flat undertray/ flat floor

does anyone have experience with making a full "flatfloor" for a 245 or 240

im just trying to figure out if i need to lower the car more or extend the front lip more or a bit of both so that i dont need to worry about creating lift from the wrong angles

also do you think that approx 10 gauge alu shoud be thick enough

Too much spliff makes you imagine all kinds of crazy things...First things first..
This shouldn't be on the list.
 
10 gauge would be more than enough. You want to be as low as your form of racing will allow whether by the rules or limits of reasonable suspension travel. you want to reach out into the clean air and split it. clean flow underneath and a diffuser of some kind in the rear. but as mentioned above this is an extreme thing to do to your car with negligible results and unless you have some sort of testing ability you may do more damage than good. that said, do it. we need more crazy volvos. I vote Time attack with a giant wing. gotta do some testing though or its just for looks.

That's the spirit, so I'm totally fine being honest here I want to do it for 3 reason and here they are

1. Cornering grip and better mid to top end acceleration I feel these points are fairly self exsplanitory

2. I do about 450 miles of highway driving at between 90 to 120 kph+ a week and although I know you can only make a brick so aerodynamic, a bit of fun can't hurt too much

3. You got me.

And although I don't have proper testing facility's I do have a few ideas into how to see if there's any benifits at all as well as any sort of flat undertray will reduce drag period, so that all being said, I'm young a little dumb and a lot crazy, so once I Get going on the number of things that I have planned,hopefully we will see some crazy time attack style stuff coming

What size and brand/model of tires are on your car right now?

well as I'm from Canada and am often in the mountains i just have 196/65r15s but im planning on either running a 205 or 215 by 50 or 45 on a 16 or 17 inch rim, maybe hydras or some aftermarket option come summer time

well then i suppose i shall explain my logic then and then you can prove me right wrong or totally wrong

the basic idea is that a smoother body shape, of any kind help promote laminar flow therefor fewer eddies and less turbulence around the body. this promoted high speed stability in a straight line, or so i believe it does

as with a properly designed under tray, you are able to incorporate some shape of tunnel/ channels into the tray, this leads to air being forced either " up " creating down force. or you can keep in in line like a very long diffuser, in the same way that a fin on a surfboard keeps you in a straight line, or it can help you turn when angled into the direction of fluid flow ( in the case of a car air is our fluid)

once again this is what my small amount of research has given me

modification wise i have done almost nothing cosmetically, i have a set of ipd lowering springs installed as well as 25/23 sways, front strut brace as well as strut to firewall bracing , lower front chassis bracing, i also have a set of billy hd's coming in the mail.

if you cant tell im quite a fan of semi outlandish ideas, but that is the beauty of being young and still living at home, which means that i do have the money to spend (waste in some eyes ) on these ideas.

hopfully that gives an idea of where im starting from


p.s. wouldn't a dirty car be faster as the small divots would reduce the drag coefficient as per the effect they have on a golf ball?

Tires are the single biggest determining factor of "grip". More important than all other aspects combined. Contact patch (width) and compound most specifically.
A decent street tire in 235-245mm width would provide more grip than most will know what to do with on the street. And if by the off chance you were some driving prodigy, enough grip to go way faster on mountain roads than you safely should. Unless you grew up racing karts or something I highly doubt this is the case.

If you are going 195mph on the salt flats and trying to figure out how to get to 200mph, sure this is the type of stuff you'd probably trying to do.
But in reality you're a kid driving a bread box through the mountains at under 100mph. Tires and dampener/spring/alignment/balance will be the most noticeable gains.
 
You might notice some MPG improvements if you do alot of highway driving with an undertray but i doubt you would gain any increase in handling.

If you want to go around corners faster, get wider tires and wheels and the components needed to get a good alignment

I'd do it just to quiet the ****er down in the highway.
 
Put a fiberglass Dodge Daytona / Superbird nose cone on it or go / stay home.

Hey do you have any slotted b cams for sale for my 240?
Also maybe a write up as to how to install it. I?ve only done 2 cam swaps so I?m not comfortable yet.

I remember reading a thread before where someone claimed a couple mpg's were picked up on a 245 by fashioning an under tray from the rear end to the underside of the bumper and lowering the front air dam.
