So...perusing the internet one evening i found this list of volvo performance stuff...
Looking on the list i see something about a guy named Don Schmid and it lists his phone number and says; Fiberglass Fenders for 240 series
for the ridiculous price of... - $40 ea
Anyone know about this?
I am thinking about calling him up, has anyone done this already?

Wouldn't hurt to give him a buzz and see if this is legit... sounds a little unrealistic though...
maybe this should've been a secret... phhhwaahhh yeah right
Nice internet digging and I'm so in for a set if it only cost $80+shipping.

I see no advantage? What do the stock fenders weigh? 3 pounds?

There was a Swedish company (I believe Swedish, may have been Finnish) that produced entire fiberglass 240 rally bodies, for cheap. It was not ultra high quality stuff, it was rally quality -- resembled a 240 and was thick enough that the wind wouldn't blow it off the car.

my '87 fenders are about 12lb each. 3-4lb for a fiberglass or CF fender should be possible. 15lb off the nose and built in tire clearance is the advantage.

Back in the early 90s I had a set of fiberglass fenders on the front of my 79 245. IIRC the local body panel stockist had them for $90CDN a side which was cheaper than the steel ones, so my dad opted for them. They didn't rust which is why they were a popular option here in Eastern Canada and probably had little to do with weight savings. ( I think they were not much lighter anyway)
About a year later, the drivers side front tire delaminated during a high speed run through Algonquin provincial park...and a large flap of rubber whipped around and tore the bottom 10 inches of that fender off behind the wheel.
The place we bought the fenders had other goodies including replacement Volvo steel rockers and wheel well bits and other often rusted replacement panels.
I'll see if they are still in business.

I've thought about fiberglass before - for the 10 lbs. or so weight savings you're probably sacrificing a lot of safety and strength. No way I'm doing that to my daily driver.

Had some for a 240 at one point in time. The ones I had wieghed more than the steel fenders, so they lived in a pile in the garage for a while, and were cast away as scrap.

How do fibreglass fenders make your car unsafe? AFAIK they're not of enormous structural importance....

unsafe? dont think so.
the only con i can see with fibergalss is they're less durable. prone to chipping and cracking and whatnot.
