Modifying speedo for use with t5

otherwise if you go full custom. and autometer speedo can be wired right into the electric mustang sender as well!

Perhaps at some point - but I have a full compliment of Volvo/VDO gauges that all work properly with the Ford engine. Like to stick with that.

Picture of the back of a 240 cluster removed from car. Remove the 7 screws along the outter perimeter.

Remove the brown board from the plastic housing.

To access the back of the speedometer remove the 4 screws from the plastic casing.

From here you will be able to see the calibration resister. I just cut the resistor off and soldered in thin gauge wire with a variable resistor on the end for easy calibrating.

I understand this process takes care of the speedometer calibration but what about the odometer stepper input? They are controlled independent of the speedo calibration resistor as far as I can tell...Won?t they be getting the un-calibrated signal from the t5 vss, and therefore be logging an incorrect mileage? What if the variable resistor (adjustable potentiometer) was placed on the signal wire upstream of the 3-pin connector that plugs into the back of the cluster? Has anyone successfully been able to get this to work for both the speedo and odometer?
 
Do people swapping T5's in truly care about the accuracy of their odometer? For car people it's just a reference anyway.

So often, what ends up happening is these threads go way off topic into some ridiculous argument (completely pointless) and the real questions never get answered!

I bet SOME people care about how many miles they've traveled...or how many miles it has been since their last oil change...or how many miles it has been since they swapped out their motor/trans...or...C'mon, there are countless reasons why a person would want to know their vehicle's mileage.

Back to this thread: look, if we're already talking about modifying circuits, why not go one step further and ask a question that may provide the ability to have our factory-installed speedo/odometer work properly?

This isn't OT, can we try and keep things on topic? This isn't some far-fetched, rocket-science level question. I'm sure some of our fellow Tbrickers have experience in this...let's give them a chance to respond before derailing the entire thing.
 
This is relevant to me trying to get an LH 2.4 vehicle speed signal out of a T5. My T5 has a cable speedo gear, but I'm wondering if one of these could provide a signal to an LH 2.4 ECU. Has anyone successfully gotten VSS out of a T5 and into a 2.4 ECU?
 
Planning a t-5 swap on my Red 84 242 as soon as the weather breaks and a working speedometer is the haropart to me. Haven?t looked into yet but prepping
 
I've been driving my car using a GPS for a speedometer for a couple years now, fingers crossed no tickets so far.

I have a GPS speedo too. I'm just trying to get vehicle speed to talk to LH 2.4 so it knows whether the car is moving or idling.

the odometer is setup for 12-pulses per tire (or differential) rev. From the schematics, you might be able to rework the speedo PCB to work with 6-pulses/rev or 3-pulses/rev.

The front wheel 240 ABS sensors are 48pulses/rev. I don't know if these are directly usable with a late 240 speedo board that's wired directly to the late 240 48pulse/rev differential. There's a discussion here about the 91-only 48-to-12 converter relay:

I've actually researched this myself because I don't feel like putting a tone ring on my truetrac when I install it.

On my T5 I have this sensor.

Supposedly that electrical connection is an output for the cruise control, it puts out a similar pulse to the non abs speedo. I was going to attempt wiring it up and seeing what it does shortly. Also since I had a Fox T5, it most likely is already set up for 3.73 gearing.

The other idea I had was using a strut housing from an ABS 240 and using the ABS sensor as a speedo pickup.
 
Yeah I just ordered one of those, and I think it'll work. Just need to get my hands on an LH 2.4 speedo to convert the signal to something the ECU can use.
 
I don't know if this will be helpful but I recently put a G80 in a T5 swapped lh2.4 240. I swapped a 1997 v6 T5 with an electronic sender and was going to use a dakota digital speedometer adapter to connect the t5 speed sender to the stock speedometer. Before I tried connecting the speedometer adapter I just wired the T5 speed sender to where the stock differential speed sender and was amazed to find the speedometer/odometer within 2% of GPS recorded speed.
