back.
You really need to come during the summer when we all have our "real" cars on the road :-P

I'm freaking debating it. That'd be a bitchin' time. I'm sure someone would have room in their car or whatever if I did ever so decide to come.

If having enough room for you to ride as a passenger is all you're concerned about, you're in! :) I'll have room, and so will pretty much everyone else. :)

Yes I know there will be room, you could fly into Calgary, onto Oregon and hook up with someone there, or Vancouver. Check to see what flights are cheapest and just make sure someone there is expecting you. It would be great if you could join us

sorry....the back seat doesn't go back in this car. I'm still undecided which car I want to use for the trip.

Alright, I'm officially in! Now I just gotta figure out which car I wanna drive... Slowish 71' 145 or possibly a new to me 79' 242 GT. What do you guys think?

Which corners better?

Well, the 242 has IPD "lowering" springs, and IPD sways, bigger rims with wider tires, I would say the 242... The 145 only has the 27mm front sway and is lowered quite a bit. But I haven't bought the 242 yet, I'm hoping though! :-P

Bring the most reliable, trustworthy hooptie you can get ahold of. Even if you're peeling your eyeballs off the windows, it puts a bit of a damper on it if you're checking for nasty sounds all the time and worrying about your clapped out contraption.

I blame your passenger side seat cover for that one. As well as for all the nasty sounds.

Hahaha! Fair enough....she was a little bit useless on the trip ill admit. This year a good buddy of mine is coming with me, at least he'll let me listen to whatever I want on my radio.
