79 242gt

I haven't posted much on here, but here's my 79 242GT VIN: VC24245M1153431. The car has 80K on it and was pretty much perfect/completely rust free when I got it.... It needed paint so I went a little over board by stripping it and having it media blasted. Unbelievably it had no body work under the paint!! Now its in the works for paint in the spring, an LS w/T56 and will have a completely new interior when its done. I've considered keeping it a GT look with the silver and stripes, but I absolutely hate the silver and the stripes... So...

Stripped. widened the tail lamp cut outs for newer style rear lights

Off to media blast

After Media blast

Primed panels

nice work. Are those mini lites?, 1980?...added
15 x 7 Can-am race rims, were the old performance moulds, but they were redone with modified inner lips so I can bounce off the kerbs on the track ( not bloody likely)
The offset is 12+ so rims sit in the same spot as std wheels so no rubbing etc.

Roll the fender well lips before you paint.

Shame about the taillights, the 5 panels are much more reliable.

What body colors do you like if not silver?

I'm absolutely rolling the rear fenders, I want to run some fairly wide tires and wheels since shes getting some real power.... I like the look of the 6 panel lights better.. I'm thinking of some sort of old Volvo green, can't decide....

Out of approx 22,000 242s, how many were GTs?

Numbers by country would be cool...

Canada: TB count - 5 (estimated 200 in black)
US: TB count - 16
UK: none
Sweden:?
Norway:?
Germany:?
Netherlands:?
Australia: TB count - 6 (338 registered in Aus - according to Volvo club of Victoria)
NZ: TB count - 4 (8 in total)

Who cares? Well they are climbing in value over here, especially coz we got B23 with H cam and there are'nt many left. No other 242s ever made it here.

Anyway, thought this may be of interest to others with a GT. Post your chassis number, country and pics here and I will update the list.

I have a nice rust free 1978 242GT from California. I had it shipped up last year and I finally got it running today :-). It needs some TLC, but the body is solid. The VIN number is 133728.

Thanks for creating this registry. Sad to see how many have been crushed...

Scrapped, don't know if anyone wanted to know for the total count of if someone was looking for that chassis code.

My uncle has a '79 or '80 GT shell out behind his house. I'll try and get better pictures next time I'm in Tennessee, but I sold the grille to Redwood Chair about five years ago. Was a 60k mile car when it was rolled, and he got it to use as a parts car.
