88 gauge cluster work with 93 240?

I have been wanting to get a tachometer for my 1993 240 but my whole cluster just went out so I need to buy a whole new cluster and I know someone who has a cluster with a tachometer already in it but it is from a 1988 240. Will the 1988 gauge cluster work in my 1993 240? Thanks.

Speedo is different, plus, I think there were some changes in 1989, when LH 2.4 came out. I know there's an extra wire that goes to a terminal near the speedometer on the 1989-93 cars. You can use a 1989-91 non-ABS cluster, provided you have the correct K 39200 or K 40168 speedometer to swap in place of the K 9800 or K 10042 speedometer that's in there. Then, take the satin finish tach from the '88 GL cluster and swap it to the newer one. It won't look right, due to the different finish, but it'll work. There's one other difference that you'll want to know about. The 1989 clusters don't have the metal tube that allows you to reset the service light from the front. Instead, you have to reach up behind and flip the lever by hand.

The results can be seen here:

1989-93 cluster with a tach from a 240 Turbo, which is a gloss finish.

So a 1989 gauge cluster would work in a 1993 240?

Not as is.

Like I said, it requires a 1991-93 ABS speedometer. One with a K 39200 or K 40168 marking on the front. Using a 1989-90 cluster or a non-ABS 1991-92 cluster without changing the speedometer head will cause it to read 4x as fast as you're going.

Probably best to just get the correct cluster and add a tachometer.

OP, just go by the number on the face plate of the speedo. The numbers here are correct for an ABS speedometer. They were only used in 1992 and 1993. The 1991 240 with optional ABS still used a K9800 or K10042 speedometer with a signal converter that altered the 48 tooth tone ring signal into something the the speedometer could read correctly.
