Ok guys, its time to get our shiat together nice and early. You will NOT want to miss this meet, this will be a first all day thing for the NC Cr3w. Plan to to head out to Umstead as usual but around 2 p.m. nothing new. We will hang out like always grab a bite to eat have a good time and what not...THEN when it would mostly be over its time to go tear it up at the drag strip. Its $10.00 to get in and $10.00 to race. Gates open at 7 p.m. and we should get there early to get in as many races before it gets crowded and time to show up some rice burners ;-) .

EDIT:heres the address for those of you that want to mapquest

Nvm, Can't make it

I am seriously going to try to make it. Don't mark me down just yet, I have to run it by my parents. This meet should be easy enough to get too. Total Est. Distance: 133.49 miles from Newport to Fayetteville. :)

I've never drag raced before and I have a few questions:
1. Will they pair ol' blue up with another slow car or will they let her get toasted?
2. Do I need a helmet or other safety equipment?
3. What are there views on weight reduction... For example, say I tear out all my panels and carpet, etc? (I'm considering this)
4. Can I run my normal tires? Can i borrow yours?
5. Is race fuel necessary? Will it improve N/A performance?

Please tell me more people are going to show up!?!?

The car is in my Dads name. I pay for insurance and I pay for gas, But I would also have to pay to have it towed 130 miles home if I completely $#@! it up. Which was a good point they brought up. Oh, and I owe them about half a grand in legal fees from the last time I decided to have "fun" with my car...

Besides, I could realy use a turbo or a 50 shot of NAWWZZZZZZ before I drag race.

Yeah 130 miles is alot to drive to drag given there is the chance of something going wrong. Being that you are N/A I doubt if you have much to worry about... ANyway to answer your questions (as best I can)

1. It's whoever is there... At Rockingham they have about 8 lanes and they had them split up based on the class of the car and/or what it was running. Like Unlimited cars had lanes 1 and 2, street cars had 7 and 8... u get the idea. I made 3 runs that night, one was against a crappy stock'ish civic (beat him), one against a mustang (he was 1 sec faster), and one against a crappy cavalier (stomped him). If you are wanting to race a particular person you can line up next to them.

2. I'm not sure about Fayetteville but I can ask the guys I work with, I think for your car you just need a helmet (it's not going to be running 10's or anything so.....).

3. We're you going to tear out the interior anyways or are you going to jsut do this for the track? It's really not going to make tons of difference, unless you were going to do it anyways. That's just alot of work to maybe snag a few tenths when the poor N/A is prolly gonna run a blistering 18 second time anyway. I wouldn't.

4. Again, N/A, not giong to matter... Plenty of cars with well over 300hp running street tires just fine, you can dead hook on the street with your tires I'm sure... Plus there will be VHT (a sticky substance on the track) laid down anyway. My 245+T making 160rwhp/200rwtq through an AW71 tranny could build up ~6psi on the line and launch without even a chirp.

5. Some may argue that it will... It's not gonna do jack. The car was tuned from the factory to run standard gas. If you normally run 87 octane and you want to feel special than through some 89 or 93 in just in case there might be a bit of ignition detonation or if you are going to bump the timing a couple of degrees. Past that cars that we tune at the shop (we are a GM only shop, www.carolinaautomasters.com) will usually lose HP by throwing in race gas into a car that has been tuned for 93 octane.

Hope this helps.. I'm not sure if I'll be there or not, I likely won't have a car I want to run but I might come to hang out and make fun of people.

Thanks for the answers.

I'll race some other day. My plan is to use the NA as my tow vehicle (spelling?) and get a realy cheap turbo with a trashed interior and craptastic body and race it. Can you say "Trailer Trash"?

fredsanford740t

Yep, it runs... I bought it with a blown head gasket and lots of problems... This gives the saying "polishing a turd a whole new meaning: has new 2.5 inch Magnaflow highflow cat, custom (experimental) dual outlet exhaust that exits under the rear doors, new MAF, new o2 sensor, new fuel filter, all fluids flushed or drained and filled 3k ago, new oil trap, new front & rear main seals, new cam seals, new distributor seals, new oil housing seal, new oil pan seal, new front and rear case seals. new head gasket and reworked head, thermostat, timing belt, custom intake tubes with oil catch can, Saab blow off valve, cone filter, ported and polished stock turbo and pre 90 manifold, new plugs, semi-new cap and rotor, new intake manifold gasket, has 159k on the odo...

Downside: The engine is experiencing some pretty bad blow by... I think it is due to a badly leaking injector thinning out the oil. Gets about 150 miles out of a tank of gas. Hesitates in high boost near 4k rpm. This is why the fuel filter, cat converter, dizzy cap rotor an plugs were replaced. There might be a leak in the boots lines... I haven't taken the time to diagnose. Oil smells heavy of fuel. In-turn the oil is filling the catch can pretty quickly. I'll do a compression test today at lunch and let you know the results. It also needs a drive-shaft carrier bearing and bushing, needs brakes, needs lower balljoints, The wheels are all bent (vibration is not very noticeable), removed receiver dryer (no a/c) Slightly leaking exhaust off of turbo (it's hard as hell to seal that up. I'll get it done today or tomorrow.) There are some idosyncracies that I know I'm forgetting. I'll go over them if you decided to come out and look a the car. I'm just tired of messing with it. It's taken me almost 2 years to get it in as good a shape. I have my 93 945, so the 744 is no longer a project for me.

If you are going to be modding it I doubt that you'll want to keep the pre 90 engine in it any how. Just let me know what you think. I'll take some pics of the interior and the engine bay today.Does it run?

I'm interested

At most/all tracks, if your car runs a 13.99 or quicker you have to wear a helmet. So if youre gonna be there and think your car is gonna run 13.99 or quicker, bring a helmet.

2pm on friday??? I'll still be at work until 5:30pm... It will take me an hour and 40 minutes (so says mapquest) to get there... That means it will really take 3 hours to get there in rush hour traffic on I-40... I would not be able to get there until like 9pm. Then I would have to drive back to Chapel Hill...

Think that you can just drop the seats off at my work, Delfosse?
