My 242, Now What Do I Do?

Traded the 745 for this 85 b230f with m46 and a set of hydras/tires.

Cleaned up the engine/tranny

And gave it a compression test

Bad news was cyl 1 had 70 psi, the rest had 130-140. Oh well, the tranny is a beauty, gears and bearings look good. Came with the front driveshaft too. The hydras are straight with good rubber. I'll run those as I figure out my final rims.
Been so busy I've had no time to do much paint work. Oh well, garage time is precious!

Now I have a question, what engine should I drop in this beast?

B230f 1995 180k
B21ft 1983 rebuilt, zero miles
B21ft original, 150k
B230f 1985 190k needs rebuilt

Should I do the lh2.4 as I've been planning or should I keep the original kjet? I've been told it would hurt the value of the car if I veer away from stock original.

Thoughts??

Never consider re-sale value..Not in old cars, not in houses, clothes , wives.
Think only of use-value: how many laughs and aaaaahhhhh moments you get for how much money spent..

i say cage it, get some suspension from North America's leading Volvo suspension specialist, and get out in the woods and do this:

You won't be worrying about value of the car because of the overwhelming value of the experience..
Its just a car..

Beat it hard--but maintain it..
B21 with later electronic injection..

The only way the car is worth any more then any other 242 is if it was restored to stock.
I don't know that it could be done for what the car is (could be) worth.
A resto mod would probably be just as good an investment and more fun.
Kjet leaves a lot on the table and is hard to get right.
For more power/less aggravation EFI.

What's wrong with the engine you cleaned up?
Where is the compression going?
Could be as simple as a bad valve seat or blown head gasket :e-shrug:

I like the B21ft. It takes a beating and goes fast with big cam, bewst and EFI.

Lh 2.4, rebuilt b21ft, 16t, 3"dp, Shane's chips, v70r greens it is! Thanks for your help! Any good links to stitching the Unibody? I've got some decent experience and a mig; just need to know what seams to work on. Thanks!

Got a parts car! A 90 745turbo stick; blown engine but all there, m46 gutted dash, body is rough rolling on steelies with decent snows. I know people don't like parts cars, but this one was already dead when I got it.

Are there any good engine builds you can refer me to using the lh2.4, intake/injectors/rail/Maf and exhaust manifold? At this time I want to have a mild build, say 220whp.

That grill up for sale?

As it has the SO tag, I would simply restore it to stock.

Lots of other NA 242s out there to molest.

Hmmm. Molest is such a bad word; restore to stock plus with more modern Volvo parts is what I'm going to do. Here in MI I've seen five 242's in the past two years and four were rusted with ratty interiors. They aren't as prevalent here as where you're from. I like this one, I am restoring this one and I'll make it my own as I have a dozen other rides. Those who are purists will scoff at even mild mods but that's ok! A well done resto mod will garner plenty of admiration (as well as those who disagree).

On another note I see you have a 69 firebird in you fleet; so do I! Pontiacs and Volvos seem to fit; at least how I see things, lol!

Picked up a 95 944 today. Car was wrecked lower front, has 170k on the clock but the squirter block runs really well! Has a locker rear axle too; I'm using this as my 242 power plant!

Pulled the rack and cleaned it up; pulled the interior and extracted (cleaned) all the seats, mats and carpet. Found the sound deadener foam was wet on both sides of the tunnel under the dash. Pulled out all the non-stock wiring. Vacuumed everything. The musty smell is gone!

The two wire bundles that exit out of the firewall next to the brake booster; how do they come out?

Interior is awesome!

Removed excess wire

Getting there; engine bay is ready for primer. Brake booster/master/lines detailed.
Interior was extracted, vacuumed sprayed and wiped down and set in the sun the dry. They're ready for re-insertion!!

My good friend Robert Spinner came by on his way East.

He helped me out by bringing the louvers I got from Steve (stove)! Oh yeah!

Worked on the intake and exhaust/turbo

Start exhaust w 90+ manifold

Add in angle flange hot side from an 01 s60

Add in the rest of the 16T

Getting there! No comments?!
