The Beige Bounce Back - Vol242vo's 242

You're doing great work here. Love the car.

However, this thread could have ended after that photo of the speaker held into the door with zip ties, and it would still be the best thing on TB.

LOL, yeah that was a pretty laughable finding. Thanks for checking it out!

About the chrome, hope you didn't pay too much for it? Don't mean to sound negative but if it's all like the clamp up front I wouldn't accept it from my chromer. The pitting is hardly cut and looks only barely polished - it's one thing if you accept the look, but still, if the pitting isn't taken out the chance is big that there's still rust inside and will appear eventually.
I'm a big fan of chrome undies (into lowriders), but chrome like this underneath a car isn't gonna hold up very long. Chroming itself doesn't need to be expensive, but the hours prepping are. Thats why I wouldn't accept bad prepped but still expensive chroming.

This was done as a favor, from a friend/business contact.

Completely get where you're coming from, the imperfections you are picking up on is on me. I told him not to worry about the bars looking show worthy. I requested a through blasting, cleaning, and dip as they are. He specializes in restoration and hod rods and I trust his work. I guess time will tell!

Ok, I can understand. Blasting isn't ideal before chroming concerning surface smoothness but it does take the rust out. Wouldn't worry too much about it then :)

I’ve been watching the 2 Pull and Save website’s inventory like a teenager’s first porno mag, for a later 240 with better spindles in preparation of my short coil over build. This ‘91 245 showed up about 2 days ago, I took the full strut/caliper/rotor assemblys and the rear bumper, which was in incredible condition, very excited about it! I’ll most likely run these with cut springs for the summer while I work on other things and still able to enjoy it for the summer.

Although today’s high was 36?, the sun was out and I’ve been wanting pressure wash the under carriage so I can start cleaning it all up. Pressure washed the trunk, bumpers, trim and seals while I was at it. The previous owner used some fiberglass and epoxy to buy some time with the rusty buttcheeks, this is only going to be driven in the summer so I just cut them out. I’ll weld some steel in soon enough.

The truck needed a deep scrub after this winter.

I have some rust free but cheeks already cut out of a parts car if you want them. PM me if interested.

I'm over west of Seattle, so not too far away.

Small victory. Flew down to Salem, OR for the holiday weekend and stopped by Rich’s Volvo Only yard in Portland. Lots of Volvo parts and a few older 240s, most of the older ones he won’t let go of but finally found a really nice set of chrome mirrors for $60.

I’ll get them cleaned up and install them this weekend when I get home along with my new steering wheel, the hub shows it’s been delivered!

Been rocking the elephant ears on my 242 for years now. Large enough for decent visibility and I much prefer the look over the standard plastic version. They be difficult to get in just the right spot, but a little bit of fiddling will achieve good results.

If you have multiple drivers that are quite a bit different heights, elephant ears are a problem as they can't be quickly adjusted.

Looking through your build for motivation next month. I was gonna mention some door rod reinforcing bars that a member was making a while back, and lo and behold, it was quillc!

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=329528

Right on, thanks for checking it out Justin. I'll have to look into quillc's reinforcing bars, thanks for the suggestion.

Brought some life back to the mirrors today. One of the screws that holds the mirror onto the arm was stripped and isn’t coming out so easily. Letting the threaded piece soak in PB blaster for the night, hoping it breaks free tomorrow...

Seconded. My set for the '83 need some love, I appreciate the info.

Right on. I’m following your 242 build too, lots of inspiration there!

I spent a few hours last night and today with an angle grinder and wire brush to knock down all the loose rust on the floor boards. Once I was satisfied, knowing it’s as good as it’s going to get for now, I scrubbed it everything with degreaser and a firm plastic brush on the end of my drill. Tonight I’ll be laying the first coat of chassis saver. The drivers side floor board will ultimately get cut out and replaced, but this will last me long enough to have some fun this summer!

First coat layed nicely, I’ll lay another one down this week. The metal that holds the clips for the rear bumper trim is in pretty rough shape too. Took it down and plan to coat it with this stuff as well, since it’s not viewable when the bumper trim is on, I’m not too worried about it for now...

Scored a new front half of black carpet from John (John242ti). Cleaned up nicely, still need to find the rear half and some black waffle mats.
