Alright,
1. does anybody have airline hookups? PM me please.
2. Kenny is coming to PDX courtesy of myself. He'll be here from about 11PM april 6th to 11AM april 8th.
He's going to be dyno tuning my car.
The plan is to dyno tune early April 7th (saturday) in the morning. Afterwards I say we have a party. R Sport International is a possible place.
This is what I need:
Who is interested in spending the entire weekend with kenny/me/shane/whomever? The plan is to camp at my place the night of the 6th (bring your sleeping bag/blankets), dyno tune morning of the 7th, party hard, crash wherever is best, and see kenny off.
so lets get this going - i've got my hands full planning my dyno tune/getting kenny here, so i need people steppin up to the plate to make fun things happen
thanks,
seth

not trying to rain on the parade but why do you need kenny to come dyno tune your car? asside from the obvious answer of you doing it yourself (which it seems you have ruled out) there isnt anyone closer then 3k miles that can tune your car?

simple
kenny is most efficient in tuning redblocks. its been seen.
for some honkey at a random dyno shop, not familiar with a volvo, but familiar with megasquirt can do 300WHP on a stock redblock in probably 6 hours (look at brians 242, he was on the dyno for like 7 hours... and those guys knew megasquirt well).
now, its 150 bucks for a dyno shop here near me to dyno tune (thats hourly). times that by 6. you get 900 bucks.
spend 404 bucks to fly kenny out here, and spend another 85/hr for a dyno... i could have kenny on the dyno for 6 hours and still be just about the same price as having some dude who doesnt know volvos tune.
another thing to consider, when youre tryin to do what i'm doing (basically what Sam / deathwagon did on his wagon [306WHP]), the chances of breaking things are way high. Kenny knows so much about our motors its not even funny. not to mention he can tune 3x as fast as anybody i've seen.
so you tell me why you wouldnt spend the same amount of money, or even probably LESS, to have a fellow bricker from S.E. come up and meet some PDXers. i'd much rather pay that much money to have kenny come up and all of us have a blast.
ya dig?
Kenny has proven himself over and over with results so yeah, I don't think you are wasting money if you can't or don't have the time to learn to do it yourself. Tom Wong is in your area and is one of the best tuners in the PacNW though, have you heard of him?

Seth, there should be other dynos that you can rent out for less than $150/hr, keep looking. Unnatural Inc., Torquefreaks... Probably other places.

03-16-2007, 12:16 AM
kyle,
its 150 hr for someone to tune it... its nothing cheaper than that.
we'll be going to torque freaks for 85/hr just rentin the dyno. no person tuning (that'll be kenny)

derrick is his name in reality, not sure if its spelled right or not.
i could give you a few suggestions for local tuners, but it doesnt seem like your interested in that. i know a guy that was getting 220-250 WHP out of a stock* wrx (220 CRANK HP stock)
and thats on a AWD platform.
*he was upping the boost with a huge exhaust and intake. Runinng a standalone, but everything else was stock.

I see you didn't put me up there for being "in". Are you kidding?! Of course I'm in! :-P
That being said, here's the deal, no? Play on the dyno Saturday morning. After the fun dyno session, we go to the V Shop courtesy of Peter, have some BBQ grubbing and **** shootin, and what not.
Is Peter supplying the BBQ itself? Or will that need to be brought over? I have a 6 pack of Coronas I can donate to the gathering because I'll never drink them... And then I can bring some chips and maybe some drink too, although I'll be drinking water for the most part. I can bring some ketchup and mustard too, if wanted. :-P
Post on OVT as well, confirm with Peter, and things'll start taking off. Don't need to worry about bringing things just yet, we should be able to get someone to take care of one thing each or so and it'll be dandy. Just gotta have a date so everyone can start planning specifics. You better call Torque Freaks TOMORROW and get stuff set in motion. Got it? :-P
Yea, Right
03-18-2007, 10:10 PM
I will supply the location, the condiments, an icechest with ice, (an 18 pack for starters) and the BBQ. Everything else can be found at my friend Fred's across the street. :)

ohh one more thing about my car that night on that hp level.. This power was tuned for the dyno only as soon as we hit the street at 22-24psi of boost the car pinged pretty hard soo dont expect that the car to run that kind of boost on pump gas on the street for prolonged periods of time.. While playing with it yesterday, we were getting some chipper/chatter whatever it is(surge?) after revving it up somewhat high, full throttle, and then letting off. Sound about right?
His engine seems excessively loud to me, so I didn't want to rev it up too high. Some of it's coming from his alternator(seth, toss another one in, after spinning it by hand to see what kind of sounds it makes).

How does it run right now? Not the tune, but the cars general run-ability? When you jump on the dyno make SURE that you've got at least one set of brand new plugs with you, bring an extra set of plug wires if yours are crap, make sure your cap and rotor is new-ish, etc. Basically you don't want to be wasting your time hunting down gremlins while paying for dyno time. Make sure everything is as reliable and strong as it can be.
Best of luck, I hope you accomplish your goals. SUCKS that I can't make it down.

Seth, before you rev it up or drive it, make sure you run it for a good few minutes to get the turbo re-oiled... You did pre-lube it before you put the lines back in, right?

Alright a couple of things, my flight gets back in on Saturday around 11:30AM so it looks like I can make it to the BBQ and drags which is awesome. I guess I will run my 242 and try to be easier on it than last time and not spin through second gear. Secondly, speaking of cap and rotor they are old and I attempted to clean them up so they definitely need to be swapped with brand new ones ASAP. When putting the new rotor on make sure it goes on the same exact position you pulled it off so timing doesn't get all goofy. Trying to think of other things to be concerned about regarding the car... Had a few electrical smokings / almost fires which was rear defroster wiring and illumination wiring related so that will be something to have fun with in the near future. Everything is safely electrical taped up and shoved out of the way for now!

screw running it for a few minutes, unplug the coil-to-dizzy wire and crank it for 30 seconds. you want oil in the turbo before the exhaust hits the turbine.

Well, assuming where the grocery getter is your house.Yeah, that's my garage it was sitting in front of. I'll be riding the motorcycle around for the most part, and maybe bring the 142 to the drags, maybe not though as it costs money and I'm trying to sell it. I have more traction than last time I went out, so I'm somewhat worried about hurting things, not to mention a tired engine. If I was keeping the car, I would've give a crap, but it will likely be driving 550 miles down to california in the next month or so...
That being said, I'll be at the dyno in the morning, so I won't actually be that close to eh V Shop.

How's the tuning session going?
Slobodan
04-07-2007, 08:35 PM
I was there, now I'm at work... :(
Went ok... we had problems with the boost pipes blowing off at around 15+ psi because Seth didn't flare the ends of his pipes to get a better hold and they were using a flat head screw driver to tighten the clamps instead of using a 8mm socket like I showed them today.
Then the wastegate wasn't preloaded enough so boost was up and down alot... so I had to rush and fix that with a broiling hot manifold burning my fleshy hands. By that time I had to leave to make it to the Beaverton area for work. :(
I guess the final numbers were 259?RWHP and 266RWTQ on a mustang dyno. with about 18psi. Further tuning can happen later when I have time to change cams/cam timming, and put more load on the wastegate.

Actually, I just woke up, I went to bed "early" last night after the drags(to which NO turbo volvos came, except for Andy in his red S70T5M from OVT) around 1am. Seth, Kenny, and others were partying it up at Eric's house.
Now it's time for easter! I'll get some camera phone junk loaded up into a gallery in OVT probably tonight. I'll need everyone else's pictures/movies to load into there.

I was going to hit the drags with you guys, but I can't even get full throttle right now. Did ethan run? Did you Kyle?
klr142
04-08-2007, 06:42 PM
For the some NA guys, yeah. Me, Shane in his yellow 244dl, Sean(dirtdogg) in his 242GT, and Ethan raced his new 142 for two runs. Well, actually there was another OVT'er there, Ducttape, who I didn't know was going to be there and he was running too. My 244 did 12 or 13 runs I think? And that was WITH staying off the track for almost an hour for some pictures... There was NO one there after the diesel trucks and subaru guys left, it was awesome. Closed at 11 even!:)
