Well, it looks like I'll be flying down to San Luis Obispo in a few weeks to pick up a 142. I tentatively plan on flying down on Thursday March 8th and driving back to Portland the next day. I'll probably break the drive into 2 days. What is going to be the fastest route back? 101 north to the Bay Area and then cut over to I-5 or east from S.L.O. to I-5, thus avoiding Bay Area traffic? I also wouldn't mind having a few names and numbers of TB'rs on the route home just in case something goes wrong...

I'm along the way, I'm about 20-30 minutes west of the 101.

46 - I5 is fastest, but IMO staying toward the coast is nicer if you have the time.
HWY 1 is especialy nice this time of year as there arent RVs doing 15 MPH with 101 cars stuck behind em. check the www.CHP.gov to be sure it isn't closed for a slide though.

It's almost certainly faster to take I-5 for as long as you can. 1 and 101 are beautiful, but almost certainly closed in some spots (in Marin, for instance). Similarly, I would much rather go from 101 in the bay area to 80 to 5 in Sacto than I would from 1/101 to 5 near the Oregon/California border. The mountain passage in less than perfect weather sucks ass.

Making good tome is most importan. I'm thinking that a scenic route in a 38 year old car that I've never been in before isn't a wise idea. I need to make good time and stay in cell phone range at all times! I've driven Hwy 1 before and it is beautiful, but not a good plan for me this time.

I'd take 101 from SLO up; then at Watsonville you can cut across to I-5 (via HWY 152).

But it depends on which day you're driving. Friday traffic on any of the 80s (280, 580, 680, 80) will make you want to KILL...

I will probably be leaving SLO Friday morning around 5:00 A.M. I may drive north for a few hours Thursday evening though, just to shave a little time off the friday drive.

Avoid the bay area, it isn't that pretty anyways. Wastonville is as far north on 101 as I'd go (and frankly, north of SLO 101 isn't even pretty anyways).

I5 will put you about 15 minutes from Theresa and I. The 9th is when escrow closes though so we will probably be very busy :(

IMO 280 from San Jose to San Francisco isn't too bad at all. Plus, if you swing buy the Bay Area you could even buy my 140 sway bar :-D :-D

I'm having a meet/BBQ at my house that Saturday if you want to stick around another day Ethan.

Thank you for the offer but I have a very pregnant, cranky wife who isn't amused by the fact that I'm flying to California to pick up a car that is older than we are. I'd best not lolligag on the way home. But if it breaks down near you, I'm down for a burger!

I'm half way up the Peninsula in the Bay Area along with a few others, so if you are going to be in the area for any extended period, or need help, hit me up. I'll see what we can do, or at the very least, direct you to the nearest pick-n-pull ;-)

As for commuting, 280 isn't bad at all. Avoid that stretch of 101 like the plauge though if you are trying to make time. In fact, after 280 gets to SF, it kinda all turns to ****... so yeah, it would probably be best to avoid it.

Avoid the bay area at all cost.

Someone said 46 to I-5, that is the best way back.

That, and 101 is a much easier place to get speeding tickets (somebody mentioned King City... guess where I've gotten pulled over?)

If you want, I'm in Sac as well, and work in EG, about 10 minutes from I5. I5 is by far a lot faster than 1/101. Found that out on the drive TO Seattle, since we came back the 101 route last summer. Traffic in the bay area is a pain.

If you want a number shoot me a PM. Maybe if you're late enough getting to Sac I can give you a look thru my parts bin (not much mind you) for stuff for your new toy. :)

You should jump over to I-5 if you are trying to get home quick. Either 152 or 46 over to I-5 would be your best bet. I'm in San Jose, so you'll probably miss me on your way back. Got pics of your new 142??

That would be Gilroy not Watsonvillle, and not a bad way to go.

I'm in Sacto as well Ethan, closest to hwy 50 but also close to 80, 99, and I5. PM me for my cell number. PnP is right near by as is VolvoSaab, not to mention the surplus of parts floating around amongst us Sacto TB'ers. If you breakdown near any of us we'll make sure you get up and going again in no time. :)

I dunno if krg1971, crandandall, or Steve O have seen this thread yet but I'm sure their offer is extended as well.

King City is beautiful!

I usually stop there on my way north just to pee on it. Ok, so I use a bathroom, but I like thinking about it the other way.

Oh, and there are a few of us TB'ers in SLO so if you need any help, tools, supplies, etc. for the trip just shoot one of us a PM.

So I'm finally getting around to this. It will be happening the end of next week. I'm driving down with the wife and kids. They'll follow me back up. I'll have AAA in case the need for towing arises. We plan on making a 3-4 day trip out of it.

Oh, and you can buy my wheels, since they wifey will be there to see them and approve.... :-P
pm me if you want a cel number or 3 for the Sac area.

Yah. What he said. Between us all we could find someplace to put you (and family) up too if you need it or want to save on hotels.
