Default Rmstephenson's '87 245

Starting a thread to document my work on my new to me '87 245. Bought it from a small dealer in DC that buys cars at auction. Surprisingly it was a Carmax trade in. The car wasn't quite as clean as advertised, but it has working A/C, vinyl seats, manual windows, and most importantly a 5 speed! Made it back from DC to Atlanta with no real incidents, but did find a pool of water in the passenger foot well after driving through heavy rain. Also, cruise control is there but does not work.

I would love alloy wheels and new shocks/springs, but this is where I am thinking of starting.

Maintenance (Already ordered IPD tune up kit):
  • Air Filter
  • Fuel Filter
  • Oil Change
  • Cap and rotor
  • Spark plug wires
  • Spark plugs
  • Transmission fluid
  • Diff fluid
  • Timing belt and water pump

Rust:
  • Passenger floor about the size of a shoe box has bubbled from underneath - POR 15?
  • Roof rack, there is a small rust bubble about the size of a quarter by one of the mounts. Planning to pull the stock rack and plug the holes. Strip and paint that small spot.
  • Rear bumper, one of the seam welds down in the structure behind the rear bumper is rusting internally. I am thinking I can brush it all off, rust eater, and seal.
  • Small bubble center bottom of windshield. I am wondering if this is the source of the leak. If so I will need to pull the wind shield and do a similar repair to that of the roof rack.

What next after that? Suspension bushings I am thinking. Then replace things as time/budget allow. I'd like to find the source of the clunking and fix it.

Updates to follow on fixes to these issues and general updates to the car. Hoping to document my work with heavy pictures and how to for others to follow.

You should probably ask a mod to move this to showroom or projects & restorations. Maintenance is mostly just for questions and answers, not long-term threads.

I watched a number of those auctions earlier this year and even bid on a couple.

Check clutch cable/pedal adjustment, make sure it depresses the CC switch for the clutch pedal, but not tottaly, and same for the brake pedal & switch for CC

Make sure the vaccuum hoses ar on & not leaking there too. I find these are usual causes for non working CC. Easy to remedy too

OP your puddle in the car will likely be a leaky windshield. Just have it replaced. You will like it.

Enjoy your project.

^What he said. And clunks could be a variety of things, but if the struts & mounts haven't been done recently, I'd start there. Look for cracking on those black mount bushings. It's hard to find ones that last very long, so they're a common culprit.

Yep, flew up to DC and drove it home. Good lesson in sight unseen car buying. Ask more questions and get more pictures.

Also, hate to be a total noob, but can we move this again to projects/restorations?

Probably will be once project-grade work is under way.

Just start a thread there before this one gets too far down the road.

That's a common issue with the windshield. After you yank it out, replace with the flush-mount rubber and it should not hold water anymore. I NEED to do all 4 of mine...., but motor mounts and flame traps are front burner ATM...

sounds like you're off to a good start already,

Good luck with that 245,

Chris
