Is the Rallye Gauge water temp sensor specific - B20F?

Hello,

I have the Rallye Gauge cluster in my 1971 142E and as I just replaced the engine with a rebuilt B20F do I need to swap temp sensors for my gauge to work properly? I installed the engine with a standard temp sensor on the FI head but still have the old sensor that worked great.

clean the hex really good and look on the flats of the sender...Stamped in might be something like 0-150..
Look at gauge..is it the same range?

0-120 if memory serves.

My old sensor that worked reads 120 MAX so I'll stick with that. Thanks!

Well the big thing is does the marks on the sender match --0-120 or 0-150, whadd EVAR.

Good. that's why we should stick with VDO or Moto-meter..they mark their senders on the flat of the hex...even stock idiot light for oil pressure senders ---in metric so 0,4-0,6 bar

The temp sensor, oil pressure sender and fuel sender are specific to the Rallye cluster. Only the oil pressure sender is readily available.

Aside from the lack of a little tiny Saab logo, those look identical to the same things in a Saab "De Lux" instrument cluster of the same generation....All of them..

And a sender is a sender...

Considering the 4 gauge GT cluster works with all the stock senders, I'd say a sender is not a sender. The fuel gauge will work backwards on a Rallye cluster with stock sender and I doubt Volvo would have sold a special temp sender if the stock one worked.

Sensor values for R-Soprt, Rallye and VDO gauges

I made measurements with 12,5 V for Rallye and VDO Series 1 water temp gauges. For R-Sport I bypassed that voltage regulator and after couple tests 7,5 V supply voltage was found to be ok.

Potentiometer simulated the sensor

So use standard VDO sensor with 120C stamping on hex, or sensor from 73-> 140, with ->72 sensor reagings on the gauge will be lower.
