New Member getting ready to go turbo

Struts

As with any repair job, good quality parts will be your key to success. I personally hate to do a job twice, so you may want to look into getting new strut mount plates, and ball joints while your at it........this is the part I don't love about the P2's they don't give good quality parts away thats for sure.

I can't tell you my experience with the cheap stuff, never done it. :-P

I am sure with your skills the job will be a breeze.

That kit will do the job perfectly, Should feel like brand new again. Thats the way I like to do it when time and budget allows, specially when the car starts to get some miles on it because if you don't you seem to be forever chasing that rainbow trying to keep up on repairs.

I have a drive shaft going bad on my wifes 2003 xc70, Another nightmare.

yeah we got the car for a grand and id never worked on those engines, so i decided that it be a wise move to tackle the pcv system and all the lines that go with it as an intro. took 6-8 hours. i know the engine very well now

I was thinking of putting a white block into my 240 for a while, my sons 2002 s60 is about to reach 300k, we have never has the engine apart , have only done the usual PCV, timing , hoses etc. So I know if treated well and properly maintained they are very reliable. However now all said and done I feel the redblock will be more trouble free and cheaper to maintain.

I just hope to have about 225 hp like the xc does because I plan to tow with the 240.

Won't be extreme towing just a lil 17" boat at times and more often lots of wood.

Well my car project is on hold once again.

My son was in a horrific crash 55 mph head on into a guardrail

He's ok and thanks to being in a Volvo I feel thats why he was able to walk away with a few burns, cuts, and bruises.

I was at the time trying to talk my daughter-inlaw to get a Volvo as she was currently car shopping because of the safety and then this happened. After the accident she said that she only wants a volvo so we went and found her one (2004 S60 awd) so I will have a complete service to do to that car , and then my son will be getting a replacement S60 soon so I will be servicing that one as well. I put my project on hold once again due to time constraints and will put their cars ahead of mine.

I am just grateful he is ok, apparently he fell asleep at the wheel and crossed lanes hitting the guardrail , the driver behind him said he was behind him for miles and all was good he was doing the speed limit and everything , then all of a sudden during a curve in the road went straight into the guardrail never even hitting the brakes. He said after impact the car did a summer salt and thats how it landed that way off the bank. He said he expected to see the worse and that he was amazed to see my son crawling out the back door almost instantly.

The doors were fine and still open but he was crammed in with the snow.

Live to race another day man.... Sorry about your bad luck on this, glad everyone is able to walk away...

Window Washer bottle

Ok so one of the smallest issues is finding out what to do with the washer bottle after doing a turbo swap.

I found that after I cut a bit off the battery tray to relocate the battery a bit closer to the side so I could run the inter-cooler piping, the 740 washer bottle the small side will squeeze under it. and support one end. So I made a bracket that sits under the large side to support it and hold it tight. It fits pretty nice where the old N/A airbox use to be.

Figured if anyone is reading this for their own swap I would share it here.

Sorry the second photo is so dark I was trying to show how the small end fits under the battery tray.

Super thanks to you again Billy, I know I have said it before ....but you really made my swap so easy on me with all the help you given.

I got "Carla" running and boy does she run good. I have a video I did of the first start up I'll share below. I also took it out yesterday and drove her up and down my street (no windshield yet) but was able to do a few pulls and hear the turbo...hehe I let it run for quite awhile and so far not a single hiccup. Today I am making an appointment to get my windshield installed and getting it legal so I will be driving her soon.

I also put a little slide show together to for sharing some of my memorys of this build.

This is how she looks as of yesterday , I still have some cosmetics to do and a few odds and ends to order, but she runs!

Update

Took her to the lake today about a 50 mile round trip and she runs great. Had a little bit of a rough idle when I fired it up this morning but started right away just a bit rough. I thought the first time it may have been rough at idle because the computer was still learning. Also about 1/2 way to the lake my temp gauge just dropped and gave a zero reading , stayed off for a little bit and came back on...

I'll give it a few days now that I am driving her and see how she acts.

Got all the issues sorted out and now want a bigger turbo. Dad needs more pow'ah. Installed a boost gauge and I am getting 7ish. Next step will be to put a manual boost control on it and pump it up to about 10-12 psi. Hoping that will hold me over until I can get a bigger turbo. I got a little more the 500 miles on it so far and all has been good...knock on wood.

There's quite a bit more potential in the stock turbo, you can turn it up to 10psi easily without any issues, 12psi should be fine as long as you run premium fuel. By the time you start upgrading the turbo you need to start looking at injectors, ECU chip, exhaust, beyond that stronger rods and whatnot, it gets expensive real quick. IMHO if you want a dependable daily driver just turn up the wick a little and be content with 180-200HP, that's pretty decent power for a car that is not particularly heavy by modern standards.

Ok so maybe I stressed the daily driver a bit much, by daily driver I mean a car thats fun to drive, but not like my 67 firebird I once had with a high stall speed converter that made parking in parking lots a really touch due to needing to get the rpms up to 2k just to move the car. Or have such crappy fuel mileage you don't want to take it on road trips. A car that will be fun to drive normal but will also get up and go if needed. Only thing I do not want to sacrifice is drive-ability.

I am not opposed to ECU upgrades, tranny swaps, stronger rods, etc. but I do want a car that will drive normal when I want to drive normal.

Adding to the project I just picked up a 1031, and I will be installing a tone ring in it and putting that in, so I am not afraid to customize.

Nice junk pile. Looks like you have enough parts there to build yourself one adjustable torque rod.

haha.....I found this axle in the junk yard...the owner of it has a 15 foot tall pile of axles as you can see they don't waste no time pulling them they just cut them out.

The torque rods grabbed my attention the dual ribs on the 1031 kept my attention.

Axle is home with me now safe and sound all gears are nice and tight. I will be putting in new seals and a tone ring.....then popping it into my car.

I'm glad I found this thread,I just picked up a 90 740 donar car, I'll be doing a this swap in my 89 245..thanks for all the good information.

Have any questions feel free to ask. I made it though this one very easy with the help of Billy and I just went and bought another car from the salvage yard and going to do it all over again.
