The glue gets really dry, you can chip it off fairly easily. My headlight covers fell off the 91 740t I had, I chipped out the old glue and used aquarium grade silicone to reassemble, worked great....

Are you installing used ones? They always have an unknown life span which is why I used to collect piles of them, and have a spare stashed in the trunk. They could last a mile or 10 years, who knows?...

Distilled water and a microfiber cloth works really well unless you are spraying goo around your interior that requires a chemical or soap to remove. I have a small spray bottle for the water.

I would advise registering the car in a state with realistic emissions laws. Can you register as an antique? That's what I did in PA, no emissions or inspection ever again.
