That's odd, because I have a 1972 1800 suspension in my 122 and it's identical to the 66 122 suspension offset (which should be identical to the 66 1800 offset). I needed spacers to run FWD wheels...

The bottom of the engine is sealed with liquid gasket. If that's what's cracked open I can't think of any fix that doesn't involve pulling the engine apart and re-applying.

You will find a lot more wheels if you're willing to use spacers, that's what I did for my 122. 20 or 25 mm puts you right in all the FWD offset range.

In my experience if you slip the clutch it gets pretty stinky pretty quickly. Might need to get out of the car and check immediately after though. It can clear up pretty fast as well.

You can also make a P2 downpipe work if you have access to a welder or exhaust shop.

Yeah, just make sure you put it in the right place. Don't use the 65 mounting points as a reference, as the 68 arms are much longer. Measure from the axle center or some other datum.
