Hi fellow Turbobrickers!
As a long time reader on the Forums and the Facebookpage, i'd like to share my Volvo obsession with all of you. This thread will be about the '77 242 Turbo that me and my brother share and my Daily Driver 245 Turbo, which currently is out of his DD duty because i drive a VW Diesel at the moment.
First Volvo i ever owned was this hooptie, a 500,- car for a Rally through Europe:
I still think that mustache is the best addition i ever did to a 240.. So classy!
We installed some extra cargosprings on that thing and drove the wheel of it. Every time you'd take a right turn the thing would just bounce and skip across the road. Awesome car!
After that car, my DD Golf 4, wasn't any good anymore to me and i sold it to some guy in Poland.
After a lot of searching i found the perfect 245 Turbo. It looked sporty, had the Polaris rims on it(which i didn't care for at that moment) and had a Wilwood BBK in the front. Aswell as a B230FK swap (it's a original 2.1 Turbo, but one of the previous owners wanted more reliability), M46 + OD, 3" Ferrita, 15g Turbo, IPD Turbo Cam, Chipped LH2.4 and lowering springs.
So after 2 visits and a lowball offer on that car, i'd call myself the owner of a true Turbobrick.
This is how it looked when i bought it.
Loved it from the start! and my 240 addiction was born.
After 2 blown M46's, a bit of welding, new PU-Bushes all around, rebuilding the hydraulic steering rack, a few coats of paint and plastidip, rebuilding E-codes, custom skidplate, complete brake revision front and back, 2 failed MOT's, and 2 sets of tires. The 245 looks like this:
Yes, it's purple!
Haulin' junk:
Aside from Carbon mirrors that come in next week, no big changes done to it over the last 6 months.
But this thread says 242, so let me show that thing!
Bought it, 2,5 years ago together with my brother from the son of the First owner. The poor man died 5 years prior to our purchase and his son didn't know what to do with it and decided he wanted to sell it after 5 years. In the 5 years after the passing away of his father, he had the car serviced and MOT'ed every year, but failed to drive it anywhere.
The old 2.1 engine and carb where junk, but the car is in mint condition. So me and my brother decided to buy it and do a quick turboswap. ooh boy, where did we go wrong?!
after the acquisition of the 242, we bought a '95 940 Manual Turbo and started swapping out all the parts. After a month of building, the car was ready but wouldn't start.
the Fugly 940 with the worst paintjob ever:
bought a extra FK:
Stuffed a M46 in the 242 instead of the M90 that came with the 940.
Had still 3 laying around because of my 245 having the habit of eating them.
After 4 months of ****ing around getting that POS to start, we had enough of it and bought a Megasquirt kit.
It stood on this lift for over 4 months..
Wired in the Megasquirt:
Done:
new rims, Zender 15":
together with the sidepipe (no silencers)
took it to the dyno-dude for mapping, 3 days prior to a 5 day roadtrip to the UK and scotland:
And then, it ran for the first time. Sound was ****ing loud! Hear that gearbox squeel when we put it into gear.. 1 day before our roadtrip (with this car) to Scotland.

No testdrive, just go! and our roadtrip/rally to the UK started with with our first drive in the car which was a 800km trip to London. The gearbox squeeled every time we engaged a gear and after 3 days of torturing that poor old M46, we decided to give it a desperate needed oil-change. Instead of the recommended ATF that Volvo says we needed to run in this gearbox, we opted for a tradition gearbox oil and it never squeeled again! (until it blew up 1 year later)
Gearbox oil change! - one of the nicest chaps i've ever encountered in my life. Guy wasn't thrilled when we walked into his volvo shop because he was busy. Untill we mentioned we needed a gearoil change in our 242 Turbo and we just needed his pit to do it. We used his tools, his workshop and his gearoil and he wouldn't take a dime, so then we bought his whole crew a beer.. Awesome guy!
Then we found out our fueltank was leaking (i took the photo and 6hours later in the hotel i showed my brother the picture, we then noticed the liquid behind the rear wheel )
During this rally, the obvious became really clear. This thing corners like poo! The stock springs, the 160hp we had on tap and the 4.11 rear end weren't a good combination to throw around all the small and tight corners in Scotland. But still, had a blast!
here we encountered a 142 with FK Turbo which was much better suited for these roads (scrapin' his tailhook on every bump!)
Then the 142 broke down (weld on the Oil return from the turbo shat itself)
Then we became Facebook-famous:
After this adventure, we decided the car needed a bit of extra love and parts to make it more fun. build continues in the next post.
Next post i'll start with the build 2.0
