Electric fan conversion to 760 Turbo

I finally got started on my e-fan conversion or at least the start of it. Parts I got or will be using

- OEM E-fan from a Volvo 940 with the plastic holders
- Saab temperature sensor
- OEM E-fan Relay

I read allot about this but was never sure what to do with it. The article on the main page describes another conversion than I am doing now. I used the plastic from the 940 and cut it dremeled it down to the size of the 740 radiator (I got a all steel radiator upgrade too!)

Offtopic What models came with the all steel radiator? I got it from a guy that breaks volvo’s but never saw the small size radiator in all steel, only the ones with the sides from plastic like i got in the 760 and had in my other 740/Offtopic

Very happy with the result all the parts seem to bold on pretty neat I think it will work great for the flow of the cooling. Now all I’m missing is the relay that I might just borrow from the 960 parts car to see if it works tomorrow..

dammit the saab sender i bought does not work pfft have to find a new one :grrr:

There is a Volvo temperature sensor which pops right into the radiator, useful if you want to keep SAAB out of the equation. (We all do, don't we?)

Buy the sensor at Volvo to make sure you get the rubber gasket as well. Drill a 22mm hole in radiator, insert, secure with zip-tie, DONE!

I have that sensor in the radior , the one that turns on the fan on the front right, i was told that it doesnt work with what i got

pops in the whole seen in the last pic

wait wait wait ... is it that easy? :grrr:

i do recall that sender from volvo is around 50 euro's here.. then again parts are here the most expensive it seems

Worked fine for me with a S60 fan and generic 40A relay. I installed it in the hole halfway up/down the radiator.

Yup.

the Volvo temp switch's number is 1276229-0
are you sure it's 50 euros? i'm gonna need it soon, too ;)

i told ya so :-P

What do you want to do with the temp switch thats in the radiator? Im not sure what temp it switches at, probably higher than the new temp switch you have to get for the Efan conversion. You can ditch the small efan thats mounted in front of the radiator when the new Efan is in place anyway. Especially since you don't have a working A/C anymore.

the copper radiator is pretty common on older 200/700 series. our 760's have them and ruben's 242 too. The nice thing about them is that they don't have breaking end-tanks like the newer ones that have plastic end-tanks. Not that i had issues with them breaking yet though.

Eh? you told me to get the saab sender in the first place? :wtf:

ah okay yeah i do recall that.. i got the sender from ruben tough with a volvo hose to it so i kinda thought it would be the correct one.. got partnr on the volvo sender?

there is no direct volvo sensor for this application, at least not that i am aware of. Remove the old sensor from the T-piece, go to auto parts place and ask for a sensor of the same size but of a different temperature. From the top of my head: 87/92C (its a dual sensor).

edit: i dont remember the temp of the sensor that was included, indeed strange that it isnt the right one actually, maybe it was never installed. whats the temp of the sensor?

i'm not able to find it on the sensor right now it would need a good clean first and i;m wearing not the propper clothing to do that right now :-P

Oh btw i got the temp set for next to nothing from ruben so even with the sensor being wrong or broken that is totally cool

All Metal radiator

Ruben's 242 has the 3 core metal one because I bought it from IPD to replace the original nasty well used one...

Chad :-P

This is the temperature the Volvo switch operates at, IIRC. On at 92, off at 87'C. You find them in late 940s with AC, among others.

The SAAB switch is only loved because you get the T-piece for the rad hose with it.

hey thats good info about the sensor, i recently pulled a brand new radiator from a scrapped 940 which has the sensor too. LH is a bit lazy with turning on the Efan in my 240 so this sensor will be connected too. nice.
