Probably time to start documenting this.

In our last episode, I stripped my 1990 245 of the fun parts, and sent it to the crusher:

Fast forward a few years, lots of life changes, including a move to a new house in a new state. A new house, with a two car garage.

A running, driving, 1992 245 M47 with terminal rot was for sale up the road from my house for TB money.

And I found a 1993 245 that wasn't totally roached.

It was a pretty good deal by east coast standards. Pretty much stock, adult owned, and spent over half its life in Alabama according to the CarFax.

However, the dash was out because the PO tried to undertake a blower motor / heater core replacement, but lost his motivation halfway through. So, I'll need to sort that out. Annoying, but I did it on my 1990.

I have all of the parts shown in the first picture, plus (almost?) a complete +T setup. Need to itemize that at some point.

Biggest problem right now is an uninsulated garage in Vermont winter. Insulation, drywall, lights, and a garage heater are in the plans, but I'm not sure how much will happen in the next 2 - 3 months.

Either way, I'm happy to have a project again. This car is not my daily, and will likely just be a fun weekend / nice weather car. Current plans are the JVAB coilovers, 13c/90+ +t, m47.

Congrats on the move and house. Now you know what you'll be doing for the next FEW YEARS. You'll find there aren't enough weekends in the month.:)

Thanks! Yeah, projects are never over until you get rid of the car, right? I'd at least like to get the car on the road and have the parts car stripped and gone by this summer. We'll see what happens.

To quote Shelley, "look upon the works of the previous owner and despair!"

Trying to decide what engine I'm going to use, between this and the 1992 parts car. This one has a chance of having the squirters installed, so as long as it looks healthy...

Compression test results.

Now, I can plan on pulling both engines and trans, swapping the M47 to this motor and doing the +T work while on the stand. The 1992 B230F will stick around in case I want to do a real performance build.

So, instead of the 13C I already had, I jumped at a good deal on a 15G in great shape. It has the conical flange which will match up to the downpipe I have.

I also picked up a B cam which will be an improvement over the M cam currently in the car

A few weekends back, I pulled the engine, trans, shifter, pedal box, driveshaft, and assorted other parts from the blue '92. I'm lucky to live near a few neighbors that love nothing more than pulling engines on a beautiful fall Sunday

I bet your garage is getting smaller.:) That pic with guys and the engine, funny. You'd think you just pulled a marlin out of the ocean.

 Between car parts and kids toys....

And yes, we were going for either trophy marlin or twelve point buck. Glad the overall vibe came through. :-D

Bought a sight unseen '84 F-Body T5. Confirmed that it is the 2.95 first. Otherwise, I'll have to see what shape it's in. I'm building the list of other needed parts for the swap. Probably need to call John V to talk modified bell housing, clutch, and pressure plate at some point.

I'll be documenting it here, as well as a thread on openinverter.org.

Still in the early stages, gathering the four major components:

1. Monsieur Poulrais is helping me get the Toyota L110 motor (GS450H transmission and motor in one) from a yard north of the border.
2. I've placed an order for the control board from Damien Maguire (evbmw.com) in Ireland.
3. I'm keeping my eyes out for a deal on an inverter, either a GS450H or a 07-11 Camry Hybrid (I think). They can vary wildly in price, from $150 - $650, between ebay and car-part.com listings.
4. Batteries, which will be the most expensive part of the project. I'll likely find just a few kWh's at first, just to make sure everything works, and keep an eye out for more storage as I find good deals. Salvaged BMWs, Leafs, Volts, etc. for donors. Anything Tesla typically commands a serious premium.

A bit of fab work for the install. Mounts for the L110 and inverter. Need to get the driveshaft shortened once the L110 is in place. Pull all of the fuel related components.

After all of that, the ancillary bits. Likely a Prius EPAS setup, a high voltage brake booster, maybe a Kia / Hyundai high voltage heat pump. Basically, any of the functionality that would have come from the ICE.

Cool project! I'm excited to see how this turns out, especially with the GS450H drivetrain and one of Damien's controllers.

If you haven't seen it (how could you miss it?), last year's flame fest thread on tbricks was: EV turbobrick - the turbobrick way?
Buried in all the smack is some good info. The most promising turbobrick path from the discussions is close to what you're doing: https://forums.turbobricks.com/showpost.php?p=6192881&postcount=121

This ozvolvo link is good too: Greg & Wayne's 1993 240 Electric - the eVolvo

Thanks for the openinverter build link, I'll be watching. :)

Thanks, I've been sitting on the idea for a year or two at least. I've been lurking the openinverter community for a couple of years now, and I've finally seen enough progress that I was ready to get started on my own project.

I have to admit, I haven't been around TB much in the past year or two, while I sorted out what I wanted to do with the car. I did see that thread at some point, but I was put off by all of the bickering and trolling in it. Even the diyelectriccar forum can be a bit rough at times. The openinverter community doesn't have the same vibe to it. Feels a lot more like the open source software communities I've been a part of.

Yes, that post generally sums up the simplest way to get a 240 converted. One major difference, I found the GS450H trans for under $300 USD total at a yard in Canada. Poulrais was looking for an m47 swap kit and I had most of what he needs taking up space in my garage. We worked out a deal where he picks up the trans (done at this point), brings it down here (happening in the near future hopefully), and will take back the m47 and all related parts I have plus a little cash to cover the fees at the border. So, the second biggest expense (next to the batteries), will be little to no cash out of my pocket.

The problem with looking at EV conversions from the outside, is that going through one of the commercial conversion specialists will cost you five figures easy. And while Damien and the openinverter community do not live by the standard of 17? / hr, there is a strong culture of "you can do this, in your garage at home."

Hey! Glad I could help you for your build! My son is pretty happy to finally be able to do the manual swap in his 240!

Looking forward to see this build move ahead! :)
