What brand did you get of the band clamp? There seems to be all different levels of quality. Torco Torctite, EasySeal and Walker HD seem to hold up the best. They are typically 304 stainless.

You have to hold the top of the strut stationary while turning that nut. There's a special tool for that or use an impact wrench with a deep 15/16" or 24...
