The Beige Bounce Back - Vol242vo's 242

Well, I guess you still kinda have commandos... The 1986-93 bumpers are essentially plastic covered commando bumpers. Nothing skinny about them. Slightly narrower, but they still stick out almost as far as the commando bumpers do and use basically the same bumper shocks. So, you still have the same front and rear protection against low speed bumps that you did before.

Here's the progression of Volvo bumpers for the 100/200 series:

Skinny bumpers aka Skinnies (1967-72 140/164, 1967-73 in Europe, etc) - no shocks, bracket mounted to body:

Skinny commandos (1973 140/164 cars only in north america) - 5 mph crash protection in front, 2.5 mph rear:

Commandos (1974-82 100/200 series in the US, 1974-85 in Canada, 1974-80 everywhere else) - 5 mph crash protection, probably closer to 10 mph in reality:

Toy bumpers (aka Euro bumpers - used from 1983-85 on US model cars) - 2.5 mph crash protection front and rear:

Plastic Commandos (all north american 1986-on 240s) - 5 mph, probably closer to 10, albeit cover will likely get messed up, no corner protection:

Thanks for the clarification on the bumper differences John, helpful info!

LaSSiss, thanks for the compliment, I’m really enjoying your build thread.

Had some free time to lay some fiber glass over the holes that rusted through now that it had a layer of chassis saver. Pretty excited about finally getting to this stage, I’ll finally be in a place where I can start putting the carpet and interior back in! I still need a black rear carpet piece and to paint the head liner and redo the door and rear panels.

I’ll end up using some body filler on the other side of the passenger rear quarter, lucky, it’s the only other spot the had rusted through.

Volvo stew.

Soaked all the weather stripping and rubber seals to remove old dirt and moss build up. All interior pieces were scrubbed, this 242 is going to have that new car smell when I’m done.

Yes one of my tubs is pink, lol.

Debating whether to throw some paint on plastic or not. Also, anyone have good experience or recommendations on a good rubber conditioner? Hoping to bring some life back to the rear window pieces...

Just as I thought when I got this 242, it hasn’t seen much attention this summer. My daughter helped me cover the Volvo up now that it lost it’s place in the garage and the rain is coming. I’ll end up putting some time in soon with a pop up tent. Both front and rear windshield gaskets are beyond shot so I wanted to make sure there’s was zero chance of any water getting inside.

About to do the same with mine now that hurricane season will be winding down.

Hows the 242 going? I traded this to Chase (the guy you got it from) and regretted it almost instantly. Ended up getting another beige 242 but it isn't as sweet as yours

Right on, I?m enjoying it. I sold a super clean ?78 Beige 242 to Cameron that I instantly regretted which led me to keep my eyes out for another. I have some great plans for this one, just need better weather and house remodeling is taking priority at the moment. Do you have a project thread on yours?

No, not yet. I want to have some real progress to talk about before I start a thread.

Although I’ve sourced some exciting wheels and suspension parts...this is getting old. Need more garage/shop!

When do we get to see the wheels?? Finally all this snow BS is gone

Hey! Sorry I just saw this...wheels have been a little fiasco but we’re working through it. After I get them, I’m going to refinish them before I post something.

In transit:

I’ve been hoarding some fun parts, just waiting for less obligations and better weather. I did finally score a nice set of skinny/toy bumpers (‘83-‘85 US anyway). Both front bumpers, the top is an ‘86-‘93 bumper. Bottom is the skinny, noticeable difference. I’ll make them new again.
