In 2009, I bought my first car.

In 2012, I briefly had a second car, which unfortunately I had to sell.

In 2013, a very good buddy of mine sold his 1982 242 GLT to me.

As modded as it ever was

As a Canadian model car, it has the B23E engine and a K cam. The car has an M46 with working overdrive, is lightly modded but is suffering from some rust in the buttcheeks. The clock read 345,215kms (214,507mi) on it when I bought it, but mechanically it was fairly good. That said, it was showing signs that it needed a new head gasket.

Did I mention that it has an M46? I need to mention that I've never driven manual before. If I taught myself guitar, I can teach myself how to drive manual, right? What could possibly go wrong?

The answer is, not much, actually.

Drove the car every day for the first two weeks that I had it and it has really, really grown on me. "We'll see what ends up happening to the car, but for now, a proper restoration is needed first," I thought.

Yeah, right.

Less than a month since I got the car, I've been on Turbobricks snagging stuff for this car already...

EDIT (APR/2019):
However, as with many projects, life takes priority. I ended up not being able to work on the car nor drive it for the better part of 3 years, and eventually it got sold...and a lot of its goodies ended up in another 240 I ended up with.

Adjustable cam gear...on a B23E? Or is it an 'mercun GLT with a B21FT?

The B23E is great, mine had over 400,000km when we retired it, still running strong, even though half it's life was on 87 octane pinging all day every day.

damn.... I know everyone loves rounds or quad rounds but FFS keep the quad squares.... that just looks mean and sexy at the same time. Every time I see a volvo with rounds or quad rounds I always think to myself "Gee that looks nice...but not mean and awesome....just nice, kinda like 40's swell looking things"

B23E. It's strong alright!

You can have the quad squares. Single rounds are so rare here, and I love that even-older-school look.

Sell/store the adjustable cam gear- not sure you'd get much benefit changing cam timing. It already needs premium and has aggressive spark timing at low rpm to improve the bottom end. Advancing it will shift the torque curve down a bit, but may be detrimental if you increase potential for pinging.

I never found the low end lacking anyway. I DID find I lost about 20hp and 20% fuel economy (not exaggerating) by not using high enough octane though.

Your advice shall be heeded, wise one.

  1. New headgasket
  2. AirCare/insure
  3. ???
  4. Profit

Oh yeah, what are the head gasket signs?

I ran that 400k engine AIR COOLED (at 100kph, on the 401, for several kms) on more than one occasion and the head gasket never had a problem.

Very similar to the car I just bought, 1981 242 GLT silver... haha Want to send me a flathood setup?
