240 Pilot Bearing nightmare

My method: home made slide hammer.

Find a bolt with a hex head just small enough to fit inside. Put two nuts on it with washers in between.

Take a section of coat hanger wire, double it up, and smash it securely between the washers and tighten it down.

Take something heavy with a hole in it, like a diving weight or even a bench vice. The heavier the better.

Twist some washers on the other end of the coat hanger wires so the heavy object can't slide off.

Hammer against the washers with the hex head bolt pulling out on the bearing. Work your way around the perimeter.

Also, PB blaster.
 
I wonder if the retaining clip being left off, let the bearing spin, galling it in there?? Sounds weird, but gotta be a reason for it.
