Headed here next week for body work and paint: http://www.lostlegendsauto.com

^can I ask how much the blasting cost? I was quoted $2.5k just to have it the whole thing baking soda blasted. This is for the 66 1800S

I paid $1,100 for the blasting (glass bead) and another $200 for the zinc phosphate which is guaranteed to prevent flash rust for 90 days as long as it's kept inside. I was happy with the price and had a lot of confidence in them due to the other cars they've done.

Oh, forgot this one:

It's on the top of the driver's side fender and is a true testament to the mad skills of the body shop that worked on this in the late 70s or early 80s. They just slopped bondo into the hole and painted over it. Real pro work.

Congradulations to get to this stage of the project!!

This is the same or a replica of the Holman & Moody car pictured a few years back w/magnesium Minilites.

Thanks very much vintagewrench!

Now I need to spend a lot of time thinking about budgets and the proper order of doing all the things that need doing before I'll be able to start reassembly. Stressing a bit.

Car is back from the body shop and in black primer. It's going to sit in my barn until they're ready to begin work on it (probably Jan/Feb). I'm surprised at what a huge difference it makes to see it in one color, even with the dents. Tempted to just clear coat it, paint the Jolly Roger on the roof and race it. Not really....

Very cool! Great to see more progress on this thing. What you paid for media blasting is what a local company charges in Tucson.

What are you doing for the interior ? Original upholstery ?

I plan to do this as close to a correct restoration as possible...in the traditional TB fashion

So for upholstery will be OEM/repro eventually, on a schedule driven by funds and spousal tolerance for such foolishness. I may reuse a lot of the interior trim panels to begin with and then replace them over time. Definitely will need to redo the seat webbing, foam and upholstery before I put it on the road though.

Will probably take the same approach on the chrome trim; re-use the stuff that can be easily swapped out for re-chroming or replacement later and only deal with stuff like the door handles now.

As soon as I get a mini project out of the garage bay (trying to deal with some minor rust on my 88 744T so I can daily it) I'll be starting on the engine build. In the meantime I'm reading (and re-reading, and re-reading) Phil S's posts on that subject: (http://www.vclassics.com/archive/engine1.htm

It's in the body shop for finish work and paint. Should be back in my garage in Oct/Nov.

Sourced a correct M410 in May and in process of getting it shipped to High Performance for a rebuild.

Engine still in parts and I haven't even started to think about dealing with it. :(

In short, project has thankfully not died but major life events have put it into suspended animation until the body gets back to me. Hoping that will provide fresh motivation too.

Woohoo! I have an M41 that came back from Hi-Performance Auto, it's smooooooth. Glad to see progress on this car.

Would it make sense for you to source a B20 and just use that instead of slugging through an engine rebuild ?

Project looks awesome! I'm having to do similar body repair to you for both rust and crash damage. Sadly I think a lot of the body work done in the 80s was horrible.

Mind if I ask how much they charge for the steering box rebuild? I've got 3 here and they're all terrible.

It would probably make more sense to find a decent B20E but I'll still probably go the route of having the original one rebuilt. Thinking that it might make a trip out to Torrance CA early next year just like the tranny.....

Come over to our shop too and have a beer if you're in the area!
