I had a similar issue with my '86 744Turbo: turns out it was a bad coolant temperature swithch, sending incorrect info to the ECU.

Then I chase the threads, then a final blast of compressed air.

The new ones of plastic and aluminum cannot be repaired the same way so must be replaced.
