Duder's Beige Brick - ARUNDL - 1981 242 DL +B230FT

You dont need to run a 2.4 cluster. To much wiring. Just run a 86-88 lh 2.2 cruise control cluster

Please expound on this. Does the 2.2 cruise cluster use a mechanical speedometer? Does it output a vehicle speed signal that LH2.4 can use?

I was under the impression that the 2.4 cluster didn't require major surgery to install, but correct me if I'm wrong.

ou need to move some wire around and add some I believe, all you need to do with the lh 2.2 ic is run the wire for the impulse sender from the ecu to the spade connector on the back of the cluster near the speedometer. its a lot more simple in my opinion, then you don't have to worry about having a check engine light in the cluster as well :)

So the LH2.2 cruise speedo outputs a signal analogous to the tone-ring diff VSS signal that the LH2.4 ECU is looking for?

I do need to add a check engine light however; this car is going to be BAR-ref'd and smog legal after the swap.

Ok, I should clarify. It will be smog legal at first. Once the swap is certified I'm going to start taking liberties with it.

I feel your pain (Commie-fornia).

Progress is lookin good.
I'm ~a week ahead of ya. Just dumped my b230ft into my kjet 242...

I cant wait for the referee session.... /sarcasm.

We should remain in communication. Good to know there's someone local who is doing the same thing at the same time. I'll be very curious to hear how much (or little) scrutiny you get by the BAR ref. I've heard of them being extreme dicks about every little detail like accessories, radiatior, fuel tank, etc. But something tells me an old beige Volvo won't raise eyebrows quite like an LS-swapped FD RX7 does, for example.

Will do. I've heard either A) it's pretty simple, and they just make sure the emissions features are right, OR, B) you want to gouge your eyeballs out with their thoroughness.

Also depends on which BAR referee you go to.

Yep, actually already have a D24 still installed in a 245. I want this car to be legit though. There are a lot of things I can do with a B230FT that won't ever be noticed by a smog guy.

But I've heard that older diesel title swapped cars are subject to random testing. And I asked my AAA office if they do paperwork on diesel swaps and they said no. "Change of motive power" is what DMV calls it. Is your 244 a "diesel?"

Yesssss. Getting a highly modified car to fly under the radar in California seems like such a fun challenge.

I'll consider the diesel title a bit more before doing anything rash.

Below are some pics of my Recaro adapter brackets which attach my brown corduroy seats to stock 240 sliders. Today I finished welding the driver's side brackets and painted them. Started on the passenger side and got mostly done with one of them.

I had to cut windows in the sides for bolt access, and my cutoff wheel went outside the lines a bit in order to get deep enough. Welded the corners closed to remove stress risers.

My TIG skills are improving; the one I fully welded today looks far better than either of these.

Another seat bracket post. Super exciting.

Proof of better TIG welds on the 2nd set:

First set is now 100% done. Brown is the new beige.

Finally parked both 240s next to each other for a photo op. What a dashing duo.

Some updates of note.

I have the B230FT mostly stripped down to the long block now. Cleaning up components, starting with the intake manifold. Quaker formula solution in a heated high pressure parts washer works very nicely.

Went on a junkyard run and scored a Denso 100A alternator, G80 + aluminum cover, wasted spark coil pack from a Ford Escort, and some ignition modules to drive the thing.

The Bosch 100A alternator weighs 17 lb as shown, Denso 12 lb. I'm happy to save 5 lb ahead of the front axle wherever I can.

Also recently obtained various high impedance injectors, 3" AMM for LH2.4, and some DeCarbon front strut inserts for experimentation purposes.

Every little bit is progress, and I've been chipping away at it every day.
