I've never paid more than $500 for any of my 20 or so Volvos through the years! These are the three I still have:
'81 244 $400 13 years ago.
http://media.socialurl.com/photo/65/65/223/6057_large.jpg
'90 744 Ti $free (I had to buy the wheels and tires though if I wanted them $500)
http://media.socialurl.com/photo/65/65/229/6148_large.jpg
'90 244 Ti $400 bought it wrecked and pieced it back together. Had the parts in the right color so it cost me nothing to fix it.
http://media.socialurl.com/photo/65/65/222/6039_large.jpg
I got a 740GLE today for $0 and she runs like a champion. Just gotta fix her ass and her moss coat...

The GT was free, I had a couple of turbo 244s that i bought for $100 a piece, never thought to take pictures of those battle hardened beasts.

I bought my first 245 for $1 and got 2 years out of it The odometer had broken @428k several years before I bought it. All I put into was about $300 bucks for service and a set of snow tires. We think it had about 550k+ when it finally died, maybe more. It was remarkebly solid, especially for a New England car. I still miss it. I scrapped it after she spewed all her oil out in Portsmouth, but I swear I've seen her still on the road in mass.

Hey,
how do you guys get these free cars any way?
I understand the blown turbo thing.......but really ....free?
I mean , are you going to see cars for 700 bucks, and saying"hey, I will take this thing now......take it outta your yard for no charge!"
and, how much were people asking, and what did you offer.....are you guys walking around with 300 bucks, going and seeing every volvo in CL on a satruday, and bringing it home after beating the guy up on his asking price of 6-800?
just interested in how you guys bargain for your cars.....
Mine was 500, asking 500, ....he handed me a folder of about 6000 worth of recipts.......not performance stuff, he was just dumb and could fix things.......so new turbo for 1500 ....stuff like that ....I wish the ding dong had purchased new shocks along the way!!!
and....dont part that 242ti....even I know that !!@!!!!!

Well before I had me license I was riding my bike around town and stumbled upon the 83 244tic. It was sitting outside of a tire place. The guy was working on a Olds right next to it and I said "who owns this Volvo" he said "I do". Then I asked if it was forsale he said "$200cash". Told him I will see what I can do. Came back the next day and bought it. Drove it the 2miles home. Ran like crap. It sat around for a year and got piddled with and then I got the 84 244GL.

Was on TB and saw the 84 244gl when it was 1st forsale. HERE (http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=73460). It was about an hour drive. I really wanted it but couldn't afford the asking price at the time. Waited 2months and then offered him $190. He said ok but he is goign to take the CD player out. That was fine with me. He put a old tape deck in for us for the drive home. Went down there bought it and drove it back home. Used parts from the 83 244tic and a 78/9 242GT to transform it to what it is now.

The 80 242DL was on ebay at $100 so I started watching it. Waited till 10sec left and it was at $120. I then dropped down a $239 bid. Won it for $200 even. Car had no title and is in WI. The guy delivered the car to my grandparents house in WI after I sent him a USPS money order. Now the car has been sitting in a garage for the past year this June.

Now the 76 245DL was also bought on ebay. Sort of. I was watching some parts on ebay from one seller. Flathood grille, lights, corner lights, fog lamps. He said in his description he was parting out a old wagon. I emailed him about the wagon and asked for some detail. Many emails later and a couple days dad and I took a 2 hour drive in the truck with and empty trailer. Paid $250 cash for it and hauled it back home.
I guess you have to be in the right spot at the right time or you have to ask the right questions at the right time..

Also forgot about the 78/9 242GT (http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l194/volvhoe/1979%20Volvo%20242GT/) that we parted out. Was on ebay and saw the 242GT. It was a flood car no title no keys listed for $500. Emailed the guy many times about it. The car never sold. He was just goign to crush the GT then. I asked him if he would trade for a 87 Chevy conversion van. He said "ok". Drove an hour pulling the van with an ford excursion. Came back with the 242GT and began to save parts from it.

Just drove this one home 500 miles. It was free with a blown headgasket. A junkyard head, radiator and misc stuff, Elring gasket kit, oil, filter and antifreeze ran me about $325.
This one is #22. I think nineteen of them are <$1000 cars.

$200. The guy thought the transmission was bad. Too bad he didn't know about kickdown cables

'85 745 Ti, stock and not running, thought it was just the timing belt but was apparently more than that. Ran into some issues with space and had to sell it.
By far the best deal was the '79 242. Just buying the suspension upgrades alone would have run me more than what I paid, even if I got deals on USED stuff. I love that car.

Good Volvo deals are not impossible to find. I currently have a $50.00 89 245, a $200 84 760 turbo, and a 90 740 GL that I was robbed and paid the unheard of price of $250...so 500 for all three. How do you get 'em for cheap?? Well, the 50.00 wagon was bought from a neighbor as he was moving...he's a stoner ...nuff said. The 84 turbo? Owner had the alternator wire connected to the oil sender terminal. Had the world's largest carbon build up...oil light was on and the engine was knocking...we all thought the motor was blown!

I got mine for $150. Some person backed into it on the street and totalled it, all it needed was a fender and corner light. I guess the guys ( who owned the vo) insurance company did not want to fix it. The guy got like $2000 for the car being totalled, then he sold the car to me for $150. I drove the car 25 miles to my house then put on a new fender and light and have been rockin it ever since, 2 years ago

Had a few of them over the years, starting with the '67 122s, recieved as a h.s. graduation present back in '71. I can't find any pics of it, even though it was in our family for at least 10years as it was passed on between my brothers and sister.
I also can't find any pics of the 142s that I bought from my brother. It was the worst of all the Volvos I have owned, but in it's defense, it had been driven by 4 teenagers before I got it...no offense to those of you who are still teenagers, but you can be hard on cars...I know I was ;-)
My bro's 122. This car, in the hands of the woman who built it, suprised many a driver on Mulholland Drive back in the day. Ipd springs, bars, cam, Momo wheel, new T/As and other assorted goodies. $500.00

but bought this in November '05 for $700, in los angeles. probably could have found one cheaper, but i was tired of looking... and something about this one called out to me.
148k miles, dealer maintained, had been for sale for $3k... then the lady bumped into a truck and broke the headlights and grill... dropped the price to $1500... i offered $700 and she said OK...
in hindsight, i should have offered $500.
mechanically it was near perfect, but it needed tires (two of them blew on the way home)... cosmetically it had a broken headlight and grill, and the headliner was trash, but otherwise beautiful.
me playing around on gravel roads took care of the cosmetics... has a few dings now, some scratches...
apparently i don't have any before pics...
this is part way through a 960/S90/S70 front conversion... how it sits today... and where it's staying until i find the rest of the parts AND stop being lazy...

D*mn son, how do you find those deals? Nothing under $2-3k for a running car with less than 200 or 300k on the clock. Anyone in southern ontario or thereabouts mind hooking me up with a cheap/work needed 7/9 series? Either I've just got bad luck with finding any, or look in all the wrong places *sigh* *finally surrenders to craigslist*

turbo16psi, holy $*!# Nice! I just remembered that I bought a '92 944 GLE for $200 CDN a little over a year ago. I think it had valve issues (16-valve), but I couldn't get the title, so I ended up parting it :-( I found it sitting on it's belly (wheels had been sent for scrap!) while I was walking through a local junkyard. Other then the engine issue and some minor rust, it wasn't in bad shape for ~360K km. I don't have any pics of it though. It was gray with gray leather.

$250, '90 LH3.1 M47 with 145k. Bought it with a dead ecu, no taillights, no exhaust, and the headlights were in pieces. Total investment including purchase price, repairs, upgrades, and registration so far is about $700.

'81 242DL - my first car... $200.00. M46, worn out wiring harness, bad alternator, and a partially dead instrument cluster. 230K when purchased. Received a B23E in 1999, then was parked in 2000, eventually to be retired from active duty in mid-'01. Sold for $150.
http://home.blarg.net/~volvo242gt/242GL.jpg
'82 242 Turbo - second car. $250.00. M46, harness issues, threading tap stuck in upper #3 exhaust stud hole, front end body damage. Rustier than the '81, but less beige, and no roof dents. Bushings were shot, and driveshaft needed serious rebuilding. OD unit was dying, too. Totalled in late 2002. Got $1850 for it, but still wish I had it, in some respects...
(in its limelight)
http://home.blarg.net/~volvo242gt/242GTright.jpg
(aftermath - still was fully driveable - ugly as sin, tho)
http://home.blarg.net/~volvo242gt/242damage.jpg
'83 245Ti - current driver. Purchased by family for $700 from a friend. Had a B21FT and an Aw71. Still has a B21FT (not the same engine), but has a M46. Was gifted to me while my black '82 242Ti was down.
(Earlier pic, showing both the silver 242 and the 245Ti)
http://home.blarg.net/~volvo242gt/242245.jpg
'84 245GL - father's wagon. Purchased this one for him back in January. Paid $300. Needed some work. Still needs a little TLC before it's truly happy.
http://home.blarg.net/~volvo242gt/newhood.jpg
'80 264GL B21F car - picked this up from a buddy for free. Donated its leather steering wheel to my silver '82 242, then was traded for a '72 142E. No pix, sorry.
Also have owned a few 100 series cars, all of which were either free, or very cheap.

ive never paid more than 400$ for a volvo and ive owned a lot of good ones. my 88 is the only one worth over 1000$ it was givin to my by my dad after I got out of airforce training so that is the only exception. I came close to $1000 today for an old 122 but $970 ending bid still has it under $1000, after I spend the money in gas to drive the chevy with a 454 in it pulling the car itll be well over that though haha.

1976 Volvo 245DL
Purchase price: $0. Not running -- fuel line had rotted away and the PO had pumped a whole tank of gas into the ground trying to start it. An environmentalist's nightmare!
With new fuel line, hoses, brakes, alternator, light bulbs, ignition parts, fuel injector seals, thermostat, front tires, and some gaskets: still under $500. Dead reliable daily driver, used mostly for short trips and hauling and a little fun sometimes when the pavement is wet (4.11:1 diff, a big gas engine, and RWD make for a much more interesting drive on slick surfaces than my 52hp FWD Rabbit diesel!).

$400...delivered to my house. 146,000 miles. It just had its timing belt and water pump changed at 139,000. Red 1992 745TI. Smokes like hell because the turbo's busted. It chugged 20 miles from its PO's house to mine. I realized when it got to my house that it was crazy low on oil :( Still, I don't think any harm was done. I have gone over it pretty carefully, and here's the list of what's up. Total cost will be still less than $1000 after I fix it up.
I have done the following:
Replaced rear light stack (spare given to me by PO)
Replaced front right turning signal lens (spare given to me by PO)
Greased up sunroof (was stuck)
Resoldered Bulb out relay
Replaced Liftgate Struts
I have to:
Replace left rear window motor
Change oil and filter (several times to clear out gunk)
Change Fuel Filter
Change Air Filter
New brake pads and rotors
New turbo (used, actually)
New turbo intake host (has hole)
Change windshield washer filter and pump

$600 for that one. I bought it in '05, gave it to my dad in '07 and he still drives it to work every day.
After about 30-40k of ownership under me and my dad, this is how it sits now:

Hood was destroyed by metal debris on the highway getting caught in the alternator and flicked through the hood. Body damage courtesy of hit-n-runners, etc.

$550 - 380,000 miles. Only problem: Blown trans mount, so it vibrated like crazy on the ride home. There was also a coolant leak from the heater core, the guy was cool enough to lay down a towel and some plastic. I just looped the line under the hood in the parking lot and drove away.

I also picked up a red 740SE wagon, it had damage to the front end and the motor was blown. Got it for $350.
Another 740SE sedan for $900, damage to the rear but perfect gray cloth interior.
And a 1989 740 Turbo with Bilstein HDs, 2" sport springs, iPd sways, Borbet Type E wheels for $700.
All 4 cars came together to create "Beula".

Looks like someone wasn't reading the title of the thread before they edited their post. Most under $1000 cars aren't going to look that great.
