Well I'll start this build project thread with my new camera. Just got it a few days ago and its a canon powershot sd1000 and its so much better.

Heres an background on the car. Got it around september last year. In december the engine seized. That sucked. Now I'm rebuilding the engine with a few modifications.

3/29/07.
Heres where the car sits today. Ive ripped out a few things off the engine to prepare for the teardown. I dont have much time always so it goes in random stages. Here's the pics.

WHATEVER YOU DO STOP!

Get a gallon of WD40 and fill those cylinders up with it before you dare rotate this thing over any more. Let it soak in overnight atleast.

Your cam cover you can throw away, when its cracked like that it becomes junk. Try to find another one and bolt it down (sans) cams and make sure everything lines up reasonably well. I have a swapped cover with out issue on mine but YMMV.

The thing your wondering about is the piston oil squirters. Soak em down in WD (so they will break loose) then pull em before you pull the pistons.

Soak with Kano Kroil penetrating lubricant then set impact to highest setting and have at it. SHOULD come off, never had one not come off w/ that combo.;-) The axle spline may require some "persuasion (http://www.bartcop.com/jpg/012ham.jpg)" to get out from the hub as well.

it took me (after breaking two 1/2" breaker bars, gotta love craftsman...) a 3/4" breaker bar and about 5' of square tubing to break one side off (driver's). passengers side was just many attempts w/ the afford mentioned 1/2" breaker bar.

better question might be what did not go wrong

bearing cap maybe coming off allowing the piston/rod to spin in the bore, bent rod hitting the crank could of caused a vibration that made the bearing cap/bolts come lose. maybe metal shavings in oil pump causing lack of oil to places

just FYI, see the part of the dash to the right next to the middle vents which is bending out to the pass side you might want to fix that, there is a tab on that part of the dash that slides into the console a lot of people miss that when removing the dash (including my self when i did the the first time). If you don't put it back it will be permanently bent out like that

Well turns out the guy at the dealership has been on the phone with Volvo for hours getting this sorted out. Apparently there's been an update on the specs and there's new parts numbers for the pistons and rings because they changed the specs on the top rings. So I'm getting a brand new set of rings sent straight from Sweden and they'll be here next week. So now there's new part numbers for these cars and Volvo is updating their inventory. And I'm getting the first set of these rings in America. So maybe someday my car will run.

out of curiosity, you mentioned you did not have windows cut in between the segments in the block.

i figured the t5 would have these windows, as the t6 did.
but it seems that some of the changes occurred at different times on these motors, so i was curious about the intake and exhaust ports for comparison.
your cc's look just like mine, but did this t5 come with the enlarged intake ports but tiny exhaust ports (with the bumps)?
i found the exhaust needed a ton of work, as it looks you've done some of the same work i figured i'd ask.

ah! and it looks like you got the new type of crank too...

the block and most of the components are from a 96 block i believe.

As far as the head work goes i thought all the heads were the same other than like 93. but yeah on the exhaust they're smaller with the little bumps

And the work i had done on the head was:

valve job port and polish
releive pocket areas and blend short turn radius up to valve seats
back cut valves 2 angles
3 angle cut on valve seats

and this is off the quote sheet from my machine shop

nice, yeah i was wondering about the intake side because in addition to the bumps the later 6-cyl heads came with bigger intake ports and an entirely different intake flange, i assume they did the same with the 5's but i don't really know.

good stuff on the head work, i had similar work done, although the only port work i had done was on the exhaust side, where it REALLY needed it. (in a big way)

I don't know too much about the t6 engines but I had both sides ported out and the intake manifold ported with the bigger throttle body. Im still using the stock turbo and exhaust manifold but much later im planning on putting the "R" manifold and a bigger turbo as well.
