Sounds to me that you have a 850/960 starter. 99-> has a different(I'd say larger) diameter starter ring gear. If you have a solid flywheel(or <-98 dual mass), then use 960, 850 or x70 starter.

Reinstalling the manifold takes only a couple minutes with regular hose...
