Guys.... I dunno why I'm doing this... but I'm putting out a feeler to volunteer my apartment/garage/welder/engine hoist to host an Atlanta mini meet. The goal of this meet is to +T as many cars as possible.

As car owners, y'all are responsible for knowing what to bring. I have listed recommended oil feed/return fittings in this post.

This isn't a f-x my busted ass car meet... it's a turbo meet. Plan on getting your hands dirty.

WHERE:

Directions to my apartment.

2402 Harbor Pointe Parkway
Atlanta, GA 30350

Very easy to get to. From anywhere, get to GA 400. Exit 6 Northridge Rd. Get off GA400, bear to the right, go back over the top of 400 and straight all the way down the hill (about 1/4 mile) to Roswell Rd.
Hang a left (south) on Roswell Rd, go south about 1/2 mile... take a right at your second traffic light at Morgan Falls Rd. Go 1 mile down to the Harbor Pointe Apartment complex (also known as Hispanic Pointe...)
Follow the signs for 2402 and you're there.

WHEN.

Saturday May 12. Doors open when I wake up. 8am. First car there gets in the garage first for some turbo loving. Meet will spill into the 13th for those travelling from out of town and for those whose bricks ain't runnin' yet.

Parking at my apartment is a tad limited... so be creative. I will have my car parked along the side of the road... fill in behind me.

PM me for my cell phone number.

BYOB

over-21 to partake of BYOB

BRING MONEY Don't show up with $5 to your name and a car that won't run.

BRING STUFF
+T people will need an oil pan gasket, oil, coolant.

BRING TOOLS

If your car isn't at stage 0, you're welcome to come, but we won't be turboing it.

This is a +T meet. We wont' be fixing broken heater cores, transmissions, brakes, seals, etc. Read that again.

Bring common sense. I have no problem kickin yo ass out.

If you plan on having your car worked on... stop by a carwash and clean your engine bay first. There's nothing worse than being covered in grease by a 20 year old car. :run: Your car will not enter my garage without being reasonably clean.

Cars can only be in the air in my garage and in my driveway. You can work on a car outside my driveway, but it has to be on the ground.

THINGS TO BRING FOR THE +T WEEKEND.

Gang. Right now we have 4 +T people, and as many as six. That's a lot of work. Y'all have to be prepared, we have to work quickly and smartly in order to get everyone done.

We'll probably start by getting the oil return bung welded into each person's oil pan... this means the car goes in the garage, up on jackstands, we engine hoist the engine slightly, remove pan, weld in fitting, replace pan, reassemble, roll car out of the garage for the next one. This also means that +T people have priority in the garage. If you're bolting on a turbo to an existing turbo car, you can do that out in the driveway. ;-)

If we do oil returns first, everything else after that is basically a bolt on.

If you show up and your engine bay is a greasy mess, I'm going to send you off to the car wash to clean it. You MUST have a clean engine bay and crossmember. Period. It's not coming into my garage if it's a mess. Sorry. :)

If we have time, we can fix other problems... but this is going to be a +T meet... not a "hey I also have this other problem" meet. You know what I'm talking about.... "hey, my heater core is leaking", or "hey, my rear axle is making popping sounds", or "hey, my engine is making this knocking sound". If your car isn't already at stage 0, then don't bring it. I'm not kidding. :)

If we get the oil returns done, then we'll start cracking on making downpipes for all the 240 people.

OK... oil return stuff. T3 people can use the oil return fittings I mentioned previously.

There's another option for oil returns... I spoke to a person yesterday who had a mitsu td05 and didn't realize the oil feed/return lines were completely different.

So... here's the minimum you need to bring.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=STF%2D8807&N=700+4294859977+4294859887+4294859650+115&autoview=sku

this is a weld-in steel bung with a 1/2" NPT female threads. It's the most general option available. Also remember to pick up a 1/2" NPT plug just in case.

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/stf-8807_w.jpg

The other option is the 10AN weld-in bung.

240 people must bring a 740 downpipe... or the parts necessary to make a downpipe. I ain't Summit Racing.

Bring something to sit on.

Bring your own beer.

Bring a box of zipties. Bring electrical tape.

Bring money to get yo ass home!

What time you thinking about doing this Mike?
I could be down.
I even got my 242 running yesterday but it's already a T HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, no +T here.
I've got a real Turbo engine!!!!
Muahahahahah
K-jets is da bomb though, after sitting for a year and a half it started right up, once I bypassed the apparently faulty fuel pump relay and once I hooked the coil up correctly(haynes manual ftw).
Not bad considering the gas in it was a year or so old when I got the car in 2005.

This weekend is out... obviously... I'm driving up North.

But the next several weekends are open... how does the 21th sound?

and I'm game to whatever... 16v swap... megasquirt.... +T.... it just has to be epic.

I'll be there as long as it's not the last weekend in April, and I'm always happy to work on others' cars. It's been too long since I've attended a meet.

edit- 21st sounds great to me!

Guys.... I dunno why I'm doing this... but I'm putting out a feeler to volunteer my apartment/garage/welder/engine hoist to host an Atlanta mini meet.

I'd love to help wrench... I'm in unless I have a scheduling conflict. I'd like to see you tig weld something. I can only make bird poo with my flux welder.

before I leave (yes, leave ATL)

Man I hate that.

I want to hold a mini meet in my shared garage to +T someone's car.

I have most of the parts to +T my Volvo (T72, exhaust manifold, flanges, etc.)... but since its my daily driver I should probably stick to NA V8 power (plus LT1s have 10 to 1 compression). The turbo parts are being gathered for my El Camino (http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/c/l/clindh/webpage.htm) (currently tuning the Megasquirt... baby steps, baby steps).

beer will be provided (I haven't had a chance to use my keg tap since I've been in ATL...

Uh... did somebody say beer

im game if my cylinder head comes back from the ms, but the drive might add 'swapp a clutch' to the day, i could bring parts too if needed

and if we need i can go buy a volvo for us to +t, maybe

or finish my ms2, or put in a locker, or maybe i could buy some camber plates, or we could +T the 325is

Hey I think this is my first meet being of age- yay. Speaking of which- has anyone here done the Sweetwater tour, and is it any good?

Also, will there be chances to ride in the 16V turbo? Riding in a dream car sounds like about the next best thing to building one...

I have no serious projects that need to be done, so my services are at the disposal of others.

Heres the deal. I've got a partially wrecked, yet still running (bad fuel prob)
90 740. its got a skinny rod motor, so that will need to be swapped....

I also have:

Welded 4:10 diff from a 90 16v wagon
spare aw71 transmission
60/63 with ported manifold. also spare 13c
spare heads (530).
spare MSNS harness.

Anyway, the idea is to build a quick, fast, cheap dirty, stripped out drag car in 24 hours. Then drag it to a track and run it down the 1/4 mile to a 13 or 12 sec pass, for as long as it holds together.

We'd need a few pieces to make it work, but nearly all the parts going into it are spares or discarded. Between myself, mike h and the rest of the ATL crew, we could build a fun, cheap fast car and make some nice videos of it before it eventually destroys itself.

Kinda like the turbocontainern' project only with a far more strict budget and time constraint.

edit: there are a few things i'd have to check on as far as the car is concerned, but if not, I know of a few other willing victim 740s we could use....

VolvoPunch
04-03-2007, 06:24 PM
I will do it! :hyper: I was plaining on pulling a 93 and doing a +T to it but maybe we could +T my current car and if it blows up then so what. I was going to rebuild a 93 anyways. The only problem i see is that i have ZERO turbo parts. I have been at the junkyard off and on for about 6 mouths now and have not been able to find any parts. So i some one could help me find some or sell me some of your own then i would be game. How much do you think it will cost?

My current car is running but it failed emissions. It also has very little power so i think the cat might be clogged and i think the pistion rings are shot even through i have not done a compression test, but other then having the slowest car on the streets it runs fine.

I am totally game. :spin: I just need to get this part shortage problem solved.

On another note, why are you leaving the ATL?

keep it sleeper

I like what we've come up with.

Gene... the 15g sounds good. Do you have a downpipe? wg flange?

Volvopunch... Lots of 740's in the JY... I was just at pap yesterday and there several 740tics with nice chunks of stuff left. It would be best if you could compile some parts between now and then if you're serious... That and you will need to come up with some $$ to buy oil feed/return parts... about $150. figure $40 for exhaust. You'll need injectors, the fuel and ignition computers, IC pipes, IC, IC upper/lower brackets.

Mark... I like the 13 second volvo idea... I think if we all work together we can pull something like this off.

BTW... Mark... your car runs :-D

wildmanben
04-03-2007, 08:51 PM
I too think we stand a chance at pulling off the 13 second brick in 24 hours. And no need to worry about 'drunken cobbling,' we've all got to be able to drive home at the end anyway (well all but Mike). Plus, several of us have a lot of experience with megasquirt (although if Kenny comes, none of that would even matter :-P).

04-03-2007, 09:35 PM
Ok... I have two willing +T participants.... one lacks all the parts, and the other lacks the turbo... they have a couple weeks to acquire parts.

I have a goodly amount of +T odds and ends, but the bulk of the core parts should come from y'all. You're both doing 240's... so we can either make a new downpipe, or we can make a 740T downpipe fit... choice is yours.

Oil feed/return parts will come out to about $150...

Don't worry about ancillary stuff like the oil cooler for now... you can always add that later.

If you have LH2.4, you'll need the turbo LH2.4 stuff.

Adam... you have lh2.2... I'm going to make you a chrysler-to-EZK117k conversion kit... what you'll need to do is acquire a LH2.2 740 turbo ignition computer and we're good.

Mike

Parts to buy:
elring exhaust manifold gaskets
oil pan gasket
oil pump o-rings

Gallons of brake parts cleaner, purple power, a bag or two of kitty litter, and cardboard.

if you're f+t'ing a 240, its a good time to do motor mounts as well./

If there is space for one more car and the date works, I'm game. I don't remember seeing a date in there. Did I miss it?

Anyway, the only thing I'm missing are send and return lines for oil and water. I don't think that's too much of an issue really.

You have much straight 3" pipe hangin' around. I have a super turbo to do duty in the rear and a 3" cat as well. The DP that I'll use is a modified 740 unit that will fit in a 240 without banging the firewall and a relocated 02 sensor. It flares to 3" once it gets under the car heading back.

I just need to make sure I can find my -90 manifold (going to use a td05-12b).

Let me know. This sounds like fun.

To the +T guys... you may want to pick up a transmission while you're at pap... esp. those of you with an AW70... find a 740T that was bashed in somewhere... smell the tranny fluid. If it's not burnt, it's a good candidate. Can't beat it for only $50.

There were no turbos, but there were TONS of turbo cars.

Conley is supposed to be hyuuuge compared to Norcross, and Norcross is pretty big!

Mike, wish I could go - I need a guide to take me to Conley for my virgin visit (I can hardly find my ass with both hands and a huntin dog!), but I have family stuff all day.

Ditto to what Chris said. Buford is a bit picked over... but they still have turbo cars... Conley is huge compared to Buford and is worth checking out.

I was serious about picking up a spare tranny... :) Even if you just keep it in your garage...

I have a 12b turbo+manifold that I can sell to one of you for cheap if you can't get your hands on a turbo. The only thing I don't have are the oil feed/return lines.

I can probably put together a 42/48 T3 plus 90+ housing for a small fee... but I think I lack a cold-side housing and a wg housing... there's always that atp-turbo contraption I made...

I'd like to keep the meet just Saturday... I'm insanely busy with work-moving-packing, etc.... so a one-day meet is going to have to be where it's at... if we spill over into Sunday finishing up the installations, that's cool... but I'm kicking yer asses all out at 9pm Sunday night. ;)

Who's still on? How about my +T people? How are you doing parts-collecting?

VolvoPunch

I am still at stage zero when it comes to collecting parts. My family has been at my house this whole week and when they were leaving Friday evening my ant had an accident (Pictures) (http://picasaweb.google.com/swedishvolvo/Accident07) with her van. She ran into the curb big time and fractured three studs on the van wheel while blowing out the tire. So i had to change the tire as best i could so that the tow truck could take it to the shop for repairs. Then we spent all day today making sure it got fixed so that they could go and give us some peace

Hey dude... not to worry. At the very worst, maybe we could just get the oil return fitting welded into your pan.... then, in the future, once you collected the parts, the +T swap is trivially easy. Just watching and seeing what needs to be done will be very helpful... and fun.

It would be far easier for me to make this in may. And if anyone is seriously considering my idea of building the 13/12 sec car for a day, it would be easier for me to procure a victim by that time. Finals time for me and its kickin my ass.

Also... if you guys have any loud obnoxious music, air horns, etc.... it would be great to bring them so we can piss off all 3000 of my illegal immigrant hispanic neighbors that have made my life so miserable these last several years. Open exhausts would work too.

by that time, hopefully my 940's stereo will make its re-debut. I say in addition to open DPs and drags, we have some decibel drags as well.

1400w and woofers ftw.

Sounds good guys. All are welcome.

To the +T guys... you may want to pick up a transmission while you're at pap... esp. those of you with an AW70... find a 740T that was bashed in somewhere... smell the tranny fluid. If it's not burnt, it's a good candidate. Can't beat it for only $50.

Still in NJ... going to be on the road in 2 hours... gonna try to do the 14hr drive to ATL in one shot.

Gene, sometime later this week for the tranny is fine.

Not sure if my welder is capable of welding diffs... it's just a little lincoln 140. I do have some flux core wire we could try for that... but ehh..

Cutting springs is fine... T5 swap... eh... unless you've got the driveshaft fitted, not such a good idea.

AW71 from a 90 740 with 175000 miles
M46 from a '84 245 with 135000
Auto tranny from a 960 (RWD) with 160000 miles

The price is not a concern for me and the fluid in all of them looked good and didn't have a bunt smell or anything. Ether one I choose, I will be getting the peddles from the 245. So which one should I choose and what do I need to get along with that tranny?

That 960 tranny should be completely wrong for you. Whiteblock inline-6.

The rest is basically whether you want auto or stick. My AW71 has over 200k on it and still shifts nice. I'm still under 200HP though (174?).

Does Peter in Marietta know about this meet? I don't know his screen name.

http://chrislindh.googlepages.com/TB111106025mid.jpg

We stopped and chatted the other day, as he lives very close to me.

O yeah Peter (I forgot his name  ) he's a good guy. He got a steal on that brick. Hope he comes.

+T people... did my parts list scare ya?

Yup the list scared me. But I will be ordering the oil lines soon. What parts do I need to bring for the exhaust system? Will there be piping at the meet? If so what size.

I have the exhaust manifold on the way and I will be ordering the oil line parts. I will also need a down pipe from a 740 or can/should we build one?

Parts list UPDATED
What I have or what is coming:
90+ exhaust manifold
Oil line parts
Fuel Computer from a 740 Turbo
Green toped injectors
Bottom radiator/IC mounts

What I think I need and don’t have:
Ignition computer from a 740 turbo
Intercooler
top radiator/IC mounts
Grab the IC piping from a 740?
740 DP
A Turbo (What type/model)
Vacuum Lines
Heater Sender

Have I covered everything?

//Added

I will also need to bring oil and a oil pan gasket if we are going to be drilling in the pan.

Zach.

I think we can make a 740turbo DP work... by cutting/rewelding. We can also make it merge back into your factory system so you won't need to do the entire 3" exhaust system right now.

Yes, you need the radiator/IC upper and lower brackets from a 240tic or 740tic... as well as the IC piping (this must come from a 740 tic... I can probably help one or both of ya out in this area).

Turbo is up to you... whatever you can get ahold of... I would recommend a garrett T3. The oil feed fitting will work with the T3... I'm not sure what fitting is required for a mitsu 13c or equivalent.

The oil lines will add up to about $100... but is something that will last the life of the car.

Remember when you get the injectors, to also get the ballast resistor and about 1 foot of the wiring. This is found on the driver's side inner fenderwell of 740tics...

Yes... bring an oil pan gasket and some oil... DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE OIL COOLER RIGHT NOW! 240 people must use the oil cooler lines from a 240turbo... haven't seen any of them at PAP for a while now... it's not a deal breaker.

PS... Conley just got in a new row yesterday.

Assuming he still has the banjo bolts, he could do something like this.

http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/Catalog%20Images/Fittings/ATP-FTG-018_450.jpg
http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tp&Product_Code=ATP-FTG-018&Category_Code=BCS

This is based on the idea of TD04's and TD05's both using 12mm banjo bolts, which I'm pretty sure is correct. I'll double check when I get home.

As for a feed, I take mine now (on Sylvanna) from the front of the block and that's what I'm going to do this time as well. It's a 1/4 NPT to 4AN adapter.

http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/Catalog%20Images/Oil%20Supply/18NPT-4-225225.jpg

There is another option if you have the hard lines (sounds like The Matrix). You can adapt the the steel hard lines to the braided line. I know that doesn't sound like anything at all so I'll just take pics when I get home. :)

As for the cut and welding the 740DP, you are right on the money. That's how mine is setup and it worked perfectly.

Isn't that motor in pieces? There's a 91 big-rod motor at the PAP in Buford.

Yup, the motor is in pcs but is in good shape, just in need of cleaning and reassembly. If someone needs it and doesn't have the time to go to the jy they could have is. Just putting it out there.

Here is another option on how to do oil supply lines. You can see the braided line going into a series of adpaters that on the other side connects to what was once an OE hard oil line. It's essentially a compression fitting on the end of the hard line. Works great (meaning it doesn't leak a drop)!

Anyway, I think I'm the only Mitsu guy in this so hopefully this will help someone else at another time. :)

Do you have a picture?) , jetronic full computer from an 88 740 turbo wagon, and some bottom brackets for the radiator and intercooler. I could not find the top ones. Did i get the right full computer? Where on the car will i find the ignition computer and what does it look like.

The pullapart in Conley is so much better then the one in Norcross. I have gone to the pullapart in Norcross about 5 times and i have never seen any turbo Volvo's there.

I was not sure about the 740 DP so i did not grab it. The DP is what the turbo exhaust goes into right?

I will update my parts list.

drilling is somewhat tough unless the engine is outside of the car, you've got a hefty drill and some good bits. That being said, I tapped my block for it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but if it is inside the car, just tap the pan.

Wow! It's amazing that all you guys had such a hard time drilling the block. To me it was easy. I certainly understand the space issues though. I have two drills....the larger having a half inch chuck. I wanted to use that drill to enlarge the hole in the block but it was too big to get into the space (this is talking about the car that's allready turbocharged). I'm prolly going to try again, but come up from underneath (I'm rebuilding the front suspension anyways so might as well while I'm there).

But that said, I just went slow and kept the surfaces from heating up and everything went well.

This time, I just want to take the OE return pipe, cut it in half, weld the lower half into the pan (which of course implies that I'll drill a hole in the pan for it), then use bs line to span the gap. I'm thinking about making it a little less ghetto by putting a compression fitting on the top of the return side to help reduce the possibility of leaking (like say from a line that's just clamped on the end).

But it's all good. I'm just looking forward to hangin' out and getting a chance to see people that I've chatted and argued with ( ) for some time now. :)

Zach, you need to step up man... I have a TD05-12b and manifold I can sell ya for cheap... like $50 cheap for both, but I don't have the oil feed or return fittings... You would have to get a td05-12b return line from someone (maybe a 13c will work?) and we can make something work.

Adam... remember, if you take off that wastegate housing for whatever reason, you need to liberally douse it with PB Blaster!!

On that note... while I'm pretty busy this weekend... I might be able to start your +T earlier than the 12th... PM me if you're interested. We could get the oil pan installed... That would be a huge time saver.

Mike

Thanks for the help Mike.
Here is some pictures of my Garret T3  after I cleaned it up some, nothing special about it.

What could we do with this thing to make it more fun?
Can't do the +Ti tell the 12th, I have requested that day off and can't change it.

I have an extra set of cold side innercooler piping that I can sell you. Also you can have the manifold in the pictures above.

I think I'm going to change to a Garret. I have a Ford .60/.63, an extra CHRA with no housings, and a Nissan .42 AR 60 trim housing (300zx). I want to use the Nissan housing to see if my suspicions are correct about what it would do to spool time.

Advantages:
a) No coolant lines to deal with
b) Will mount on my extra 90+
c) The bigger hot side will prolly run cooler then a Mitsu

That said, can anyone tell me about the wastegate side? It's turbo is from a Ford right. Will the Volvo Garrett WG housings fit on in?

Cheers

I may take you up on that Justin. Few things have cropped up recently that I need for my 740s... Plus I just want to go to Conley for once. :)

I am going sunday morning early, My Dad is joining me as there is a spitfire there and he needs parts for his. We are driving his truck (GMC 2500HD Longbed) as he wants the frame if its in good shape. We will probably be there when it opens at 8 or shortly thereafter. I can't be down there more than a few hours. I will help with anything I can so let me know who to look for.

As far as me coming to the meet I can be there Saturday morning early until about 1pm or so as I have to go to a wedding up in the mountains at 4 and did anybody notice that this is also mother's day weekend? I can grab a couple of OEM parts if anyone can think of something needed for these jobs (gaskets, lines, hoses, tubing, etc..) I get a substantial employee discount and I would be happy to help

My humble apt. abode lies in the People's Republic of Sandy Springs. Off exit 6 on 400, South on Roswell Rd. Right on Morgans Falls. Easy easy.

Zach.

A Td05-12b is a mitsubishi turbo found on some late 80's 740tics. It uses the pre-90 manifold. I have one and the manifold in decent condition. I don't have the oil lines.

A 13c is another mitsu turbo found on 90-later 740/940tics. It uses the 90+ manifold. If you whisper sweet-nothings to Mark, I'm sure he'll sell it to ya for cheap. You'll still need oil lines (not the ones I listed previously).

Mike

PS... lots of people have offered parts for sale in this thread... search back and get in touch with them with PM's.

I will bring the pipes.
You should get new seals just to be on the safe side of things and I get get you a set for $5.00 an injector ($20 for all injectors). Also, did you get the resistor pack for those injectors?
I am getting my injectors cleaned and flow tested and I can give the number to the place if you would like.

Anybody have a slotted A-cam that they want to sell for cheap? Maybe Chris and I could get some nice hp+. If any of you guys want me to bring some Volvo parts from my dealership I need your requests by Thursday May 10 so I can order what we don't have. Seals and anything else that you take off to do anything will need to be replaced. Any other parts you might need or want prices for PM me with what you need and for what car year/model/trim.

Chris - I will be at the J/Y on Sunday right around 8am coming?
Anyone else interested?

Everybody needs to go to Advanced Auto Parts or Auto Zone and buy a few spray bottles of Purple Power degreaser. Go to the car wash, let it cool down some, then spray down every square inch of the engine bay. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then spray it off with high pressure soap and water, then do it all again and rinse with high pressure water. Do this right before the meet. If it doesn't start after you do this call a tow truck.
Trust me you will be glad you did this.

Yeah boy! This stuff is awesome. I use it for grease spills in the garage.

I degreased the engine about a week ago and at least I can see fer shizzle that I have a leaking front cam seal. Yeah, we may as well change that out while I'm up there. :)
