Default PuppyTune

Puppytune:

Is a Linux OS packaged by me for use as a tuner for our laptops to Megasquirt.

Puppy tune is a Derivative of Lucid Puppy 5.2.5 http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux...-Lucid-528.htm

alexandrion took it a step further and made Reborn Puppy v0.44 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67244

Puppy tune is a modified and packaged version of Reborn Puppy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Release Notes:
Current build:
Puppytune v0.52

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12968946/pup...tune_v0.52.iso

Release Notes:
previous build
Puppytune v0.30

Removed dictd_clinet (Online Dictionary)
Replaced Java 7u5 with 7u4 due to an issue with chrome

Added a batt % bar to the Conky menu on the desktop

Fixed puppytune sub-menu going away issue...... I think. Wrote a puplet for it just in case it winks out on you. This still happens gerr.
The next build I'm doing from scratch to fix this issue.

Previous Build
Puppytune v0.23
June 15th 2012

[*]Java 7[*]Tunerstudio 2.03[*]MegaLogViewer MS Version 3.05[*]x11vnc 0.9.13 (Remote Desktop) Compiled by me for this OS. Allows you to set output screen dimensions. It looks as it would if your phone was really the monitor.[*]Custom: RC.xml Menu.xml conkyrc This gives you the menus and shortcuts to all the tuning stuff[*]Automotive calc added to the menu[*] Volvo wallpaper modded version of turbobricks member Freq. http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=180967

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing Puppytune:

1) KNOW YOUR MONITOR SPECS. what screen resolution will you be using.

2) If you will be installing this on a thumb drive, Flash drive, SD card reader, Or ever some PC's boot off a sd card reader. You will need a copy of UNetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

3) If you will be booting the install off a CD rom then you will have to burn it as a image. Its a ISO. Don't just copy it to a cd as a file!

4) Download Puppytune http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12968946/pup...tune_v0.52.iso

5) Read up on how you install puppy linux http://puppylinux.org/main/How%20NOT...ll%20Puppy.htm

6) When it first boots Tunerstudio will load and then the first start window. Fill it in and then Start (windows key on the keyboard) + X will bring up the shutdown menu. Select restart. You will now be given the option to make a SAVE file. DO it or you loose all your settings and tunes etc. I use ext3 and 32mb file size. The smaller the SAVE the faster the boot.

7) From here on out right click brings up the big menu and all the short cuts you need are listed on the bottom right. Even more can be found by holding down the Start key (windows ICON button on the keyboard)

Installing ISO to flash, thumb drive, SD card etc.

Installing Puppytune with a flash drive

Installing Puppytune for CD boot or Hard disk install #1

Installing Puppytune for CD boot or Hard disk install #2

Backing up your Tunerstudio files

Setting up Internet / remote desktop

Use of apps / Tools

Video Drivers / Expanding pup save file

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a OS in progress so I want to hear suggestions if you have any. Remember this is Linux so there are no drivers for you to install ; its part of the package. All 3 different USB to Serial cables Ive plugged in worked, no disk needed.

Hmm, wonder if this would be something that could be adapted to an Android device?

So I spent all week making an install ISO for puppytune. Had a time of it getting Java happy on install.

Minimum system Requirements will be 128mb of ram with a OK video card 16megs onbord. or 256mb of ram with 8megs onbord.

Waiting on flash reader so I can send a copy of it to my laptop that has a CD drive. I need that for the original package.

I'm still working on it for ya all.

Release notes: Its final build is taking place now I will upload it sometime early Friday.

For those of you that use Shebang, Python, C, UNIX will have fun with this.

For those of you not tech savvy I've kept you in mind. It will install like any normal OS. I plan on writing a little how to for install and setting up your network. Its all done VIA GUI(graphical user interface)

It will boot directly into Tunner Studio

In the background it will Boot the x11vnc server http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/ <--- This is so you can remotely connect to your android or Iphone as seen in my video.

MegaLogViewer is installed as well and can be opened from an ICON on the desktop

A simple calculator, simple word processor, chrome web browser

AND a saved page of all the automotive calculating what you would need. http://www.bgsoflex.com/auto.html

Also now that I have the package synced to my current tuning laptop as I keep my laptop up to date I can make updated ISO's for every one else.

Lastly I will keep my eye on this thread as users suggest packages that they want or need I can develop this too.

Well X fingers now that the Checksum shows a valid copy.

Yes! Great idea. 1/2 the reason I bought a replacement netbook was for in-car use, but puppy on a garage sale find would be nicer as a leave-in-car solution. Super-quick booting with puppy...maybe use SDHC?

Having trouble getting software to find my USB-serial cable via COM port (man, I wish someone would just make a real usb device to read OBD1/2 ports...maybe make a LH/EZK interface plug?)

well thanks to every one who has given it a go.

2 small issues have been brought up by others.

No java support in Chrome
Tested true. I just fix the issue with a symbolic link will be issuing a patch soon. Its EZ ya jsut download a file I give you and put it on a flash drive and run it.
Also coming out with Puppytune v0.30 soon with the fix on the ISO
Puppy tune v0.30
Same look setup and feel.
Change all packages to a modular format so upgrades will be EZ and not require a new flash. This has been a bit of work and still allot more to get ready for the release. The benefit of this is that you will not have to download a new ISO for upgrades! So if java version changes or tunerstudio version changes, It can be patched to the new version without a new install.

Puppy tune menu item disappears after a hard shutdown or forced crash.
Cause of the issue is that the backup file I put on the distro is missing the menu. So when you crash it checks checks your current desktop to the backup file and then uses it. Why well because there is no record of the change to the menu system when i built the ISO.

I'm working on a patch to fix this. As you can still use every thing via shortcut its not a big problem but it will get taken care of in the next few days.

Lastly many people (4 lol) have asked me to make a version with megatunix http://megatunix.com/ insted of tunerstudio. If and when I get 10 people that want it ill start work on Puppytunix. Ive started some work on it. Its in version v0.001 atm. Until I hit about v0.20 I will not be supporting it. So if your a brave Linux soul don't ask for a copy ATM.

OK so to stop the current question, "is my searial to usb supported?" and "how do i install my drivers"

Linux has a Kernel. Puppytune is built on kernel 2.6.33.2 basically this is your driver(s) for all your hardware. Its not like windows where you go installing drivers later.

So I dug around and got the list for supported USB to serial.
OMG there are 5,439 supported USB to serial entries in the kernel
I made a txt file if you want to see if yours is supported. Also remember that this is for the chip in the USB to serial cable NOT just brand type on the box when you buy it. SO allot more than 5,439 cables are supported. The list is for vender ID of the USB.

The list https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12968946/linux/USB_Serial.txt

This sounds like an awesome package, cant wait to find some time to install it and play with it.

This is making an intergrated computer in my 242 for digital gauges a very attractive option.

An additional peice of software in the package for playing music and videos would be good.

I will post up my fave 2 programs for that. I'm trying to keep the package small. The programs will be simple to install. you put them in a DIR and then go to the add menu and then they run till you delete them. Its EZ to add SFS and pup files to your current OS.

Puppytune V0.30 coming Friday

Release notes:

Removed dictd_clinet (Online Dictionary)

Added a batt % bar to the Conky menu on the desktop

Fixed puppytune sub-menu going away issue...... I think. Wrote a puplet for it just in case it winks out on you.

Scripted all install files so upgrading is EZ. For every one running v0.23 will be able to upgrade except for java. Users of v0.30 and up will be able to upgrade from here on out with my posted upgrade file with out issue unlike the java for v0.23 users.

been busy on the next relese. Still a month out. It will come in 3 flavors next time.

1) Basic ISO install. Just like it is now no frills 250meg

2) Some extra stuff, Music player (all know formats), Video Player, 312meg

3) Full meal deal, All the above and a voice reconishion setup like androids so you can say music, or tunner studi and move around that way. This is going to take a good 6 months to sort so flavor 3 is on supper back list. estimating a 800meg install.

How did it go with the bluetooth ?

Talk about non-demanding system. 100MB ram with tunerstudio open (running in virtualbox)
